  • In this study, in regard to fiber reinforced mortar mixing steel fiber and 4types of organic fiber, impact test was carried out. Because to predict fracture reduction performance with flexural, tensile strength when types of fiber were different as impact reduction performance of concrete is closely related with toughness such as flexural strength, tensile strength and fracture energy etc. As a result, enhancement of toughness by fiber reinforcement controls the spall of rear. On the other hand in case of steel fiber relatively turned up high toughness in appropriate load compared with organic fiber but in same mixing rate, impact reduction performance by projectile showed low performance due to few number of an individual of mixing.

  • We combined Field-Activated Combustion Synthesis(FACS) with mechanical pressure to produce dense WC-20 vol.%Co composite in one step. The hardness, the fracture toughness and the relative density of the dense WC-20 vol.%Co were investigated. Under the application of 60 MPa pressure and 3000A current on the reactants, the relative density of WC-20 vol.%Co composite was 99.4%. The fracture toughness and hardness were $9.4 MPa.m^{1/2}$ and $1672kg\textrm{mm}^2$ respectively. The fracture toughness and hardness of WC-20 vol.%Co composite produced by FAPACS were lower than that of nanostructured composite, but similar to commercial ones. Therefore we concluded that the FAPACS method which can produce WC-20 vol.%Co within several minutes in one step is superior to conventional ones.

  • Fracture toughness({TEX}$J_{IC}${/TEX}) on 304 austenitic stainless steel weldments artificially degraded for long period under SCC environments were evaluated to investigate its reliability and environmental characteristics. Electro-chemical polarization tests were previously carried out to evaluate corrosion susceptiblility of weldment, and stress corrosion cracking was tested under various conditions of 3.5wt.% NaCl solution, the temperature of $25^{\circ}$C and $95^{\circ}$C, and oxygen concentration during 3000hours. From the results obtained, it was found that 304 stainless steel weldment was so susceptible under high temperature and high oxygen concentration of 3.5wt.% NaCl solution, and fracture toughness({TEX}$J_{IC}${/TEX}) was also considerably reduced by material degradation.

  • This paper presents thermal aging effect on fracture toughness properties of GTAW (gas tungsten arc welding) and SMAW (shielded metal arc welding) of 316L stainless steels, and investigates the applicability of the existing three thermal aging models for CASS (cast stainless steels). Thermal aging was carried out at 350 ℃ for up to 15,000h and at 400 ℃ up to 8,000h. After aging, tensile and fracture toughness tests using 0.5T C(T) specimens were carried out at room temperature and at 288 ℃. Comparing with the predictions using three (ANL, French and H3T) thermal aging models for CASS show that the predictions can be very non-conservative at operating temperature, and thus that the existing thermal aging models for CASS cannot be applied to the welded stainless steels.

  • Purpose. The intent of this study was to evaluate the effects of curing conditions on self-curing denture base resins to find out proper condition in self-curing resin polymerization. Materials and methods, In this study, 3 commercial self-curing denture base resins are used Vertex SC, Tokuso Rebase and Jet Denture Repair Acrylic. After mixing the self curing resin, it was placed in a stainless steel mold(3$\times$6$\times$60mm). The mold containing the resin was placed under the following conditions: in air at 23$^{\circ}C$; or in water at 23$^{\circ}C$; or in water at 23$^{\circ}C$ under pressure(20psi); or in water at 37$^{\circ}C$ under pressure(20psi) or in water at 50$^{\circ}C$ under pressure(20psi) , or in water at 65$^{\circ}C$ under pressure(20psi), respectively. Also heat-curing denture base resin is polymerized according to manufactures' instructions as control. Fracture toughness was measured by a single edge notched beam(SENB) method. Notch about 3mm deep was carved at the center of the long axis of the specimen using a dental diamond disk driven by a dental micro engine. The flexural test was carried out at a crosshead speed 0.5mm/min and fracture surface were observed under measuring microscope. Results and conclusion . The results obtained were summarized as follows : 1. The fracture toughness value of self-curing denture base resins were relatively lower than that of heat-curing denture base resin. 2. In Vertex SC and Jet Denture Repair Acrylic, higher fracture toughness value was observed in the curing environment with pressure but in Tokuso Rebase, low fracture toughness value was observed but there was no statistical difference. 3. Higher fracture toughness value was observed in the curing environment with water than air but there was no statistical difference. 4. Raising the temperature in water showed the increase of fracture toughness.

  • In this research, three-point bending tests were performed using a rectangular frozen specimen with various fine contents and notch offset distance from the center of the specimen to investigate the fracture characteristic of the frozen sand. Based on the test results, mode I fracture toughness was calculated, and mixed-mode (mode I + II) fracture characteristics were investigated using the fracture energy which was calculated until the maximum point of the load-displacement curve. As the fine contents increase, the peak load and mode I fracture toughness increase until 10% fine contents. Furthermore, as the notch offset distance increases, the fracture energy required for crack start also increases due to the increase in mode II load at the crack tip.

  • Aluminum foam material has unique properties that make them useful in applications to the automobile, construction and railroad industries. In this study, aluminum was plasma-treated using nitrogen gas to improve fracture behavior between aluminum and aluminum foam material. SLS specimens were used for fracture tests. They were performed using plasma-treated and untreated aluminum/aluminum foam specimens. It was shown that the fracture strength and the tincture toughness of aluminum/aluminum foam were improved ${\sim}86%\;and\;{\sim}250%$, respectively when the aluminum was plasma-treated using nitrogen gas.

  • An experimental method to investigate the fracture strength and fracture toughness for the silicon nitrides sintered at various sintering temperature is established. The erosion rate for these materials in the various concentration of NaOH solution is also investigated. In result, the fracture strength of Si3N4 is decreased with the increase of sintering temperature. On the other hand, the fracture toughness KIC is increased with the increase of sintering temperature. The erosion rate of silicon nitride in the NaOH solution depend largely on the grain size and the concentration of NaOH solution. The erosion rate of silicon nitride sintered at $1800^{\circ}C$ was much higher than that at $1950^{\circ}C$. These results are due to the unique columnar structure of silicon nitride.

  • Welding structures will be occurred sudden crack or failure by reduced fracture toughness in case of low temperature. To protect these unstable fracture is very important. Because fracture of welding part come from welding faults or residual stress, critical stress intensity factors are acquired at temperatures between $22^{\circ}C$ and $-70^{\circ}C$ from base metal, welding metal and H.A.Z. It was studied effectiveness of annealing and affection of residual stress under low temperatures. In case of fracture toughness test, it showed that fracture toughness value decreased, according to the decrease of temperature. Expecially In case that compressive residual stress was existed, $K_C$ increased.

  • Fracture behaviors of an interface crack in a ductile layer sandwiched by rigid substrates are analyzed by finite element method. Several fracture mechanisms and the corresponding criteria are examined. And the crack growth behavior and fracture toughness are predicted. As the results, various crack growth procedures such as the crack jump to the other interface on the opposite side, the creation of a new crack far from the initial crack front, and the asymmetric relation of fracture toughness vs. mode mixity ($J_c$-$\Phi$) can be successfully explained.
