  • The purpose of this study is to examine expression characteristics of Koreanity of indoor spaces and food-related elements in Korean restaurants that preserve Korean cultural identity and to acquire basic datas for total design planning that integrates not only spaces but also food-related design elements including food, tableware, table setting and food styling. For these purposes, we selected 18 Korean restaurants showing Koreanity based on related magazines issued during the period from 2000 to 2005 and Internet sites related food. The survey method is to investigate the selected restaurants visited in person, and the intangible and tangible characteristics of their indoor spaces and food-related elements were recorded in detail, photographed and analyzed. The results of study is as follows: First, among intangible elements, the most frequent one in space was formative aesthetic characteristic(60%), and that in food is socio-cultural characteristic(60%). Second, as to Koreanity expression methods through tangible elements, the most frequent method for space was the use of contemporary elements as mains and traditional elements as supplements (11cases) and that in food is compromise between traditional food and contemporary recomposition (16cases). In order to develop competitive Korean restaurants in the global age, we need to create stories based on various intangible elements found in our indigenous culture beyond fixed traditional designs from the past and to produce total designs of food space design and table settings through consistent concepts.

  • The food and beverage spaces of modern industrial society have transformed from a simple space for meals into a space of culture, communication and experience as society becomes more complex and diverse along side economic growth. An interior designer who is rapidly rising on this flow of change is Yukio Hashimoto. While working for interior design firm Super Potato, which highlights food and beverage spaces, he was much affected by the expression methods of representative designer Takashi Sugimoto, who makes use of natural elements. By using these expression methods that make use of natural elements in his own creation of spatial ambience and elements of experience and by adding his own differentiated expression methods, he emphasizes an effective spatial expression for food and beverage spaces. The design characteristics of Yukio Hashimoto's food and beverage spaces are as follows. First natural elements like light and water are recreated as memories of nature after being established through a methodology that allows these elements to penetrate his own thoughts. Second, he pursues a hybrid design through the harmony between past tradition and current expressive techniques. Third, he expresses objets of light through a formative sense of shape expressed with light.. Fourth, he establishes an axis in the interior space by light and structure and endows a strong directionality that induces symmetric characteristics, gaze, and movement.. Fifth, he installs lights at the bottom of weighty materials and expresses a sense of floating by light. Sixth, he uses an illusion technique that makes use of the ambiguity and depth of space resulting from reflecting materials like mirrors. The study hopes that such design expression characteristics of food and beverage spaces can be used as data for interior designers to apply and develop a new design vocabulary.

  • Regeneration of abandoned industrial facilities can heighten the availability through potential values that cannot be found in newly-built buildings and through the sense of overscale space. Furthermore, backward regions can be activated by assigning their identity and establishing social-cultural infrastructures. The aim of the present study is to analyze and integrate of characteristics of design expression based on a case of creative space in Shanghai. A research on the creative space in Shanghi designedly proceeded according to government's extensive administrative support and policy. We keep appearances of industrial buildings as close as possible to their original condition, thereby revealing symbolism and forming unique characteristics that distinguish them from those of other areas. While keeping the shape characteristics of the bridge8, M50, Red Town, 2577 Greative Garden and 1933 Shanghai, we designed spaces in terms of spacial variability, oneness, accessibility and continuity and activated areas by inducing residents' participation and fostering art and cultural oriented facilities. These characteristics of design expression are factors to be considered in regenerating abandoned industrial facilities internally and hopefully they are used as a reference of design plan.

  • A variety of attempts for trends to overcome the limits of the uniform styles and a fixed dichotomous structure and thoughts, have been made. This research aims to apply and analyze the application of concepts of the liminal space of contemporary architecture based on the destructive inclination of post-structuralism and the theories of philosophers. Space of the past was recognized for a long time focused on functions and styles that support the building. In modern and contemporary spaces, however, the boundary of contemporary space has been blurred with the mingling of cultural phenomenon. In other words, new architectural approaches of expression have been attempted such as structure, styles and materials, in combination of diversified concepts. And, the concept of liminal space is useful to identify the multi-layered and fluid characteristics. This study examines various characteristics of expression on the liminal space characteristics of comtemporary architecture tbased on Herzog and de Meuron's architecture. The result will help us understand the expression and characteristics of the liminal space that belongs nowhere among their architectural spaces. The analysis of the ases of Herzog and de Meuron will play a crucial role in developing new possibilities of modern space and contemporary space of the future.

  • This study aims to identify the design of men's wear that has the characteristics of expressing maximalism in men's wear collection and contribute to the field of men's wear fashion which expects new, original, and experimental fashion styles to be created. When it comes to research contents, this study first identifies the concept and characteristics of expression of maximalism in such fields as literature and art and based on this, makes a case study of men's wear fashion designs shown in men's wear collection and then understands the type of characteristics of expressing maximalism and the characteristics related to its expressive method in men's wear design. The study findings are as follows: First, expansion referred to the extreme avant-garde that changed the concept of fashion design by expanding clothes or accessories or exaggerating silhouettes. Second, fanciness continued to appear as a tool to use the luxurious decorations that applied fancy handicraft techniques and express the world of original design. Third, fusion represented the expression of various charms from one work without making any classifications between the tradition and the present and between the east and the west. Fourth, fantasy indicated the expression of surrealistic images by expressing the unbounded imagination through creative ideas.

