Accurate and fast haptic simulations of deformable objects are desired in many applications such as medical virtual reality. In haptic interactions with a coarse model, the number of nodes near the haptic interaction region is too few to generate detailed deformation. Thus, local refinement techniques need to be developed. Many approaches have employed purely geometric subdivision schemes, but they are not proper in describing the deformation behavior of deformable objects. This paper presents a continuum mechanics-based finite element adaptive method to perform haptic interaction 'with a deformable object. This method superimposes a local fine mesh upon a global coarse model, which consists of the entire deformable object. The local mesh and the global mesh are coupled by the s-version finite element method (s-FEM), which is generally used to enhance accurate solutions near the target points even more. The s-FEM can demonstrate a reliable deformation to users in real-time.
The FEM technique was applied to simulate the change of stress characteristics for various structural parameters and loading positions of the load cell. The output voltage of the load cell was then computed to compare with the manufactured load cell. The tendency of the stress variations of the load cell was well agreed with the basic formula of the single fixed. beam. Also, the stress characteristics according to the change of loading positions showed respective featured results as different structure. The calculated output voltages of the load cell were very close to those of the real manufactured ones.
Time effect on the deformation and strength characteristics of geogrid reinforced sand retaining wall has become an important issue in geotechnical and transportation engineering. Three physical model tests on geogrid reinforced sand retaining walls performed under various loading conditions were simulated to study their rate-dependent behaviors, using the presented nonlinear finite element method (FEM) analysis procedure. This FEM was based on the dynamic relaxation method and return mapping scheme, in which the combined effects of the rate-dependent behaviors of both the backfill soil and the geosynthetic reinforcement have been included. The rate-dependent behaviors of sands and geogrids should be attributed to the viscous property of materials, which can be described by the unified three-component elasto-viscoplastic constitutive model. By comparing the FEM simulations and the test results, it can be found that the present FEM was able to be successfully extended to the boundary value problems of geosynthetic reinforced soil retaining walls. The deformation and strength characteristics of the geogrid reinforced sand retaining walls can be well reproduced. Loading rate effect, the trends of jump in footing pressure upon the step-changes in the loading rate, occurred not only on sands and geogrids but also on geogrid reinforced sands retaining walls. The lateral earth pressure distributions against the back of retaining wall, the local tensile force in the geogrid arranged in the retaining wall and the local stresses beneath the footing under various loading conditions can also be predicted well in the FEM simulations.
Severe element distortion problem is observed in finite element mesh while performing numerical simulations of high velocity steel projectiles penetration/perforation of concrete targets using finite element method (FEM). This problem of element distortion in Lagrangian formulation of FEM can be resolved by using element erosion methodology. Element erosion approach is applied in the finite element program by defining failure parameters as a condition for element elimination. In this study strain parameters for both compression and tension at failure are used as failure criteria. Since no direct method exists to determine these values, a calibration approach is used to establish suitable failure strain values while performing numerical simulations of ogive-nose steel projectile penetration/perforation into concrete target. A range of erosion parameters is suggested and adopted in concrete penetration/perforation tests to validate the suggested values. Good agreement between the numerical and field data is observed.
The deformation behavior of copper during equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was calculated using a three-dimensional version of a constitutive model based on the dislocation density evolution. Finite element simulations of the variation of the dislocation density and the dislocation cell size with the number of ECAP passes are reported. The calculated stress, strain and cell size are compared with the experimental data for Cu deformed by ECAP in a modified Route C regime. The results of FEM analysis were found to be in good agreement with the experiments. After a rapid initial decrease down to about 200 nm in the first ECAP pass, the average cell size was found to change little with further passes. Similarly, the strength increased steeply after the first pass, but tended to saturate with further pressings. The FEM simulations also showed strain non-uniformities and the dependence of the resulting strength on the location within the workpiece.

The optimal parameters for the fluid-structure interaction analysis using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) for fluids and finite elements for structures, respectively, are explored, and the effectiveness of the simulations with those parameters is validated by solving several open surface fluid problems. For the optimization of the Equation of State (EOS) and the simulation parameters such as the time step, initial particle spacing, and smoothing length factor, a dam-break problem and deflection of an elastic plate is selected, and the least squares analysis is performed on the simulation results. With the optimal values of the pivotal parameters, the accuracy of the simulation is validated by calculating the exerted force on a moving solid column in the open surface fluid. Overall, the SPH-FEM coupled simulation is very effective to calculate the fluid-structure interaction. However, the relevant parameters should be carefully selected to obtain accurate results.
In this study, we investigated the design of a wire wedge bonding ultrasonic tool horn using finite element method (FEM) simulations. The proposed method is based on an initial design estimate obtained by FEM analysis. An ultrasonic excitation causes various vibrations of a transducer horn and capillary. A simulated ultrasonic transducer horn and resonator are then built and characterized experimentally using a laser interferometer and electrical impedance analyzer. The vibration characteristics and resonance frequencies close to the exciting frequency are identified using ANSYS. FEM analysis is developed to predict the resonance frequency of the ultrasonic horn and use it in the optimal design of an ultrasonic horn mode shape.

In this study, a systematic approach for roll pass design in bar rolling was studied. To minimize the trial and errors in the process design, a roll CAD system and a FE analysis system were combined. Based on the system, a methodology for roll pass design by FEM was studied. At first, designed process was compared with the FE analysis results and process redesign based on the FEM results was performed to obtain the specified final geometry. Then, empirical formula for roll speed set-up was compared with the FE analysis results. Further study on various simulations for bar rolling will help in making up for the inaccuracy in the currently used empirical roll speed rules. In addition, verification of the accuracy of the FE analysis system must be performed using experimental data in the industry.
Predicting the mechanical properties of the 3-D scaffold using finite element method (FEM) simulation is important to the practical application of tissue engineering. However, the porous structure of the scaffold complicates computer simulations, and calculating scaffold models at the pore level is time-consuming. In some cases, the demands of the procedure are too high for a computer to run the standard code. To address this problem, the representative volume element (RVE) theory was introduced, but studies on RVE modeling applied to the 3-D scaffold model have not been focused. In this paper, we propose an improved FEM-based RVE modeling strategy to better predict the mechanical properties of the scaffold prior to fabrication. To improve the precision of RVE modeling, we evaluated various RVE models of newly designed 3-D scaffolds using FEM simulation. The scaffolds were then constructed using microstereolithography technology, and their mechanical properties were measured for comparison.

This paper investigates the effect of different flow models on the Pre-Swirl-Stator structural response from the perspective of a non-existing unified design procedure. Due to viscous effects near the propeller plane, the hydrodynamic solution is calculated by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Three different models are analysed: without the propeller, with the actuator disk and with the propeller. The main intention of this paper is to clarify the effects of the propeller model on the structural stresses in calm-water and waves which include the ship motion. CFD simulations are performed by means of OpenFOAM, while the structural response is calculated by means of the Finite Element Method (FEM) solver NASTRAN. Calm-water results have shown the inclusion of the propeller necessary from the design perspective, while the wave simulations have shown negligible propeller influence on the resulting stresses arising from the ship motions.
