  • In this paper, we propose a self-tuning PID controller for unknown systems with time-varying delay. Using pole placement equations, we derive the controller that can be extended to the multi-step time delay case. The time-varying delays are estimated by a prediction error delay method using multiple predictors. Since the order of the estimation vector is not increased, the persistant exciting condition of control input is alleviated. Since the least square method gives biased parameter estimates for colored noise cases, the recursive instrumental variable method is used to estimate system parameters. The computational burden of the proposed method is less than the conventional adaptive methods. Computer simulations are performed to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

  • This paper represents the study of an effective self-tuning PID control for a robot manipulator to track a reference trajectory in spite of the presence of nonlinearities and parameters uncertainties in robot dynamic models. In this control scheme, an error model of the manipulator is established, for the first time, by difference between joint reference trajectory and tracked trajectory. It's model Parameters are estimated by the recursive least-square identification algorithm, and classical controller parameters are determined by pole placement method. A computer simulation study was conducted to demonstrate performance of the proposed self-tuning PID control in joint-based coordinates for a robot with payload.

  • Recently, optical disk drives are increasingly demanded to have higher speed as well as high information density, especially for applications like CD-ROM drives. To this end, improvement of their optical pick-up structure and control is recognized the very challenging issue. In this paper, the 2-D motion of the pick-up is first analytically modelled to identify the cause and effect of the troublesome cross coupling between auto-focusing and tracking directions. Subsequently, the overall system equations are derived to include the dynamics of the related components in the auto-focusing servo system. While its unmeasurable parameters being estimated by the least square error method, a simple but decent linear model can be obtained within its operating frequency range. To design the high speed and robust positional servo controller, the design specifications are detailed and H$\sub$.inf./ control method is employed based on the simple model. Using the pickup in a commercial 8 fold speed CD-ROM drive as an example, performance of the designed controller is verified by realtime experiments.

  • This paper presents a direct generalized minimum-variance self tuning controller with a PID structure using neural network which adapts to the changing parameters of the nonlinear system with nonminimum phase behavior, noises and time delays. The self-tuning controller with a PID structure is a combination of the simple structure of a PID controller and the characteristics of a self-tuning controller that can adapt to changes in the environment. The self-tuning control effect is achieved through the RLS (recursive least square) algorithm at the parameter estimation stage as well as through the Robbins-Monro algorithm at the stage of optimizing the design parameter of the controller. The neural network control effect which compensates for nonlinear factor is obtained from the learning algorithm which the learning error between the filtered reference and the auxiliary output of plant becomes zero. Computer simulation has shown that the proposed method works effectively on the nonlinear nonminimum phase system with time delays and changed system parameter.

  • The MFC(Mass Flow Controller) is an equipment that measures and controls mass flow rates of fluid. Most of the HFC system is still using the PID algorithm. The PID algorithm shows superior performance on the MFC system. But the PID algorithm in the MFC system has a few problems as followed. The characteristic of the MFC system is changed according to the operating environment. And, when the piezo valve that uses the control valve is assembled in the MFC system, a coupling error is generated. Therefore, it is very difficult to find out the exact parameters of MFC system. In this paper, we propose adaptive PID algorithm in order to compensate these problems of a traditional PID algorithm. The adaptive PID algorithm estimates the parameters of MFC system using LMS(Least Mean Square) algorithm and calculates the coefficients of PID controller. Besides, adaptive PID algorithm shows better transient response because adaptive PID algorithm includes a feedforward. And we implement MFC system using proposed adaptive PID algorithm with self-tuning and Ziegler and Nickels's method. Finally, comparative analysis of the proposed adaptive PID and the traditional PID is shown.

  • The problem considered in this paper is that the tip position of a flexible cantilever beam is controlled to follow a command signal, using a pair of piezoelectric actuators at the clamped end. The beam is lightly damped and so the natural transient response is rather long, and also since the sensor and actuator are not collocated, the plant response is non-minimum phase. Two control strategies were investigated. The first involved conventional PID control in which the feedback gains were adjusted to give the fastest closed-loop response to a step input. The second control strategy was based on an internal model control (IMC) architecture. The control filter in the IMC controller was a digital FIR device designed to minimize the expectation of the mean square tracking error. The IMC controller designed fur the beam was found to have very much reduced settling times to a step input compared with those of the PID controller.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy and satisfaction with IVIC300 (Intravenous infusion controller). Method: The subjects consisted of 90 nurses and 100 patients. Data collected during July 2013 were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and $X^2$-test (Chi-Square). Result: The error value of IVIC300 was less than that of Dosi-flow. Differences of error values according to variable of fluid infusion (needle's gauge, patient's moving, patient's calls, and nurse's arabitary calls) were not significant. The mean scores for satisfaction with IVIC300 of nurses ($3.67{\pm}.76$), patients ($3.75{\pm}.63$) were above average. Satisfaction with IVIC300 of nurses differed significantly according to age, work unit, and clinical career. Satisfaction with IVIC300 of patients was not significantly different according to general characteristics. Conclusion: These findings indicate that it is proven the accuracy of IVIC300, and is considered individual characteristics in use IVIC300.

  • The Self Tuning Regulator(STR) method which is an approach of adaptive control theory, is ap-plied to design the fully automatic power controller of the nonlinear reactor model. The adaptive control represent a proper approach to design the suboptimal controller for nonlinear, time-varying stochastic systems. The control system is based on a thirdorder linear model with unknown, time-varying parameters. The updating of the parameter estimates is achieved by the recursive extended least square method with a variable forgetting factor. Based on the estimated parameters, the output (average coolant temperature) is predicted one-step ahead. And then, a weighted one-step ahead controller is designed so that the difference between the output and the desired output is minimized and the variation of the control rod position is small. Also, an integral action is added in order to remove the steadystate error. A nonlinear M plant model was used to simulate the proposed controller of reactor power which covers a wide operating range. From the simulation result, the performances of this controller for ramp input (increase or decrease) are proved to be successful. However, for step input this controller leaves something to be desired.

  • In this paper, the feedforward control with least mean square (LMS) adaptive algorithm is proposed and examined to reduce rotating error by runout of an active magnetic bearing system. Using eddy-current type gap sensor fur control, the electrical runout caused by non-uniform material properties of sensor target produces rotational error amplified in feedback control loop, so this runout should be eliminated to increase rotating accuracy. The adaptive feedforward controller is designed and examined its tracking and stability performances numerically with established frequency response function. The tested grinding spindle system is manufactured with a 5.5 ㎾ internal motor and 5-axis active magnetic bearing system including 5 eddy current gap sensors which have approximately 15 ~ 30 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of electrical runout. According to the experimental analysis, the error signal in radial bearings is reduced to less than 5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ when it is rotating up to 50,000 rpm due to applying the feedforward control for first order harmonic frequency, and vibration of the spindle base is also reduced about same frequency.
