Successfully treated infective endocarditis caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus in extremely low birth weight infant

  • Survival rates of preterm infants have improved in the past few decades, and central venous catheters play an important role in the intensive medical treatment of these neonates. Unfortunately, these indwelling catheters increase the risk of intracardiac thrombosis, and they provide a nidus for microorganisms during the course of septicemia. Herein, we report a case of persistent bacteremia due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in an extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infant, along with vegetation observed on an echocardiogram, the findings which are compatible with a diagnosis of endocarditis. The endocarditis was successfully treated with antibiotic therapy, and the patient recovered without major complications. We suggest a surveillance echocardiogram for ELBW infants within a few days of birth, with regular follow-up studies when clinical signs of sepsis are observed.

  • Hashimoto's encephalopathy (HE) is a rare, poorly understood, autoimmune disease characterized by symptoms of acute or subacute encephalopathy associated with increased anti-thyroid antibody levels. Here, we report a case of a 14-year-old girl with HE and briefly review the literature. The patient presented with acute mental changes and seizures, but no evidence of infectious encephalitis. In the acute stage, the seizures did not respond to conventional antiepileptic drugs, including valproic acid, phenytoin, and topiramate. The clinical course was complicated by the development of acute psychosis, including bipolar mood, insomnia, agitation, and hallucinations. The diagnosis of HE was supported by positive results for antithyroperoxidase and antithyroglobulin antibodies. Treatment with methylprednisolone was effective; her psychosis improved and the number of seizures decreased. HE is a serious but curable, condition, which might be underdiagnosed if not suspected. Anti-thyroid antibodies must be measured for the diagnosis. HE should be considered in patients with diverse neuropsychiatric manifestations.

Deformation Characteristics of Coal Ash due to Repeated Compressive Loading (석탄회(石炭灰)의 반복재하(反復載荷)에 의한 변형특성( 變形特性))

  • In order to utilize coal ash, which we go to great expense to scrap, as subba se course material, this study attempts to examine the deformation characteristics of coal ash with the addition of some cement when repeated loads are applied. The material of coal ash is obtained from Young dong and Youngwol thermal power plant. The results are : Unconfined compression strength shows rectilineal increase in propotion to the cement addition ratio. Within the scope of repeated loads of experimental condition, modulus of elasticity tends to decrease while compression strength shows about 21% increase.

  • According to the characteristics of elementary school students in favor of playing games, and to their high energy levels and physical growth states, it is fair to say that students can learn mathematics through 'game playing activities.' These activities are considered to intrigue their interest in class and make them feel less stress from the burden of studying mathematics. Mr. Skemp, who had conducted research on 'game activity' with experimental studies relating to elementary mathematics, recommends that math teachers try to give as many activity-oriented classes as possible to students. The method of 'game activity' by Skemp's operation deals with the whole range of mathematical themes. It is believed by other math teachers that this is not a way to substitute free time or just to have fun in class, but an intentionally well-organized way of learning an entire mathematical course during elementary school. In this research, 5th and 6th grade students needing extra classes after school had been exposed to 'ame activity' by Skemp's operation. As a result, we can figure out its influence on their understanding of arithmetic ability, and on the cognitive definition territory in their minds.

  • In this study we developed a textbook for middle school mathematics, especially focusing on the 1st grade, based on storytelling, did experimental lessons using the developed textbook, and surveyed the responses of students to the lesson by three kinds of questionnaire and teacher interview. The results of this study can serve as basic data for other researches about storytelling-related education in school mathematics.

Testing for Speed-Independent Asynchronous Circuits Using the Self-Checking Property (자가검사특성을 이용한 속도독립 비동기회로의 테스팅)

  • In this paper, we have proposed a testing methodology for Speed-Independent asynchronous control circuits using the self-checking property where the circuit detects certain classes of faults during normal operation. To exploit self-checking properties of Speed-Independent circuits, the Proposed methodology generates tests from the specification of the target circuit which describes the behavior of the circuit. The generated tests are applied to a fault-free and a faulty circuit, and target faults can be detected by the comparison of the outputs of the both circuits. For the purpose of efficient comparison, reachability information of the both circuits in the form of BDD's is used and operations are conducted by BDD manipulations. The identification for undetectable faults in testing is also used to increase efficiency of the proposed methodology. The proposed identification uses only topological information of the target circuit and reachability information of the good circuit which was generated in the course of preprocess. Experimental results show that high fault coverage is obtained for synthesized Speed-Independent circuits and the use of the identification process decreases the number of tests and execution time.

An Experimental Study on the Vertical Motion of a High-Speed Planing Craft in Regular Following Waves (선미 규칙파 중 고속 활주선의 연직면 운동에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • It is well known that when a high-speed planing craft travels in following seas it experiences long-periodic motions due to low encounter frequency, and it often loses its course keeping stability. Therefore, it is necessary to study the sea-keeping performance and stability of it in the following seas. In this paper, the vertical motions of a planing craft were measured in following regular waves, and the test results were compared with the theoretical results. In the case of the same encounter frequency, non-dimensionalized motion amplitudes become larger as Froude number is higher, and non-dimensionalized motion amplitudes in head waves are larger than those in following waves. The mean values of the motions in following waves are similar to the running attitudes of a craft in calm water at the same Froude number.

  • In the past, traditional methods of research on ship maneuvering performance were estimated in calm waters. However, the course-keeping ability and the maneuvering performance of a ship can be influenced by the presence of waves. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the maneuvering behavior of a ship in waves. In this study, the force acting on a moving ship and a rudder behind the model ship will be performed in regular waves in Changwon National University (CWNU). In addition, the prediction force acting on the rudder in calm waters was carried out and compared with those of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Model test in regular wave was performed to predict the force acting on the ship and the rudder behind the model ship in various wave directions. The effects of wavelength and wave direction on hydrodynamic forces acting on the ship hull versus rudder angle is discussed.

  • Recently remote sensing technology is applied for construction projects planning and design areas by use of remote sensed satellite images according to engineering application technology in the various experimental tasks. In this study, It was applied for 3 dimensional terrain analysis and basic design by comparing to present railway and new expand doble-tract railway route of forest sites on the new construction site of 15km at national railway lines, and then showed 3-D perspective images and fly simulation images to possibility for various application as terrain analysis modeling and running simulation at the course. As a results of its applied, It gained the results not only improvement of present methods but also real various application possibilities.

Approaches to the diagnosis and management of chronic urticaria in children

  • Most guidelines for chronic urticaria (CU) in infants and children are based on limited pediatric evidence. Current evidence used to guide treatment in children is extrapolated from data focusing on older age groups. CU in children is a different and complex condition than that in adults. Furthermore, there is little published information regarding urticaria in Korean children. The aim of the present article is to review recent research on chronic childhood urticaria and improve the current understanding of its pathogenesis and management. The classification and definition of urticaria in adults also applies to children. CU is defined as a daily occurrence of spontaneous wheals, angioedema, or both for >6 weeks. The precise pathophysiology of CU is unknown and the rates of successful identification of a cause in children with CU vary from 20%-50%. There is no established laboratory test to evaluate the presence of urticaria. The natural course of childhood CU is undetermined, with limited reports discussing long-term outcomes. Second-generation H1 antihistamines are the cornerstone of management, while limited therapeutic drugs are available for adults.