  • The purpose of this study was to expand the expression of Fashion Illustration using Lenticular imaging process. In the 2-dimensional pictures, Lenticular imaging process can be effective to make multiple, virtual and variable images, which are assumed the main characteristics of modern Fashion Illustration. For this study, the main characteristics of digital based fashion trend and Fashion Illustration were analyzed. The main characteristics of digital based fashion were 'Interaction, Variableness, Virtuality, Multiples and Hyper-text' which were related with Simulacre thinking. The main characteristics of expression in Fashion Illustration were 'Virtuality and Multiples'. The image of 'Variableness' was an important factor in digital based fashion, but it was restricted within Fashion Illustration because of the 2-dimensional picture. Therefore, the Lenticular imaging process was proposed as an effective method to expand 2-dimensional limit, giving an effect of 'Variableness' in Fashion Illustration. Based on this study, 5 illustration works were proposed. The Lenticular imaging process was applied in making the images of 'Virtuality, Multiples and Variableness' in 5 works. The result of this study can be a basic material to understand the characteristics of modern Fashion Illustration as a meaningful sub-culture, and diverse expressions corresponding with the phases of the times.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide ideas for the development of bag design by analyzing the expression types and aesthetic formativeness of modern bag design using tassels and fringe given the newtro trend pursuing analog sensitivity in modern society. The methods and scope of this study are as follows. First, the related literature and internet data were reviewed in order to examine the expression types and characteristics of the bags of the West and East. Next, the definition and characteristics of tassel and fringe decoration in terms of the history of clothing were analyzed. Finally, the expression types and aesthetic formativeness of tassels and fringe were derived through the analysis of modern bag design shown in the fashion collections since 2010. The bags decorated with the tassels and fringe bring a variety of visual effects depending on the attachment position, direction and material composition, concentrating the gaze and radiating original style. In this study, the expression of tassels and fringe in modern bag design was classified into three types: surface decoration, shape variability, and object combination. Next, the aesthetic formativeness of modern bag design using tassels and fringe as decorative elements appeared through the mixture of heterogeneous materials and playfulness through imagination, exaggeration through extension of length and volume, and retro characteristics through reinterpretation of tradition. This study is expected to contribute to creative ideas of modern bag design which requires a global sense, which has been used in various cultures for a long time.

  • Aim: To investigate the expression of three components of the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway (SHH, SMO and GLI1) in human colorectal cancer (CRC) tissues and evaluate their association with clinicopathologic characteristics of the patients. Methods: Fresh tumor tissues and matched tissues adjacent to the tumor were collected from 43 CRC patients undergoing surgery. Normal colorectal tissues from 20 non-CRC cases were also sampled as normal controls. The expression of SHH, SMO, GLI1 mRNAs was assessed by RT-PCR and proteins were detected by immunohistochemical staining. Associations with clinicopathological characteristics of patients were analyzed. Results: SHH mRNA was expressed more frequently in tumor tissues than in normal tissues, but the difference did not reach significance in comparison to that in the adjacent tissues. SMO and GLI1 mRNAs were expressed more frequently in tumor tissues than in both adjacent andnormal tissues. The expression intensities of SHH, SMO, GLI1 mRNA in tumor tissues were significantly higher than those in adjacent tissues and normal tissues. Proteins were also detected more frequently in tumors than other tissues. No significant links were apparent with gender, age, location, degree of infiltration or Dukes stage. Conclusion: Positive rates and intensities of mRNA and protein expression of Hh signaling pathway related genes SHH, SMO, GLI1 were found to be significantly increased in CRC tissues. However, over-expression did not appear to be associated with particular clinicopathological characteristics.

  • Human embryonic stem (hES) cells have unique features including unlimited growth capacity, expression of specific markers, normal karyotypes and an ability to differentiate. Many investigators have tried to use hES cells for cell-based therapy, but there is little information about the properties of available hES cell lines. We compared the characteristics of three hES cell lines. The expression of SSEA-1, -3, -4, and APase, was examined by immunocytochemistry, and Oct-4 expression was analyzed by RT-PCR. Differentiation of the hES cells in vitro and in vivo led to the formation of embryoid bodies (EBs) or teratomas. We examined the expression of tissue-specific markers in the differentiated cells by semiquantitative RT-PCR, and the ability of each hES cell line to proliferate was measured by flow cytometry of DNA content and ELISA. The three hES cell lines were similar in morphology, marker expression, and teratoma formation. However there were significant differences (P < 0.05) between the differentiated cells formed by the different cell lines in levels of expression of tissue-specific markers such as renin, kallikrein, Glut-2, ${\beta}-$ and ${\delta}-globin$, albumin, and ${\alpha}1-antitrypsin$ (${\alpha}1-AT$). The hES cell lines also differed in proliferative activity. Our observations should be useful in basic and clinical hES cell research.
