  • The container packing problem Is one of the traditional optimization problems, which is very related to the knapsack problem and the bin packing problem. In this paper, we deal with the quadratic multiple container picking problem (QMCPP) and it Is known as a NP-hard problem. Thus, It seems to be natural to use a heuristic approach such as evolutionary algorithms for solving the QMCPP. Until now, only a few researchers have studied on this problem and some evolutionary algorithms have been proposed. This paper introduces a new efficient evolutionary algorithm for the QMCPP. The proposed algorithm is devised by improving the original network random key method, which is employed as an encoding method in evolutionary algorithms. And we also propose local search algorithms and incorporate them with the proposed evolutionary algorithm. Finally we compare the proposed algorithm with the previous algorithms and show the proposed algorithm finds the new best results in most of the benchmark instances.

  • This paper presents a new method that can efficiently solve the integrated problem of line balancing and model sequencing in mixed model assembly lines (MMALs). Line balancing and model sequencing are important for an efficient use of MMALs. The two problems of balancing and sequencing MMALs are tightly related with each other. However, In almost all the existing researches on mixed-model production lines, the two problems have been considered separately. In this research, an endosymbiotic evolutionary a1gorithm, which is a kind of coevolutionary a1gorithm, is adopted as a methodology in order to solve the two problems simultaneously. This paper shows how to apply an endosymbiotic evolutionary a1gorithm to solving the integrated problem. Some evolutionary schemes are used In the a1gorithm to promote population diversity and search efficiency. The proposed a1gorithm is compared with the existing evolutionary algorithms in terms of solution quality and convergence speed. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of our approach.

  • One of the main issues of molecular evolution is to reveal the principles dictating protein evolutionary rates. A traditional hypothesis posits that protein evolutionary rates are mostly determined by the average functional importance of amino acids in a given protein. Thus the correlations of evolutionary rates with different variables such as PPI, gene essentiality and expression abundance have been studied to test the traditional hypothesis. Recently, mRNA expression abundance among the variables has drawn much attention, not only because it shows relatively strong correlation with protein evolutionary rates, but also because of the controversies surrounding an alternative hypothesis against the traditional one. Here, I will give an overview over the traditional hypothesis, and summarize the different variables that have been found to correlate with protein evolutionary rates. Then I will introduce pros and cons on the two different hypotheses.

  • This paper presents an unified method which solves real and reactive power dispatch problems for the economic operation of power systems using evolutionary computation such as genetic algorithms(GA), evolutionary programming(EP), and evolution strategy(ES). Many conventional methods to this problem have been proposed in the past, but most of these approaches have the common defect of being caught to a local minimum solution. The proposed methods, applied to the IEEE 30-bus system, were run for 10 other exogenous parameters and composed of P-optimization module and Q-optimization module. Each simulation result, by which evolutionary computations are compared and analyzed, shows the possibility of applications of evolutionary computation to large scale power systems.

  • The majority of real-world problems encountered by engineers involve simultaneous optimization of competing objectives. In this case instead of single optima, there is a set of alternative trade-offs, generally known as Pareto-optimal solutions. The use of evolutionary algorithms Pareto GA, which was first introduced by Goldberg in 1989, has now become a sort of standard in solving Multiobjective Optimization Problems (MOPs). Though this approach was further developed leading to numerous applications, these applications are based on Pareto ranking and employ the use of the fitness sharing function to maintain diversity. Another scheme for solving MOPs has been presented by J. Nash to solve MOPs originated from Game Theory and Economics. Sefrioui introduced the Nash Genetic Algorithm in 1998. This approach combines genetic algorithms with Nash's idea. Another central achievement of Game Theory is the introduction of an Evolutionary Stable Strategy, introduced by Maynard Smith in 1982. In this paper, we will try to find ESS as a solution of MOPs using our game model based co-evolutionary algorithm. First, we will investigate the validity of our co-evolutionary approach to solve MOPs. That is, we will demonstrate how the evolutionary game can be embodied using co-evolutionary algorithms and also confirm whether it can reach the optimal equilibrium point of a MOP. Second, we will evaluate the effectiveness of our approach, comparing it with other methods through rigorous experiments on several MOPs.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the variables of knowledge, acceptance of theory of evolution and epistemology that could be keys for teaching and learning the theory of evolution within school contexts, and to suggest instructional tips for teaching evolution in relation to the grade levels of education. This cross-sectional study examined the grade level differences (8th, 11th, and preservice teachers) of four variables: evolutionary knowledge; acceptance of theory of evolution; and both domain-specific epistemology (nature of science in relation to evolution) and context-specific epistemology (scientific epistemological views) and their relationships. This study, then, built conceptual models of each grade level students' acceptance of theory of evolution among the factors of evolutionary knowledge and epistemology (both domain-specific and context-specific). The results showed that the scores of evolutionary knowledge, evolution in relation to NOS, and scientific epistemology increased as the grade levels of education go up(p<.05) except the scores of acceptance of theory of evolution(p>.05). In addition, the 8th graders' and the 11th graders' acceptance of evolutionary theory was most explained by 'evolution in relation to NOS', while the preservice teachers' acceptance of evolutionary theory was most explained by evolutionary knowledge. Interestingly, 'scientific epistemological views' were only included for the 8th graders, while evolutionary knowledge and 'evolution in relation to NOS' (context-specific epistemology) were included in explaining all the level of students' acceptance of evolutionary theory. This study implicated that when teaching and learning of the theory of evolution in school contexts, knowledge, acceptance of evolutionary theory and epistemology could be considered appropriately for the different grade levels of students.
