Effect of sequential earthquakes on evaluation of non-linear response of 3D RC MRFs

  • Most of the existing seismic codes for RC buildings consider only a scenario earthquake for analysis, often characterized by the response spectrum at the specified location. However, any real earthquake event often involves occurrences of multiple earthquakes within a few hours or days, possessing similar or even higher energy than the first earthquake. This critically impairs the rehabilitation measures thereby resulting in the accumulation of structural damages for subsequent earthquakes after the first earthquake. Also, the existing seismic provisions account for the non-linear response of an RC building frame implicitly by specifying a constant response modification factor (R) in a linear elastic design. However, the 'R' specified does not address the changes in structural configurations of RC moment-resisting frames (RC MRFs) viz., building height, number of bays present, bay width, irregularities arising out of mass and stiffness changes, etc. resulting in changed dynamic characteristics of the structural system. Hence, there is an imperative need to assess the seismic performance under sequential earthquake ground motions, considering the adequacy of code-specified 'R' in the representation of dynamic characteristics of RC buildings. Therefore, the present research is focused on the evaluation of the non-linear response of medium-rise 3D RC MRFs with and without vertical irregularities under bi-directional sequential earthquake ground motions using non-linear dynamic analysis. It is evident from the results that collapse probability increases, and 'R' reduces significantly for various RC MRFs subjected to sequential earthquakes, pronouncing the vulnerability and inadequacy of estimation of design base shear by code-specified 'R' under sequential earthquakes.

  • This paper is a feasibility study on the calculation of operating cost in regards to the overall operation following the completion of a number of LRT lines currently in progress. Owing to the absence of operating experience in driveless LRT system at home, the difficulties lie in the assumption of the optimal operating budget applying domestic real situation. Nevertheless, with 34 years of accumulated operating experience in heavy rail transit system, Seoul Metro, the nation's biggest urban rail transit operator, performs O&M consultancy services for several on-going projects along with every effort to acquire know-how where the appropriateness of the cost estimation as a required deliverable is reviewed and a more efficient way is provided. The main focus of this study is to seek a method to calculate the optimal amount of operating expenses as well as a cost-effective alternative for possible weaknesses from the standpoint of the operator. The body of this paper discusses the five issues such as personnel cost, overhead, maintenance cost, additional purchase price, alternative investment fee from a more macroscopic point of view, and the conclusion deals with the adequacy of the reason for selection of institutions with various operating know-how.

Assessment of load carrying capacity and fatigue life expectancy of a monumental Masonry Arch Bridge by field load testing: a case study of veresk

  • Masonry arch bridges present a large segment of Iranian railway bridge stock. The ever increasing trend in traffic requires constant health monitoring of such structures to determine their load carrying capacity and life expectancy. In this respect, the performance of one of the oldest masonry arch bridges of Iranian railway network is assessed through field tests. Having a total of 11 sensors mounted on the bridge, dynamic tests are carried out on the bridge to study the response of bridge to test train, which is consist of two 6-axle locomotives and two 4-axle freight wagons. Finite element model of the bridge is developed and calibrated by comparing experimental and analytical mid-span deflection, and verified by comparing experimental and analytical natural frequencies. Analytical model is then used to assess the possibility of increasing the allowable axle load of the bridge to 25 tons. Fatigue life expectancy of the bridge is also assessed in permissible limit state. Results of F.E. model suggest an adequacy factor of 3.57 for an axle load of 25 tons. Remaining fatigue life of Veresk is also calculated and shown that a 0.2% decrease will be experienced, if the axle load is increased from 20 tons to 25 tons.

