  • The protection facilities against the collision of the vehicle should be considered in the design of the bridge by the regulations, but there is no regulation against the collision of the vehicle in the design of the column of underpass. Impact analysis for the column of underpass was performed in order to evaluate the damage of the structure by the collision of the vehicle. Impact analysis was performed according to the various parameters such as material properties of the structure and types and velocities of the vehicle. From the numerical results, the structural damage for the column of underpass by the collision of the vehicle was evaluated and considerations in the design for a column of underpass against the collision of the vehicle were examined.

  • This paper aims to study the impact of natural disasters on per capita income in Vietnam both the short and long-term, specifically impact loss of income caused by the extreme drought 2013 for agriculture, forestry and fishery in Phu Yen Province, Central Vietnam. The study valued economic damage by applying the synthetic control method (SCM), which is a statistical method to evaluate the effect of an intervention (e.g. natural disasters) in different case studies. It estimates what would have happened to the treatment group if it had not received the treatment by constructing a weighted combination of control units (e.g. control provinces). The results showed that the 2013 drought caused a decrease in income per capita, mainly in the agriculture, forestry, and fishery sector in Phu Yen. The reduced income was estimated to be VND 160,000 (1 USD = 23,500 VND (2021)) for one person per month, accounting for 11% of total income per capita and continued to affect the income 6 years later. Therefore, authorities need to invest in preventive solutions such as early and accurate warnings to help people to be more proactive in disaster prevention.

  • In this study, a methodology for evaluating impact strength in rollable devices was developed, focusing on measuring impact strength and evaluating rolling and unrolling durability simultaneously, with findings reported from tests on a real demonstration unit. The study utilized a flexible and rollable polyimide (PI) substrate for the evaluations. The chosen parameters for this methodology were a flat-type impactor, weights of 300 g, 500 g, and 1000 g, a rolling shaft ranging from 30 R to 5 R, and the positioning of the impactor. The results revealed that the difference in defect rates when comparing the 300 g and 500 g weights was minimal. However, the adoption of a 1000 g weight markedly increased the defect count due to damage to the PI film's surface. Furthermore, an uptick in rolling and unrolling cycles led to more pronounced surface scratches on the PI film. These methods and findings are poised to make a substantial contribution towards refining reliability testing for a wide array of rollable device applications, including smartphones, watches, pads, and wearable technology.

  • The needs of walking assistive device such as the Ankle Foot Orthosis (A.F.O.) are getting greater than before. However, most of the A.F.O. are generally imported rather than domestic manufacturing. The major reason of high import reliability is the rack of impact properties of domestic commercial products. Therefore, this research is going to focus on the evaluation of impact properties of the A.F.O. which has the high import reliability. Unfortunately, these kinds of researches are not performed sufficiently. This research is going to evaluate impact energy behavior in composite materials such as the glass/epoxy (S-glass, $[0/90]_{2S}$) and the aramid/epoxy (Kevlar-29, woven type, 8 ply) of ankle foot orthosis. The approach methods were as follows. 1) The history of impact load and impact energy due to the various velocities. 2) Relationship between the deflection and damage shape according to the impact velocities. 3) The behavior of absorbed energy and residual strength rate due to the various impact velocities.

  • Based on combined continuum-fracture mechanics, fracture criterion was utilized to predict impact performance of advanced high-strength steel sheets: 340R and TWIP940. The macro-crack propagation behavior at high stress triaxiality was characterized by V-notch tests while deformation behavior at high strain rate was characterized by simple tension tests with various cross head speeds. The characterized mechanical properties were incorporated into the FE program ABAQUS/Explicit to simulate the charpy impact tests, which showed good agreement with experiments.

  • TFT-LCD(Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display) module is representative commercial product of FPD(Flat Panel Display). Thickness of TFT-LCD module is very thin. It is adopted for major display unit for IT devices such as Cellular Phone, Camcorder, Digital camera and etc. Due to the harsh user environment of mobile IT devices, it requires complicated structure and tight assembly. And user requirements for the mechanical functionalities of TFT-LCD module become more strict. However, TFT-LCD module is normally weak to high level transient mechanical shock. Since it uses thin crystallized panel. Therefore, anti-shock performance is classified as one of the most important design specifications. Traditionally, the product reliability against mechanical shock is confirmed by empirical method in the design-prototype-drop/impact testredesign paradigm. The method is time-consuming and expensive process. It lacks scientific insight and quantitative evaluation. In this article, a systematic design evaluation of TFT-LCD module for mobile IT devices is presented with combinations of FEA and testing to support the optimal shock proof display design procedure.

  • Resisting an accidental impact of large commercial aircrafts is an important aspect of advanced nuclear power plant (NPP) design. Especially after the 9·11 event, some regulations were enacted, which required the design of NPPs should consider the accidental impact of large commercial aircrafts. Normal working of equipment is important for stopping reactor under an impact when an NPP is in operation. However, there is a lack of reliable analysis and research on the impact test of nuclear prototype equipment. Therefore, in order to study the response of the equipment under high acceleration impact, a centrifugal pump is selected as the research object to perform the impact test. A horizontal half-sinusoidal pulse wave was applied to the working pump. The test results show that the horizontal response of the motor and flange is greater compared to other parts, as well as the vertical response of the coupling. The stress response of the pump body support and motor support is high, hence these parts should be considered in the design of the pump. Finally, combined with the damage and stress evaluation results of the pump under different amplitudes, the ultimate impact acceleration that the pump can withstand is given.

  • Development of a small scale aircraft has been carried out for the BASA(Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement) program in Korea. This aircraft adopted all the composite structures for environmental friendly by low fuel consumption due to its lightness behavior. However the composite structure has s disadvantage which is very weak against impact due to foreign object damages. Therefore the aim of this study is focusing on the damage evaluation and repair techniques of the aircraft composite structure. The damages of composite laminates including the carbon/epoxy UD laminate and the carbon/epoxy fabric face sheets-honeycomb core sandwich laminate were simulated by a drop weight type impact test equipment and the damaged specimen were repaired using the external patch repair method after removing damaged area. The compressive strength test and analysis results after repairing the impact damaged specimens were compared with the compressive strength test and analysis results of undamaged specimens and impact damaged specimens. Finally, the strength recovery capability by repairing were investigated.

  • In this study, damage evaluation of glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites was investigated with acoustic emission method. Specimens of 1.7mm thickness laminate were made from PET and 7 layers o171ass fabrics. Notch and impact loading were added to the specimen and normal tensile test and tensile test with the dead load were carried out. AE signal was measured as the functions of notch ratio to the width0 and impact energy in order to find out the correlation between fracture mode and AE parameters. The result has shown that low amplitude of AE signal was due to the microcrack of matrix and its growth, whereas the amplitude in the mid range was the response to the delamination and interfacial separation. In the range of high amplitude above 90dB. the fracture of glass fabric was found. Tensile strength decreased with increasing notch ratio to the width and impact energy because of tile effect or delamination, the cracking of matrix and stress concentration. In proportion to the size of damaged area. AE signal showed its wider range of frequency and energy as well as increased number of hits.
