  • Xilinx 7-Series FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array)s mainly used for the implementation of high-performance digital circuit have SRAM-type configuration memory and can malfunction when soft errors occur in their configuration memory. SEM(Soft Error Mitigation Controller) offered by Xilinx helps users mitigate the influence of soft errors in configuration memory. When soft errors occur, SEM Controller can recover the state of FPGA through partial reconfiguration if the soft errors are correctable by ECC(Error Correction Code) and CRC(Cyclic Redundancy Code). This paper presents the availability analysis of Xilinx 7-Series FPGAs against soft errors under the protection of the SEM Controller. Availability functions are derived and compared according to the correction capability of the SEM Controller. The result may help to estimate the reliability of SRAM-based FPGA running in an environment where soft errors may occur.

  • Nuclear industries have faced unfavorable circumstances such as an obsolescence of the instrumentation and control system, and therefore nuclear society is striving to resolve this issue fundamentally. IEC and IAEA judge that FPGA technology is a good replacement for Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) of Nuclear Instrumentation and Control System. FPGAs are currently highlighted as an alternative means for obsolete control systems. Because the main function inside an FPGA is initially developed as software, good software quality can impact the reliability of an FPGA-based controller. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a software development aspect strategy that enhances the reliability of an FPGA-based controller. In terms of software development, HDL-Programmed Device (HPD) Development Life Cycle is applied into FPGA-based Controller. The burn-in test and environmental(temperature) test should be performed in order to apply into nuclear instrumentation and control system. Therefore it is ensured that the developed FPGA-based controller are normally operated for 352 hours and 92 hours in test chamber of Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM).

  • This paper presents a design of an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) -based currentcontroller. Using the nature of the high computational capability of FPGA, the digital delay due to the algorithm execution can be reduced. The control performance can be better than the conventional DSP (Digital Signal Processor)-based current controller. Moreover, this method does not need any delay compensation algorithm because the digital delay is physically diminished. Therefore, the bandwidth of the current controller can be extended by this method. The feasibility of this method is verified by several experimental results under the various conditions.

  • This paper presents FPGA implementation of fuzzy controller using Product-Sum inference method. Product-Sum inference method has much better performance than other inference methods. This fuzzy controller is composed of several digital modules, e.g. fuzzifier, rule base, adder, multiplier, select center and divider, and is operated by error and error variation. We synthesized the fuzzy controller and performed wave simulation using Xilinx VHDL tool(ViewLogic, ViewSim).

  • Nuclear industries have faced unfavorable circumstances such as an obsolescence of the instrumentation and control system, and therefore nuclear society is striving to resolve this trouble fundamentally. FPGAs are currently highlighted as an alternative means for obsolete control systems. Because of the obsolescence-unaffected characteristics, FPGA should be highly reliable in order to be a replacement for PLC (Programmable Logic Controller). Therefore, it is necessary to establish a software development aspect strategy that enhances the reliability of an FPGA-based controller. The reliability analysis including the MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) is carried out based on the MIL-HDBK-217F. MTBFs are compared with the FPGA-based controller COMMON-Q PLC. As an analysis result, it shows that the reliability of the FPGA-based controller is better than or equal to that of PLC.

  • The overall size of electronic product is becoming small according to development of technology. Accordingly it is difficult to inspect these small components by human eyes. So, an automation system for inspecting them has been used. The existing system put microprocessor or Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) use. The structure of microprocessor-based controller and PLC use basically composed of memory devices such as ROM, RAM and I/O ports. Accordingly, the system is not only becomes complicated and enlarged but also higher price. In this paper, we implement FPGA-based One-chip Programmable Timing Controller for Inspecting Small components to resolve above problems and design the high performance controller by using VHDL. With fast development, the FPGA of high capacity that can have memory and PLL have been introduced. By using the high-capacity FPGA, the peripherals of the existent controller, such as memory, I/O ports can be implemented in one FPGA. By doing this, because the complicated system can be simplified, the noise and power dissipation problems can be minimized and it can have the advantage in price. Since the proposed controller is organized to have internal register, counter, and software routines for generating timing signals, users do not have to problem the details about timing signals and need to only send some values about an inspection system through an RS232C port. By selecting theses values appropriate for a given inspection system, desired timing signals can be generated.

  • This paper proposes a design and implementation of multiplierless digital PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controller using FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) for controlling the speed of DC motor in digital system. The multiplierless PID structure is based on Distributed Arithmetic (DA). The DA is an efficient way to compute an inner product using partial products, each can be obtained by using look-up table. The PID controller is designed using MATLAB program to generate a set of coefficients associated with a desired controller characteristics. The controller coefficients are then included in VHDL (Very high speed integrated circuit Hardware Description Language) that implements the PID controller onto FPGA. MATLAB program is used to activate the PID controller, calculate and plot the time response of the control system. In addition, the hardware implementation uses VHDL and synthesis using FLEX10K Altera FPGA as target technology and use MAX+plusII program for overall development. Results in design are shown the speed performance and used area of FPGA. Finally, the experimental results can be shown when compared with the simulation results from MATLAB.
