Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the impacts of end-of-life care competency and ethical dilemmas on psychological burnout in nurses who care for terminal cancer patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 160 nurses who cared for terminal cancer patients was conducted. The participants were recruited from the hospice-palliative care wards, hematology or oncology wards, or intensive care units of three general hospitals in a single metropolitan area. Data were collected using a self-administered survey to assess end-oflife care competency, ethical dilemmas, psychological burnout, and general sociodemographic characteristics. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the independent ttest, analysis of variance, Pearson correlation coefficients, and hierarchical linear regression analysis using SPSS for Windows (version 26.0). Results: Psychological burnout was significantly correlated with end-of-life care competency (r=-0.23, P=0.003) but not with ethical dilemmas. The results of the hierarchical linear regression analysis indicated that endof-life care competency (β=-0.280, P=0.010) and ethical dilemmas (β=0.275, P=0.037) were significant predictors of psychological burnout, after adjusting for age, religious status, clinical experience, and unit type. Conclusion: The current study's findings demonstrate that end-of-life care competency and ethical dilemmas are crucial factors that affect psychological burnout in nurses who care for terminal cancer patients. Substantive education programs must be developed to improve nurses' competencies in end-of-life care and ethical dilemmas to decrease psychological burnout.

Results: Regarding the ethics type, absolutists accounted for 36.1%, relativists for 33.8%, subjective for 16.5%, and exceptionalists for 13.5% of the respondents. Dental hygiene professional intuition scored 3.53 points, and ethical competence scored 3.52 points. The points for professional intuition and ethical competence according to the type of ethics were 3.64 and 3.61 for the absolutist, 3.55 and 3.53 for the relativist, 3.47 and 3.53 for the exceptionalist, and 3.27 and 3.37 for the subjective, respectively. The propensity of idealism showed a positive correlation with dental hygiene professional intuition and ethical competence (p<0.001). The tendency of relativism correlated with ethical competence, and ethical competence correlated with dental hygiene professional intuition (p<0.05). Conclusions: The implication of this study is that students majoring in dental hygiene must have clear and high dental hygiene professional intuition and ethical competence in order to demonstrate their potential positively. Therefore, ethics education and proper decision-making training must be included in the dental hygiene curriculum.

Ethical sensitivity is a basic competency required for nursing students to work as professionals who will care patients in the clinical field after graduation. Therefore, efforts are needed to improve the knowledge on ethical sensitivity in undergraduate education. This study aimed to identify the demographic characteristics that influence ethical sensitivity among nursing students. This study was a secondary analysis that referred to a previous work measuring ethical sensitivity in nursing students. The participants were 128 nursing students, who had experienced clinical practicums. Among the participants, those who were third-year (t=2.345, 95% CI=[1.24, 14.64], p=0.021), female (t=2.635, 95% CI=[3.65, 25.69], p=0.009) and were satisfaction with major (t=-2.389, 95% CI=[-16.54, -1.50], p=0.019) consistently reported significantly higher mean scores on ethical sensitivity. The explanatory power of the model was 13.3%. Gender (Exp (B)=0.875, 95% CI=[0.804, 0.952], p=0.002) and year at universtiy were the strongest predictors of ethical sensitivity (Exp (B)=0.921, 95% CI=[0.873, 0.971], p=0.002). Based on the results, an appropriate ethics education that considers the following issues should be provided for undergraduate nursing students: both genders' perspectives, seniors' further development, and students experiencing low satisfaction with their major. Future nursing education should consider these individual demographic characteristics to develop nursing students' ethical sensitivity that will further affect their ethical behavior and ultimately improve the quality of nursing.
