  • In this paper, a new method of statistically evaluating an output response probability distribution of a memory type non-linear system is practically derived based on a zero-memory type non-linear equivalent system. That is, first, the objective system is approximately and functionally separated into two functional parts, i.e., a zero-memory type non-linear part and a memory type linear part according to the well-known Wiener's idea. A whole mathematical frame of the output probability distribution is evaluated in an approximate but generalized form, based on the equivalent zero-memory type non-linear part. The memory effects between the input and the output of the system are reflected in the statistical parameters and the expansion coefficients.

  • The present paper aims at developing a method to accommodate multi-surface concrete plasticity from the point of view of a consistency concept applied to general tangent operators. The idea is based on a Taylor series expansion of the actual effective stress at the stress point corresponding to the previous accumulated true stresses plus the current increment values, initially taken to be elastic. The proposed algorithm can be generalized for any multi-surface criteria combination and has been tested here for typical cement-based materials. A few examples of application are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the multi-surface technique as used to a combination of Rankine and Drucker-Prager yield criteria.

  • The analytic function expansion nodal (AFEN) method has been successfully applied to two-group neutron diffusion problems. In this paper, the AFEN method is extended to solve general multigroup equations for any type of geometries. Also, a suite of new nodal codes based on the extended AFEN theory is developed for hexagonal-z geometry and applied to several benchmark problems. Numerical results obtained attest to their accuracy and applicability to practical problems.

  • This study improved the water repair materials of the polyacrylic system applied to concrete structures by controlling expansion, strengthening water resistance, and improving cohesiveness. The improved polyacrylate repair materials were evaluated against the existing products to verify their performance and level of improvement, and applied on-site to the concrete structures that are leaking the improved water. The verification method measured the presence of water leaks and the moisture content of concrete inside. Moisture levels were measured for two months before and after material installation, and at least 0.8 - 1.7% of humidity was reduced after installing polyacrylic resin, and no leakage was found.

  • This paper proposes an adaptive threshold watershed algorithm, which is the method used for image segmentation and boundary detection, which extends the region on the basis of regional minimum point. First, apply adaptive thresholds to determine regional minimum points. Second, it extends the region by applying adaptive thresholds based on determined regional minimum points. Traditional watershed algorithms create over-segmentation, resulting in the disadvantages of breaking boundaries between regions. These segmentation results mainly from the boundary of the object, creating an inaccurate region. To solve these problems, this paper applies an improved watershed algorithm applied with adaptive threshold in regional minimum point search and region expansion in order to reduce over-segmentation and breaking the boundary of region. This resulted in over-segmentation suppression and the result of having the boundary of precisely divided regions. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can apply adaptive thresholds to reduce the number of segmented regions and see that the segmented boundary parts are correct.

  • A state-space method is developed to investigate the time-dependent behaviors of an angle-ply cylindrical shell in cylindrical bending with surface-bonded piezoelectric layers. Both the interfacial diffusion and sliding are considered to describe the properties of the imperfect interfaces. Particularly, a matrix reduction technique is adopted to establish the transfer relations between the elastic and piezoelectric layers of the laminated shell. Very different from our previous paper, in which an approximate numerical technique, i.e. power series expansion method, is used to deal with the time-dependent problems, the exact solutions are derived in the present analysis based on the piezoelasticity equations without any assumptions. Numerical results are finally obtained and the effects of imperfect interfaces on the electro-mechanical responses of the laminated shell are discussed.

  • Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) operates at high temperatures in range of 600-800℃. Since layers of SOFC are composed of different substances, different thermal expansion in SOFC can result in defects under high temperature conditions. For understanding relation between temperature field and the thermal deformation in SOFC, temperature and strain field were simultaneously estimated using thermographic phosphors by optical measurement. Temperature fields were obtained by the life-time method, and the temperature differences of one specimen was checked with thermocouple. The thermal deformation was estimated by digital image correlation (DIC) method with extracted phosphorescence images. To investigate the deformation accuracy of DIC measurement, thermographic phosphors were coated with and without grid pattern on aluminum surface. Simultaneous measurement of temperature fields and thermal deformation were carried out for YSZ. This study will be helpful to multi-sensing of temperature field and thermal deformation on SOFC cells.

  • We discuss multiple change-point estimation as edge detection in piecewise smooth functions with finitely many jump discontinuities. In this paper we propose change-point estimators using concentration kernels with Fourier coefficients. The change-points can be located via the signal based on Fourier transformation system. This method yields location and amplitude of the change-points with refinement via concentration kernels. We prove that, in an appropriate asymptotic framework, this method provides consistent estimators of change-points with an almost optimal rate. In a simulation study the proposed change-point estimators are compared and discussed. Applications of the proposed methods are provided with Nile flow data and daily won-dollar exchange rate data.

  • A hypothetical core destructive accident (HCDA) has received widespread attention as one of the most serious accidents in sodium-cooled fast reactors. This study combined recent advantages in numerical methods to realize realistic modeling of the complex fluid-structure interactions during HCDAs in a full-scale sodium-cooled fast reactor. The multi-material arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method is used to describe the fluid-structure interactions inside the container. Both the structural deformations and plug rises occurring during HCDAs are evaluated. Two levels of expansion energy are considered with two different reactor models. The simulation results show that the container remains intact during an accident with small deformations. The plug on the top of the container rises to an acceptable level after the sealing between the it and its support is destroyed. The methodology established in this study provides a reliable approach for evaluating the safety feature of a container design.

  • In this paper, a method for constructing of the sequential multiple-valued logic circuits over Galois field GF(px) is proposed. First, we derive the Talyor series over Galois field and the unique matrices which accords with the number of the element over the finite field, and we constdruct sequential multiple-valued logic circuits using these matrices. Computational procedure for traditional polynomial expansion can be reduced by using this method. Also, single and multi-input circuits can be easily implemented.
