  • As a step toward accurate prediction of droplet impingement and ice accretion on aircraft, an Eulerian-based droplet impingement and ice accretion code for air flows around an airfoil containing water droplets is developed. A CFD solver based on the finite volume method was also developed to solve the clean airflow. The finite-volume-based approach for simulating droplet impingement on an airfoil was employed owing to its compatibility with the CFD solver and robustness. For ice accretion module, a simple model based on the control volume is combined with the droplet impingement module that provides the collection efficiency. To validate the present code, it is compared with NASA Glenn IRT (Icing Research Tunnel) experimental data and other well-known icing codes such as LEWICE and FENSAP-ICE. It is shown that the collection efficiency and shape of ice accretion are in good agreement with previous experimental and simulation results.

  • A three-dimensional (3D) unstructured hydrodynamic solver for transient two-phase flows has been developed. A two-fluid three-field model was adopted for the two-phase flows. The three fields represent a continuous liquid, an entrained liquid, and a vapour field. The hydrodynamic solver is for the 3D component of a nuclear system code and the component-scale analysis tools for transient two-phase flows. The finite volume method and unstructured grid are adopted, which are useful for the flows in a complicated geometry. The semi-implicit ICE (Implicit Continuous-fluid Eulerian) numerical scheme has been adapted to the unstructured non-staggered grid. This paper presents the numerical method and the preliminary results of the calculations. The results show that the numerical scheme is robust and predicts the phase change and the flow transitions due to boiling and flashing problems well.

  • Ice accretion on aircraft surface can greatly impair the aerodynamic performance of aircraft. As an alternative to the traditional Lagrangian particle tracking approach, an Eulerian-based droplet impingement and ice accretion code for air flows containing water droplets was developed A CFD solver was also developed to solve the clean airflow. The results of present method were compared with experimental data and previous icing codes such as LEWICE and FENSAP-ICE and were confirmed to show good agreement each other in qualitative and quantitative ways.

  • Two-phase compressible flow fields of air-water are investigated numerically in the fixed Eulerian grid framework. The phase interface is captured via volume fractions of each phase. A way to model two phase compressible flows as a single phase one is found based on an equivalent equation of states of Tait's type for a multiphase cell. The equivalent single phase field is discretized using the Roe‘s approximate Riemann solver. Two approaches are tried to suppress the pressure oscillation phenomena at the phase interface, a passive advection of volume fraction and a direct pressure relaxation with the compressible form of volume fraction equation. The direct pressure equalizing method suppresses pressure oscillation successfully and generates sharp discontinuities, transmitting and reflecting acoustic waves naturally at the phase interface. In discretizing the compressible form of volume fraction equation, phase interfaces are geometrically reconstructed to minimize the numerical diffusion of volume fraction and relevant variables. The motion of a projectile in a water-filled tube which is fired by the release of highly pressurized air is simulated presuming the flow field as a two dimensional one, and several design factors affecting the projectile movement are investigated.

  • The present study is focused on the development of the RIF (Representative Interactive Flamelet) model which can overcome the shortcomings of conventional approach based on the steady flamelet library. Due to the ability for interactively describing the transient behaviors of local flame structures with CFD solver, the RIF model can effectively account for the detailed mechanisms of $NO_x$ formation including thermal NO path, prompt and nitrous $NO_x$ formation, and reburning process by hydrocarbon radical without any ad-hoc procedure. The flamelet time of RIFs within a stationary turbulent flame may be thought to be Lagrangian flight time. In context with the RIF approach, this study adopts the Eulerian Particle Flamelet Model (EPFM) with mutiple flamelets which can realistically account for the spatial inhomogeneity of scalar dissipation rate. In order to systematically evaluate the capability of Eulerian particle flamelet model to predict the precise flame structure and NO formation in the multi-dimensional elliptic flames, two methanol bluffbody flames with two different injection velocities are chosen as the validation cases. Numerical results suggest that the present EPFM model has the predicative capability to realistically capture the essential features of flame structure and $NO_x$ formation in the bluff-body stabilized flames.

  • The injection nozzle of an electro-hydraulic injector is being opened and closed by movement of a injector's needle which is balanced by pressure at the nozzle seat and at the needle control chamber, at the opposite end of the needle. In this study, the effects of needle movement in a piezo-driven injector on unsteady cavitating flows behavior inside nozzle were investigated by cavitation numerical model based on the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. Aimed at simulating the 3-D two-phase flow behavior, the three dimensional geometry model along the central cross-section regarding of one injection hole with real design data of a piezo-driven diesel injector has been used to simulate the cavitating flows for injection time by at fully transient simulation with cavitation model. The cavitation model incorporates many of the fundamental physical processes assumed to take place in cavitating flows. The simulations performed were both fully transient and 'pseudo' steady state, even if under steady state boundary conditions. As this research results, we found that it could analyze the effect the pressure drop to the sudden acceleration of fuel, which is due to the fastest response of needle, on the degree of cavitation existed in piezo-driven injector nozzle.

  • This paper summarizes the components of an explicit aeroelastic solver developed especially for the simulation of dynamic fracture events occurring during the flight of solid propellant rockets. The numerical method combines an explicit Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) version of the Cohesive Volumetric Finite Element (CVFE) scheme, used to simulate the spontaneous motion of one or more cracks propagating dynamically through a domain with regressing boundaries, and an explicit unstructured finite volume Euler code to follow the flow field during the failure event. A key feature of the algorithm is the ability to adaptively repair and expand the fluid mesh to handle the large geometrical changes associated with grain deformation and crack motion.
