Low-frequency damping characteristics of side-by-side moored LNG-FPSO and LNGC arc investigated through a series of free decay model tests in calm water and under wind load condition. It is shown that low frequency damping of LNGC changes dramatically, sway damping increases more than six times for 4m distance condition while it decreases by $30\%$ for 20m distance compared with a single LNGC case. Simulation using the experimental data enhances the results, which demonstrates the necessity of experimental low-frequency damping coefficients for simulation of side-by-side vessels motion behavior.
In this paper, experimental and theoretical investigations on the response and collapse of 310 stainless steel tubes with different diameter-to-thickness ratios subjected to cyclic bending are discussed. The tube-bending device and curvature-ovalization measurement apparatus were used to conduct the experiment. The endochronic theory combined with the principle of virtual work and finite element software, ANSYS, were used to simulate the moment-curvature and ovalization-curvature relationships. It is shown that although the two methods lead to good simulation of the moment-curvature relationship, the endochronic theory combined with the principle of virtual work has the better simulation of the ovalization-curvature response when compared with experimental data and the simulation by ANSYS. In addition, the theoretical formulations proposed by Kyriakides and Shaw (1987) and Lee et al. (2001) were used to simulate the controlled curvature-number of cycles to produce buckling relationship. It is shown that the theoretical formulations effectively simulate the experimental data.

Supercavitation is one of the most attractive technologies to achieve high speed for underwater vehicles. However, the multiphase flow with high-speed around the supercavitating vehicle (SCV) is difficult to simulate accurately. In this paper, we use modified the turbulent viscosity formula in the Standard K-Epsilon (SKE) turbulent model to simulate the supercavitating flow. The numerical results of flow over several typical cavitators are in agreement with the experimental data and theoretical prediction. In the last part, a flying SCV was studied by unsteady numerical simulation. The selected computation setup corresponds to an outdoor supercavitating experiment. Only very limited experimental data was recorded due to the difficulties under the circumstance of high-speed underwater condition. However, the numerical simulation recovers the whole scenario, the results are qualitatively reasonable by comparing to the experimental observations. The drag reduction capacity of supercavitation is evaluated by comparing with a moving vehicle launching at the same speed but without supercavitation. The results show that the supercavitation reduces the drag of the vehicle dramatically.
Refinements with atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulation have contributed to improving the qualities of NMR structures. In most cases, the calculations with atomistic MD simulation for NMR structures employ generalized-Born implicit solvent model (GBIS) to take into accounts solvation effects. Developments in algorithms and computational capacities have ameliorated GBIS to approximate solvation effects that explicit solvents bring about. However, the quantitative comparison of NMR structures in the latest GBIS and explicit solvents is lacking. In this study, we report the direct comparison of NMR structures that atomistic MD simulation coupled with GBIS and water molecules refined. Two model proteins, GB1 and ubiquitin, were recalculated with experimental distance and torsion angle restraints, under a series of simulated annealing time steps. Whereas the root mean square deviations of the resulting structures were apparently similar, AMBER energies, the most favored regions in Ramachandran plot, and MolProbity clash scores witnessed that GBIS-refined structures had the better geometries. The outperformance by GBIS was distinct in the structure calculations with sparse experimental restraints. We show that the superiority stemmed, at least in parts, from the inclusion of all the pairs of non-bonded interactions. The shorter computational times with GBIS than those for explicit solvents makes GBIS a powerful method for improving structural qualities particularly under the conditions that experimental restraints are insufficient. We also propose a method to separate the native-like folds from non-violating diverged structures.
Non-destructive exploration using elastic waves has been widely used to characterize rock mass properties. Wave propagation in jointed rock masses is significantly governed by the characteristics and orientation of discontinuities. The relationship between spatial heterogeneity (i.e., joint spacing) and wavelength for elastic waves propagating through jointed rock masses have been investigated previously. Discontinuous rock masses can be considered as an equivalent continuum material when the wavelength of the propagating elastic wave exceeds the spatial heterogeneity. However, it is unclear how stress-dependent long-wavelength elastic waves propagate through a repetitive rock-joint system with multiple joints. A preliminary numerical simulation was performed in in this study to investigate long-wavelength elastic wave propagation in regularly jointed rock masses using the three-dimensional distinct element code program. First, experimental studies using the quasi-static resonant column (QSRC) testing device are performed on regularly jointed disc column specimens for three different materials (acetal, aluminum, and gneiss). The P- and S-wave velocities of the specimens are obtained under various normal stress levels. The normal and shear joint stiffness are calculated from the experimental results using an equivalent continuum model and used as input parameters for numerical analysis. The spatial and temporal sizes are carefully selected to guarantee a stable numerical simulation. Based on the calibrated jointed rock model, the numerical and experimental results are compared.
In structural reliability analysis, the response surface method is a powerful method to evaluate the probability of failure. However, the location of experimental points used to form a response surface function must be selected in a judicious way. It is necessary for the highly nonlinear limit state functions to consider the design point and the nonlinear trend of the limit state, because both of them influence the probability of failure. In this paper, in order to approximate the actual limit state more accurately, experimental points are selected close to the design point and the actual limit state, and consider the nonlinear trend of the limit state. Linear, quadratic and cubic polynomials without mixed terms are utilized to approximate the actual limit state. The direct Monte Carlo simulation on the approximated limit state is carried out to determine the probability of failure. Four examples are given to demonstrate the efficiency and the accuracy of the proposed method for both numerical and implicit limit states.
A heat sink system using nanofluidic thermosyphon for electronics systems was studied. The experimental results indicate that a cooling capacity of up to 150 W at an overall temperature difference of $50^{\circ}C$ can be attainable. The heat sink design program also showed that a computer simulation can predict the most of the parameters involved. In the experimental study, the volume concentration of nano particles affect the system performance. Nanofluidic thermosyphon with 0.5% volume concentration showed the best performance. Nanofluid can increase CHF of the system compared with water as a working fluid. The current simulation results were close to the experimental results in acceptable range. The simulation study showed that the design program can be a good tool to predict the effects of various parameters involved in the optimum design of the heat sink.