Determinants of Retail Banking Efficiency: A Case of Vietcombank Branches in the Mekong-Delta Region

  • This study focused on researching the factors affecting retail banking efficiency of Vietcombank branches in the Mekong-Delta region. By collecting data from financial statements from 15 branches of VCB in the Mekong-Delta Region between 2015 and 2018, the paper applies DEA estimation to measure the effectiveness of retail banking activities and uses the Tobit regression model to identify factors affecting retail banking efficiency. The results demonstrate that the retail banking efficiency of branches averaged 52.5% during the period. The rating result shows the branches in An Giang, Can Tho, Dong Thap, Kien Giang, Long An, Phu Quoc and Tra Noc rank at the top technical efficiency. In group of medium efficiency, there are branches in Soc Trang, Tien Giang and Vinh Long. In the category of the poor efficiency are the branches in Bac Lieu, Ben Tre, Ca Mau, Chau Doc and Tra Vinh. The results also show that bank scale-related factors, capital adequacy, credit quality, time specific and region impact significantly the retail banking efficiency. The research not, only contributes to enriching the empirical research method but also is significant for the management activities in business developing strategies, improving the operational efficiency of Vietcombank in the region.

경부선 틸팅열차의 가능 운전시간 추정 연구 (A Study on the Possible Running Time Estimation of Tilting Train on the Gyeongbu line)

  • A rising attention is paid to the railway system in many countries. KOREA is also of the opinion that the railway has to play a more important role in the near future to face up to the problems that increase gradually in the transport sector. To attract more traffic to the rail networks, it is important for rail modes to have running time competitiveness. Tilting trains, where it is possible to tilt the car-body towards the center of the curve, are a less expensive alternative to shorten travelling times on existing lines. Running time for tilting train is one of the most important factors, with which passenger demand forecasting or economic feasibility analysis will be done. This paper evaluates the speed limitation of tilting train around curves and also presents calculation process of its simulated possible running time. Then the adequacy of estimated time is verified with running time for Korean protype tilting train TTX (Tilting Train eXpress) by actual test run. As a case study, the estimated running time for the production version of tilting train and its time saving are presented compared with 2012's conventional Saemaul trains and non-tilting trains on the Gyeongbu line in the Korean rail network.

Negative Exponential Disparity Based Deviance and Goodness-of-fit Tests for Continuous Models: Distributions, Efficiency and Robustness

  • The minimum negative exponential disparity estimator(MNEDE), introduced by Lindsay(1994), is an excellenet competitor to the minimum Hellinger distance estimator(Beran 1977) as a robust and yet efficient alternative to the maximum likelihood estimator in parametric models. In this paper we define the negative exponential deviance test(NEDT) as an analog of the likelihood ratio test(LRT), and show that the NEDT is asymptotically equivalent to he LRT at the model and under a sequence of contiguous alternatives. We establish that the asymptotic strong breakdown point for a class of minimum disparity estimators, containing the MNEDE, is at least 1/2 in continuous models. This result leads us to anticipate robustness of the NEDT under data contamination, and we demonstrate it empirically. In fact, in the simulation settings considered here the empirical level of the NEDT show more stability than the Hellinger deviance test(Simpson 1989). The NEDT is illustrated through an example data set. We also define a goodness-of-fit statistic to assess adequacy of a specified parametric model, and establish its asymptotic normality under the null hypothesis.

3-D 기법을 이용한 TCS기반 전국 교통수요 추정 연구 (3-Dimensional Balancing Technique for Nationwide Travel Demand Model using Toll Collecting System Data)

  • 본 연구는 교통수요 추정에 관련된 사회경제적 통계자료와 여러 기관에서 발표된 Data를 바탕으로 TCS OD의 통행특성을 반영한 전국 교통수요를 추정하였다. 추정된 교통수요의 신뢰성을 검증하기 위해 전국을 8개권역으로 구분하여 권역별로 통행량을 비교하였으며, 통계적인 오차분석 기법을 이용하여 관측교통량과 배정교통량의 차이를 비교하였다. 그리고 추정된 교통수요의 통행시간분포(TLFD)와 주요도시간 통행소요시간을 분석하여 2-D와 3-D기법으로 추정된 교통수요의 신뢰성을 검증하였다. 신뢰성분석 및 검증결과 본 연구에서의 상황하에서는 3-D기법이 2-D기법보다는 TCS OD의 통행특성 및 패턴을 잘 반영하는 것으로 분석되었지만, 3-D기법이 전적으로 우수하다라고 단언할 수는 없을 것 같다.

