  • As advanced earthquake analysis/design methods such as the nonlinear static analysis are developed, it is required to estimate precisely the cyclic behavior of reinforced concrete members that is characterized by strength, deformability, and capacity of energy dissipation. However, currently, estimation of energy dissipation depends on empirical equations that are not sufficiently accurate, or experiment and sophisticated numerical analysis which are difficult to use in practice. In the present study, nonlinear finite element analysis was performed to investigate the behavioral characteristics of flexure-dominant RC members under cyclic load. The effects of axial force, arrangement of reinforcing bars, and reinforcement ratio on the cyclic behavior were studied. Based on the investigation, a simplified method to estimate the capacity of energy dissipation was proposed, and it was verified by the comparison with the finite element analyses and experiments. The proposed method can estimate the energy dissipation of RC members more precisely than currently used empirical equations, and it is easily applicable in practice.

  • This paper deals with the method to estimate the friction in a system. We study a nonlinear friction model to estimate the friction in an inverted pendulum and approximate the friction model using fuzzy basis functions expansion. To demonstrate the friction observer using FBFs, we derive a update rule based on the error term that is formed by the output from a real system and observer output with a friction estimate. And two compensation algorithms to improve the response of an inverted pendulum are proposed. The first method that a observer parameter is updated in on-line and the friction is compensated at the same time. The second method is to compensate the friction with observer parameter estimated priori. The two methods is compared through the experimental results.

  • Demand estimates in electric power systems have traditionally consisted of time-series analyses over long time periods. The resulting database consisted of huge amounts of data that were then analyzed to create the various coefficients used to forecast power demand. In this research, we take advantage of universally used analysis techniques analysis, but we also use easily available data-mining techniques to analyze patterns of days and special days(holidays, etc.). We then present a new method for estimating and forecasting power flow using decision tree analysis. And because analyzing the relationship between the estimate and power system ceiling Trices currently set by the Korea Power Exchange. We included power system ceiling prices in our estimate coefficients and estimate method.

  • The aim of the work is to present a new method of estimating the existence of a mass unbalance and mass unbalance under a crack on a rotating shaft. This is an advanced new method for the detection of a mass unbalance and a new way to estimate the position of it under crack influence. As the first step, the shaft is physically modelled with a finite element method and the dynamic mathematical model is derived by using the Hamilton principle; thus, the system is represented by various subsystems. The equation of motion of the shaft with a mass unbalance and a crack are established by adapting the local mass unbalance and the stiffness change. this is a reference system for the given system. Based on a model for transient behavior induced from vabrations measured at the bearings, an elementary Estimator is designed to detect mass unblance on the shaft. Using the Estimator, a bank of the Estimator is established to estimate the estimate the position of the mass unbalance and arranged at a certain location on the shaft. The informations for the given system are the measurements of bearing displacements and velocity.

  • This paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) head pose estimation algorithm using the stereo image. Given a pair of stereo image, we automatically extract several important facial feature points using the disparity map, the gabor filter and the canny edge detector. To detect the facial feature region , we propose a region dividing method using the disparity map. On the indoor head & shoulder stereo image, a face region has a larger disparity than a background. So we separate a face region from a background by a divergence of disparity. To estimate 3D head pose, we propose a 2D-3D Error Compensated-SVD (EC-SVD) algorithm. We estimate the 3D coordinates of the facial features using the correspondence of a stereo image. We can estimate the head pose of an input image using Error Compensated-SVD (EC-SVD) method. Experimental results show that the proposed method is capable of estimating pose accurately.

  • There are many methods to describe the importance of a node, centrality, in a graph. In this paper, we focus on the eigenvector centrality. In this paper, an analytical method to estimate the difference of centrality with an additional edge in a graph is proposed. In order to validate the analytical method to estimate the centrality, two problems, to decide an additional edge that maximizes the difference of all centralities of all nodes in the graph and to decide an additional edge that maximizes the centrality of a specific node, are solved using three kinds of random graphs and the results of the estimated edge and observed edge are compared. Though the estimated centrality difference is slightly different from the observed real centrality in some cases, it is shown that the proposed method is effective to estimate the centrality difference with a short running time.

  • Panel data sets have been developed in various areas, and many recent studies have analyzed panel, or longitudinal data sets. Maximum likelihood (ML) may be the most common statistical method for analyzing panel data models; however, the inference based on the ML estimate will have an inflated Type I error because the ML method tends to give a downwardly biased estimate of variance components when the sample size is small. The under estimation could be severe when data is incomplete. This paper proposes the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) method for a random effects panel data model with a censored dependent variable. Note that the likelihood function of the model is complex in that it includes a multidimensional integral. Many authors proposed to use integral approximation methods for the computation of likelihood function; however, it is well known that integral approximation methods are inadequate for high dimensional integrals in practice. This paper introduces to use the moments of truncated multivariate normal random vector for the calculation of multidimensional integral. In addition, a proper asymptotic standard error of REML estimate is given.

  • Accurate initial cost estimates are essential to effective management of construction projects where many decisions are made in the course of project management by referencing the estimates. In practice, the initial estimates are frequently derived from historical actual cost data, for which standard distribution-based techniques are widely applied in the construction industry to account for risk associated with the estimates. This approach assumes the same probability distribution of estimate errors for any selected estimates. This assumption, however, is not always satisfied. In order to account for the probabilistic nature of estimate errors, an alternative method for measuring the risk associated with a selected initial estimate is developed by applying the Bayesian probability approach. An application example include demonstrates how the method is implemented. A hypothesis test is conducted to reveal the robustness of the Bayesian probability model. The method is envisioned to effectively complement cost estimating methods that are currently in use by providing benefits as follows: (1) it effectively accounts for the probabilistic nature of errors in estimates; (2) it is easy to implement by using historical estimates and actual costs that are readily available in most construction companies; and (3) it minimizes subjective judgment by using quantitative data only.

  • In recent years, the probabilistic analysis has been used in rock slope engineering. This is because uncertainty is pervasive in rock slope engineering and most geometric and geotechnical parameters of discontinuity and rock masses are involved with uncertainty. Whilst the traditional deterministic analysis method fails to properly deal with uncertainty, the probabilistic analysis has advantages quantifying the uncertainty in parameters. As a probabilistic analysis method, the Monte Carlo simulation has been used commonly. However, the Monte Carlo simulation requires many repeated calculations and therefore, needs much effort and time to calculate the probability of failure. In contrast, the point estimate method involves a simple calculation with moments for random variables. In this study the probability of failure in rock slope is evaluated by the point estimate method and the results are compared to the probability of failure obtained by Monte Carlo simulation method.

  • Restructuring of electricity industry is going on for the purpose of introducing competition and after separation of generation and retail business and introduction of competition, substantial change is expected in overall electric power system. In other words, DSM projects are divided with public projects and private projects. Particularly for public project, it is essential to evaluate the DSM volumes by program. This paper tries to derive the ways for achieving the necessary DSM goal in the electricity industry in Korea. First of all, by analyzing the load in Korea, we forecast the standard demand and estimate the technological potentials of each program in considering DSM technological indicators. Moreover, by using economic analysis by program, we estimate economic potentials and finally, we estimate the potentials by program in considering the DSM policy. We estimate the potentials by using random method because application methodology and procedures by program are not established until now, which leads to not obtaining transparency for implementation effect by program. Therefore, this paper estimates the future potentials of DSM projects by using the logical and systematic analytic method and establishing database for DSM basic indicator. The DSM goals estimated by this method will be reflected to mid/long term nation-wide resource planning, which will mitigate anticipated power supply shortage and be applied to derive desirable energy demand/supply structure.