As a regenerated turbulent wind field process, wind tunnel test has proven to be a promising approach for investigating the transmission tower-line system (TTLS) performance in view of experimental scaled models design, simulation techniques of wind field, and wind induced responses subjected to typhoon. However, the challenges still remain in using various wind tunnels to regenerate turbulent wind field with considerable progress having been made in recent years. This review paper provides an overview of the state-of-the-art of the wind tunnel based on active or passive controlled simulation techniques. Specific attention and critical assessment have been given to: (a) the design of experimental scaled models, (b) the simulation techniques of wind field, and (c) the responses of TTLS subjected to typhoon in wind tunnel. This review concludes with the research challenges and recommendations for future research direction.
The hydrogen behavior in a nuclear containment vessel is a significant issue when discussing the potential of hydrogen combustion during a severe accident. After the Fukushima-Daiichi accident in Japan, we have investigated in-depth the hydrogen transport mechanisms by utilizing experimental and numerical approaches. Computational fluid dynamics is a powerful tool for better understanding the transport behavior of gas mixtures, including hydrogen. This paper describes a Large-eddy simulation of gas mixing driven by a high-buoyancy flow. We focused on the interaction behavior of heat and mass transfers driven by the horizontal high-buoyant flow during density stratification. For validation, the experimental data of the Containment InteGral effects Measurement Apparatus (CIGMA) facility were used. With a high-power heater for the gas-injection line in the CIGMA facility, a high-temperature flow of approximately 390 ℃ was injected into the test vessel. By using the CIGMA facility, we can extend the experimental data to the high-temperature region. The phenomenological discussion in this paper helps understand the heat and mass transfer induced by the high-buoyancy flow in the containment vessel during a severe accident.

A novel type of buckling restrained brace with built-up angle steel was developed. The core segment was formed by welding angle steel, and the middle section was reduced by cutting technology to solve the problem that the end of BRB was easy to buckle. The experimental program has been undertaken to study the performance of BRBs with different unbonded materials (silica gel, kraft paper) and different filler materials (ordinary concrete, full light-weight concrete). Four specimens were designed and fabricated for low cycle reciprocating load tests to simulate horizontal seismic action. The failure mode, hysteretic curves, tension-compression unbalance coefficient and other mechanical parameters were compared and analyzed. The finite element software ABAQUS was used to conduct numerical simulation, and the simulation results were compared with the experimental phenomena. The test results indicated that the hysteretic curve of each specimen was plump. Sustaining cumulative strains of each specimen was greater than the minimum value of 200 required by the code, which indicated the ductility of BRB was relatively good. The energy dissipation coefficient of the specimen with silica gel as unbonded material was about 13% higher than that with kraft paper. The experimental results were in good agreement with the simulation results.
