  • Design space optimization using design space adjustment and refinement is used to optimize a knuckle in the suspension system of an automobile. This approach is a new efficient method for large-scale topology optimization by virtue of two reasons. First, design space adjustment including design space expansion and reduction is suitable for large-scale problems. Second, the design space refinement can be done globally or locally where and when necessary and thus is very effective in obtaining a target resolution with much less number of elements. Compliance minimization for a knuckle is considered with a realistic working condition to show the effectiveness and superiority of the new approach.

  • The theoretical method is developed to investigate the effects of ring stiffeners on free vibration characteristics and transient response for the ring stiffened composite cylindrical shells subjected to the impulse pressure Loading. In the theoretical procedure, the Love's thin shell theory combined with the discrete stiffener theory to consider the ring stiffening effect is adopted to formulate the theoretical model. The concentric or eccentric ring stiffeners are laminated with composite and have the uniform rectangular cross section. The modal analysis technique is used to develop the analytical solutions of the transient problem. The analysis is based on an expansion of the loads, displacements in the double Fourier series that satisfy the boundary conditions. The effect of stiffener's eccentricity, number, size, and position on transient response of the shells is examined. The results are verified by comparison with FEM results.

  • The convection heat transfer coefficients on the top surface of a large liquid petroleum liquid injection(LPLi) engine piston with the oil gallery are analyzed by solving an inverse thermal conduction problem. The heat transfer coefficients are numerically found so that the difference between analyzed temperatures from the finite element method and measured temperatures is minimized. Using the resulting heat transfer coefficients as the boundary condition, temperature of a large LPLi engine piston is analyzed. With varying cooling water temperature, temperature, stress, and thermal expansion of the piston are analyzed and evaluated.

  • This research is presented for optimizing the coefficients of spring and damper by impact load which is applied to a trailer when the containers are loaded up trailer. The procedure utilize the condition that two containers, initial velocity of container, initial height of container and maximum of suspension stroke. The coefficients of spring and damper are calculated numerically through Newmark method uses finite difference expansions. The procedure of calculation is applied by one DOFs of mass-spring-damper system. The coefficients of spring and damper have large value as increase of height or decrease of stroke. The result of calculation is investigated and is used AGV design.

  • Usually the contact between fin collar and tube surface for fin-tube heat exchanger is secured by mechanical expansion of the tubes. The objective of the present study is to develop a method of measuring the thermal contact resistance between fin collar and tube surface for fin-tube heat exchanger. Also an experimental work has been performed to evaluate the thermal contact resistance, and a rigorous numerical analysis has been employed to calculate the contact resistance from the measured data. The experiments have been conducted fur the fin-tube heat exchangers with the tube of outer diameters 7 and 9.52 mm.

  • In this paper, a nonlinear finite-element method was employed to analyze mechanical behaviors of the balloon-expandable stent. Beyond safety considerations, this type of analysis provides mechanical properties that are often difficult to obtain by experiments. Mechanical properties of the stent expansion pressure, radial recoil, longitudinal recoil and foreshortening were studied using commercial FEM code, ANSYS. As a result, the pressure necessary to expand the stent up to a diameter of 3mm was 7.6atm, longitudinal recoil, radial recoil and foreshortening were -0.388%, 2.87% and 4.07% respectively. In conclusion, a finite element model used in this study could help in designing new stents or analyzing actual stents.

  • Since 1980, Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) have performed 8 round robin tests in gauge block measurement in order to evaluate the measurement capability and the state of environment control of National Calibration and Test Institutions. Two sets of five gauge blocks (nominal size : 1, 3, 10, 25, 100 mm) having different thermal expansion coefficients for each set were circulated for the measurement, and the measurement results were collected and analyzed to evaluate the traceability to the standard of KRISS. The method and results of the test are presented.

Two-dimensional Elastic Analysis of Doubly Periodic Circular Holes in Infinite Plane

  • Two-dimensional elastic analysis of doubly periodic circular holes in an infinite plane is given in this paper. Two cases of loading, remote tension and remote shear, are considered. A rectangular cell is cut from the infinite plane. In both cases, the boundary value problem can be reduced to a complex mixed one. It is found that the eigenfunction expansion variational method is efficient to solve the problem. Based on the deformation response under certain loading, the notched medium could be modeled by an orthotropic medium without holes. Elastic properties for the equivalent orthotropic medium are investigated, and the stress concentration along the hole contour is studied. Finally, numerical examples and results are given.

  • Synthesis of silver nanoparticles by the supersonic nozzle expansion method with corona discharge ions was investigated. Corona discharge ions functioned as seeds for heterogeneous nucleation in the silver nanoparticles formation process and provided silver nanoparticles with electronic repulsive force that prevents aggregation of the particles. For ion ejecting, we used sonic-jet corona discharger. Upon application of the corona discharge ions, the mean diameter of the produced particles was decreased from 12.54 to 6.22nm and the standard deviation was decreased from 5.02 to 3.34nm. In addition, the agglomeration of silver nanoparticles was reduced.
