  • This article investigates the potentialities of using empirical variables and their associated statistical relationships in document representation and retrieval. To this end, a newly devised empirical fact retrieval system was evaluated in comparison to a simulated traditional retrieval system involving a set of predetermined empirical queries. Results indicate that the EFRS generally outperformed the TRS in terms of the precision, search effort, and measures of user satisfaction.

  • The effects of added elements, such as Co or Nb, on wear properties of high speed steel by powder metallurgy(PM-HSS) had been evaluated in previous paper. The wear properties of materials, in fact, have been a]so influenced by heat-treating conditions. In this paper, the effects of heat-treating conditions on wear properties of PM-HSS have been evaluated. The wear tests have been performed as same conditions as previous paper using PM-HSS(5%Co-1%Nb) heat-treated under different quenching and tempering temperature. The result of this paper shows that wear resistance of PM-HSS is improved with relatively high quenching temperature. However tempering temperature is not sensitve to the wear resistance in range of high quenching temperature. It may be deduced by the fact that the shear strength of matrix by strengthening mechanisms of quenching aging in addition to dispersion-hardening is improved.

  • Relation between fluid inclusions and mineralization has been studied for 30 granitoid specimens from 19 localities in South Korea. Polyphase inclusions are found in granitoid specimens of 9 localities. In the vicinities of 6 localities among them occurs any of W, Cu or Fe deposits of the vein-, stockwork-, skarn-or pegmatite-type. On the contrary, no ore deposit is reported near the granitoids characterized by no polyphase inclusion except only one locality. This fact implies that the occurrence of polyphase inclusions is a good indicator for such kinds of mineralization. Ores and country rocks of some of the deposits contain polyphase inclusions in their quartz crystals. The fact that many polyphase inclusions occur in granitoids and ore constituents suggests that highly saline hydrothermal solution played an important role for the formation of such kinds of deposits. On the contrary, the granite and the ore of the Mugug gold deposit have many fluid inclusions, but are free from the polyphase type.

  • In recent years, the number of female workers pursuing careers in the construction engineering and management field has increased, despite the fact that the job positions have been traditionally considered as retaining job functions and/or qualities that are more appropriate to male than female. This may be attributed to the fact that the positions also require delicate and/or detail-oriented job functions, which can be successfully performed by female. It is important for project participants to understand the working conditions for female field managers by analyzing their job performance. This study collects expert opinions regarding female's managerial performance on job site. Survey questionnaires were administered to two focus groups, male and female field managers who work for general contractors. This study contributes to encouraging female's social and economic involvement by investigating the challenges they face in the workplace, and provides measures to respond to such challenges.

  • Seokssiwonryu originally published in China's Ming Dynasty was published twice in our country. While the engraved period of Bulamsa Temple version was clearly known from its obvious colophon indication, that of Seonunsa Temple version was not clearly identified with its colophon mentioning only its publishing temple. Thus, this study examined the relevant data such as Seonunsa Temple's history of its records and collection of the National Library of Korea, and as a result found a new fact that it had been engraved in 1710 not in 1649 as previously known.

  • Technological innovations, as the key to building competitive advantage, need a comprehensive review to address the issues related to transformation of the Indian industries. The present paper reports the broad findings of the first National Innovation Survey undertaken by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The findings presented here highlight the status of innovation related activities in different industrial sectors, its weaknesses, and areas requiring institutional interventions. The survey results underline the fact that the innovation activities in Indian industries are more for survival in a competitive market conditions than to create market advantage. A sort of disconnect between the innovation support system and the production system is a discernible fact that surfaces from the study. The study also indicates certain characteristics of the innovation behaviour of firms that brings out developing country issues of innovation.

  • The compressive strength of concrete is one of the most important properties in concrete structures. There are, two methods for the testing of concrete compressive strength in structure ; coring and nondestructive testing. The latter is more often used than the former in a view of time and expenses. The Nondestructive test methods used nowadays include Rebound Hammer test and Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity test. Carbonation through aging makes changes of the interior structure and the properties of concrete. It is well-known fact that the surface hardness of concrete is increased by its carbonation. This fact makes it difficult in estimating the compressive strength of concrete using Rebound Hammer test. This study aimed to quantitatively analyzed the effects of carbonation on results of the Rebound Hammer test.

  • It is well known fact for the iid data that the limiting standard errors of sample autocorrelations are all unity for all time lags and they are asymptotically independent for different lags (Brockwell and Davis, 1991). It is also usual practice in time series modeling that this fact continues to be valid for white noise series which is a sequence of uncorrelated random variables. This paper contradicts this usual practice for white noise. We consider a sequence of martingale differences which belongs to white noise time series and derive exact joint asymptotic distributions of sample autocorrelations. Some implications of the result are illustrated for conditionally heteroscedastic time series.

  • Purpose: This study was to identify predictors of quality of life in breast cancer patients. Physical and pscyhological factors like stress, mood, and fatigue with sociodemographic factors like education, income, job and stage of disease were used to predict quality of life. Methods: One hundred eleven patients with breast cancer participated in this study? The functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast(FACT-B) was used to assess quality of life. Results: The mean age of the patients was 46.7 years. The FACT-B mean score was 89.89(SD:17.31) Education, income, job and stage of disease were significantly associated with QOL. In a regression analysis, mood, income, and fatigue were significant predictors for QOL where as, stress was not significant. Among the subscales of QOL, physical well-being, functional well-being, emotional well-being, and the breast cancer subscale were included as predictors of QOL Conclusion: Physical and psychological factors were strong predictors of QOL. These results demonstrate the need for interventions to improve QOL in breast cancer survivors.

  • In spite of the fact that the system of oriental medicine still remains in the realm of 'unproven-method of treatment', no one can deny that the oriental medicine is a rich source of idea and motivation for the discovery of new drug from natural sources. However, non-scientific, mystic hypothetical system of oriental medicine refuses to be revealed scientifically. For the purpose of drawing useful parameters for inductive reasoning of the system, a new approach which comprises statistical analyses of prescription was attempted in this study. One hundred and thirty two ginseng-compounds prescription in 'Bang-Yak-Hap-Pyon', one of the most popular formularies of oriental medicine in Korea, were analysed by multivariate analysis technique. The results revealed ginseng from many points of view, e.g., therapeutic indications, dose, and compatibility, etc. Among these, the most striking coincidence with scientific achievements of modern pharmacology, is the fact that the oriental medicine has characterized ginseng already from remote ancient times as neither a specific curative nor an aphrodisiac, but a non-specific adaptogenic drug for general infirmity.