  • 바젤 위원회는 시장위험의 측정 도구로 Value-at-Risk(VaR)와 expected shortfall(ES)을 사용할 것을 제안하였다. 여러 문헌에서 VaR와 ES의 다양한 추정 방법들이 연구 되었다. 본 연구에서는 준모수적인 방법인 conditional autoregressive value at risk(CAViaR), conditional autoregressive expectile(CARE) 방법들, 그리고 Gaussian 준최대가능도 추정량(QMLE)를 이용한 방법을 사후 검정을 통해서 비교하고자 한다. 각 방법의 타당성을 확인하기 위해서, VaR에 대한 사후 검정은 unconditional coverage(UC)와 conditional coverage(CC) 검정을 사용하고 ES에 대한 검정은 붓스트랩 방법을 사용한다. S&P500 지수와 현대 자동차 주식가격 지수에 대하여 실증 자료 분석이 수행되었다.

뇌파검사 자료를 기반으로 한 과학영재 판별 지수(G-Index) 개발과 적용 (New index for the gifted students(G-Index) with EEG analysis)

  • 과학영재 판별의 대안적 도구로서의 가능성을 찾아보기 위하여 영재 집단과 일반 집단의 뇌파검사를 실시하였다. 뇌파의 주성분 공간분석법인 PCA분석 자료의 집단별 차이점을 이용하여 과학영재 판별지수(Gifted Index: G-Index)를 개발하고 과학영재 판별의 가능성을 탐색하여 보았더니 76% 수준에서의 판별 효과를 얻을 수 있었다. 또 과학영재 판별이 가능한 기타 판별도구 성취도들 간의 상관관계를 바탕으로 하여 회귀분석을 시도한 결과는로 나타났다. 이를 근거로 한 영재 판별 확률식을 제안하면 $$P=\frac 1{1+e^{-[-0.018(TTCT)+0.057(IQ)+1.916(FASP)+0.682(V.T)+0.088(Exp.)+0.034(G-Index)-57.510]}}$$와 같고 이 회귀분석식을 적용한 결과 영재 집단 내에서의 판별 가능성이 95% 수준에서 매우 우수하였다. 따라서 과학영재 판별의 대안적 도구로서의 뇌파검사와 G-Index의 유용성을 확인할 수 있었다.

인공지능 모델에 의한 지하수위 모의결과의 적절성 판단을 위한 허용가능한 예측오차 범위의 추정 (Estimation of the allowable range of prediction errors to determine the adequacy of groundwater level simulation results by an artificial intelligence model)

  • 지하수는 지표수와 함께 용수로 사용가능한 중요한 수자원이며 특히 섬 지역의 경우 전체 수자원 중 지하수의 이용 비율이 상대적으로 높기 때문에 안정적인 이용을 위해 지하수위 변동성에 대한 연구는 필수적이다. 지하수위 변동성의 예측 및 분석을 위해 인공지능 모델을 활용한 연구들이 지속적으로 증가하고 있으나 지하수위 예측결과의 적절성을 판단할 수 있는 평가기준을 제시한 연구는 충분하지 않다. 본 연구에서는 허용가능한 지하수위 예측오차의 범위를 제시하기 위해 과거 20년 동안 전 세계 다양한 지역을 대상으로 인공지능 모델을 활용하여 지하수위를 예측한 연구결과들을 종합적으로 분석하였다. 그 결과 관측지하수위의 변동성이 커질수록 인공지능 모델에 의한 지하수위 예측오차는 증가하였다. 따라서 관측지하수위 최대변동폭과 예측오차 간의 상관성과 기존 연구들에서 제시한 평가지수들을 고려하여 평가기준을 산정하였으며, 인공지능 모델에 의한 지하수위 예측결과의 적절한 평가기준은 도출된 선형회귀식에 의한 평균제곱근오차 또는 최대오차 이하이거나, NSE ≥ 0.849 또는 R2 ≥ 0.880 이다. 이 허용가능한 오차범위는 인공지능 모델을 활용한 지하수위 예측결과의 적절성 판단을 위한 참고자료로 사용할 수 있다.
