  • Excessive acceleration experienced at the top floors in a building during wind storms affect the serviceability of the building with respect to occupant comfort and discomfort. Tuned liquid damper (TLD) and multiple tuned liquid damper (MTLD), which are passive control devices consisting of a rigid tank filled with liquid, are used to suppress vibration of structures. These TLD and MTLD offer several potential advantages-low costs, easy installation in existing structures and effectiveness even for small-amplitude vibrations. This study carries out a theoretical estimation of the most effective damping ratios that can be achieved by TLD and MTLD. Damping by TLD an MTLD reduced the frequency response of high-rise buildings by approximately 40% in urban and suburban areas.

  • The floor slabs of building structures are often subjected to the periodic force which is induced by vibrating machines or human activity(walking, jumping, running etc). These periodic forces cause excessive oscillation. In order to examine the dynamic characteristics of floor slabs, the dynamic characteristics test is accomplished. Generally, the Impact Hammer and Dynamic Exciter test is used to dynamic characteristics test. But the Impact Hammer test is not suitable to apply in building slabs. In this paper, It compared the performance of the Exciter and Impact Hammer test for dynamic characteristics analysis of floor slabs.

  • From the viewpoint of the structural design, the principal problem of the heat exchanger is the potentiality of structural instabilities due to the fluid loading effect during operations. Excessive fluid loading may give rise to permanent deformation of tube and would enentually result in collapse of heat exchanger, which would cause an obstruction of the fluid flow in the narrow channels. In this study, a fluid-structural interaction model was developed to investigate analtically the vibration characteristics of thin rectangular tube used in the heat exchanger. The model consists of two flat plates separated by fluid. The effects of the fluid in the tube was stuided. For analyses, the natural frequency coefficients of the model were investigated for the plate aspect ratios, channel heights, and boundary conditions. As conclusions, the natural frequency coefficients of the tube is found to be affected largely by the fluid loading and the channel heights.

  • Hub bearings not only sustain the body of a cat, but permit wheels to rotate freely. Excessive radial or axial load and many other reasons can cause defects to be created and grown in each component. Therefore, nitration and noise from unwanted defects in outer-race, inner-race or ball elements of a Hub bearing are what we want to detect as early as possible. How early we can detect the faults has to do with how the detection algorithm finds the fault information from measured signal. Fortunately, the bearing signal has Periodic impulse train. This information allows us to find the faults regardless how much noise contaminates the signal. This paper shows the basic signal processing idea and experimental results that demonstrate how good the method is.

  • The dynamic properties of primary-secondary structural systems are examined using analytical expressions for the modal properties. The analysis begins with a Lagrange multiplier formulation to develop a characteristic equation in terms of primary system mobilities and secondary system impedances. The complexity of the characteristic equation by developing new method, frequency window method. It is shown that the reduction of complexity can only be obtained by a reduction of accuracy, but by retaining the dominant effects of the dynamics problem, the loss of accuracy is not excessive. The reduced problem is examined further to develop simple expressions for the modal properties which provide insight into the resonance characteristics of the primary-secondary system problem. The results are useful as a complement to existing computational techniques for understanding and interpreting dynamic analysis results.

  • In the tandom pencil slat saw lines, feeding of cedar blocks is often stopped because excessive motor current is required in a saw machine. These events are called "kickoffs' in factory lines. Kickoffs decrease productivity due to machine down-time and damage to saw blades often accompanies them. Researches on saw behavior at kickoff are required to understand and reduce the frequency and severity of kickoff events. This research aims at understanding the fundamental mechanisms of kickoffs during cutting, predicting the impending kickoff and evolving design improvements for high cutting performance with fewer and less severe kickoffs.offs.

  • High-speed trains with the maximum speed of 300 km/h have started revenue services since April 2004. A large portion of the 'Kyung- Bu' line is comprised of tunnels or bridges, which may cause excessive noise in a vehicle. The vibration generated by the trains propagates into the structure of the tunnel and the vehicle and it can be radiated as noise inside the vehicle interior. This noise can usually be heard as low frequency structure-borne noise. Measurement of the noise and vibration inside the KTX vehicle confirmed that the noise comprises of frequencies below 250 Hz with a couple of broad peaks.

  • The role of suspension system in tracked vehicles cannot be overestimated because the driving and running conditions of such vehicles are very severe. It reduces the vibration and shock which are generated by road profile in running condition. As the tracked vehicle's running speed increases, more undesired vibrations can be generated by road profile particularly in the situation of field running. Because, the excessive vibration can harm the operation ability of crewmen and stability of complex equipments, the maximum running speed is limited. In this study, to improve the performance of the tracked vehicle system, we examined the feasibility of using the active preview control for the tracked vehicle´s suspension system. First, we developed ...

  • Rotating machinery often encounters excessive vibration due to various excitation sources. Among others, the synchronous excitation due to rotating unbalance and initial deformation is acknowledged to be one of the major sources of vibration in rotor-bearing systems. In this paper, a synchronous response analysis method in the presence of the initial deformation is proposed to investigate the peculiar effect of the initial deformation on the response of general flexible rotor-bearing systems with rotational speed dependency and the anisotropy. Experiments are performed and compared with computational results to verify the proposed analysis method. Two numerical examples are also provided to illustrate the characteristics of the synchronous response of general rotor-bearing systems due to the initial deformation.
