  • The 1-D finite-element mehtod is applied for designing double-clad otpical fibers with dispersion-compensation capability. design parameters allowing only a $LP_{01}$ single mode are treated and macro-bending loss are taken into consideration. Design parameters are extracted to have the compensation ratio $(L_{SMF}/L_{DCF})$ of 6.2 for core structure with step-index profile, and of 5.2 for core with triangular-index profile.

  • A new transmission scheme is presented for transmitting motion video at very low data rates. In this scheme, two-level cartoons are extracted from gray-level images, and their interframe differences are coded using 2D run-length coding. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme yields compression ratio as high as 216:1.

  • Rifampicin reacts with cupric ion to produce rifampicin-Cu(II) chelate (2:1) at pH 6.5, which can be extracted with methylisobutylketone (MIBK). Therefore, rifampicin can be quantitatively, determined by measuring the quantity of Cu(II) in the organic phase by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Because higher absorbance ratio was obtained in pH 6.0~7.0, buffer solution at pH 6.5 was used in this measurement. Linear relationship was found between absorbance and concentration in the range of 1.0~4.0${\times}10^{-4}M$. This method might be applicable to the determination of rifampicin in the preparations.

  • The ratio of dissociation rate $textsc{k}$-acversus the radiative decay rate $textsc{k}$D of the 1O2(1Δg) dimol has been determined to be $1.5\times$109 by its relaxation dynamcis in combination with a two-step O2((1Δg) sensitizing tetratert-butylphthalocoyanine luminescence. Consequently, with a known $textsc{k}$D value of 1.2 $\times$103S-1 , 10$textsc{k}$-ac has been extracted to be 1.8 $\times$1012S-1 CDCl3.

  • The effects of major cations in soils, soil : extractant ratio, and EDTA : lead stoichiometric ratio on the extraction efficiency of lead using EDTA were studied for 4 different actual lead-contaminated soils and one artificially lead-contaminated soil. Extraction of lead from the lead-contaminated soil was not affected by a soil : extractant ratio as low as 1 : 3 but instead was dependent on the quantity of EDTA present. Results of the experiments showed that the extraction efficiency for each soil was different, but if sufficiently large amount of EDTA was applied, all the lead may be extracted except for a soil from lead mining area. The differences in extraction efficiencies nay be due to the major cations present in soils which may compete with lead for active sites on EDTA. The total molar amount of major cations extracted was as muck as 20 times more than the added molar amount of EDTA. For some of the soils tested, the extraction efficiency of lead may be affected by being occluded in the Fe and Mn oxides present in the soil. While major cations present in the soil may be one of the factors affecting lead extraction efficiency, the type of lead species present may also play a role. When these factors affect severely, the using of EDTA to extract lead from lead-contaminated soil might be non-effective method.

  • In this paper, an Adaptive nerou-based inference system (ANFIS) is being used for the prediction of shear strength of high strength concrete (HSC) beams without stirrups. The input parameters comprise of tensile reinforcement ratio, concrete compressive strength and shear span to depth ratio. Additionally, 122 experimental datasets were extracted from the literature review on the HSC beams with some comparable cross sectional dimensions and loading conditions. A comparative analysis has been carried out on the predicted shear strength of HSC beams without stirrups via the ANFIS method with those from the CEB-FIP Model Code (1990), AASHTO LRFD 1994 and CSA A23.3 - 94 codes of design. The shear strength prediction with ANFIS is discovered to be superior to CEB-FIP Model Code (1990), AASHTO LRFD 1994 and CSA A23.3 - 94. The predictions obtained from the ANFIS are harmonious with the test results not accounting for the shear span to depth ratio, tensile reinforcement ratio and concrete compressive strength; the data of the average, variance, correlation coefficient and coefficient of variation (CV) of the ratio between the shear strength predicted using the ANFIS method and the real shear strength are 0.995, 0.014, 0.969 and 11.97%, respectively. Taking a look at the CV index, the shear strength prediction shows better in nonlinear iterations such as the ANFIS for shear strength prediction of HSC beams without stirrups.

  • Various parameters such as solvent selection, concentration, solid/liquid ratio, soaking time, temperature, stationary, shaking conditions, and repeated extractions were investigated in order to determine the optimum extraction conditions of ${\beta}$-glucosidase from bagasse fermented by mixed culture of Aspergillus niger NRC 7A and Aspergillus oryzae NRRL 447. Among various solvents tested, non ionic detergents gave the best results than the inorganic or organic salt solutions and distilled water. The optimum conditions for extraction of ${\beta}$-glucosidase were 30 min soaking time at $40^{\circ}C$ under shaking condition at 150 rpm, with solid/liquid ratio 1:15 (w/v), which yielded $2882.74{\pm}95.52U/g$ fermented culture (g fc) of enzyme activity. With repeated washes under the above optimum conditions, the results showed that enzyme extracted in the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ washes represents about 90% of the total activity.

  • To investigate antitumor component of Lyophyllum decastes, the aqueous extract of its shake-cultured mycelia was subjected to antitumor test against sarcoma 180 cells implanted in ICR mice. The extract showed an inhibition ratio of 65.4% and was found to consist of a polysaccharide moiety and a protein moiety. After purification with DEAE-Sephadex A-50 ion exchange chromatography, Fraction D showed the highest inhibition ratio of 75.7%. The antitumor constituent was examined for immunoaccelerating activity and was found to increase macrophage accumulation in the peritoneal cavity and plaque forming cells of the spleen cells. It was named lyophyllan after the genus name.

  • We propose an algorithm to detect the face region using a variable ellipsoidal mask and a neural network. Since outlines of human faces are similar to ellipsoid, the ellipsoidal mask that has the fixed ratio of major and minor axis can be used to detect the candidate area. The positions of eyes and lips are extracted in this candidate area, and then the morphological analysis is applied to make features which are consist of six parameters, such as the geometrical ratio of eyes and lips. A back-propagation neural network is used as a classifier to determine the most possible face region. The experimental result is conducted to verify its efficiency compared with those of previous works.
