  • Stress wave propagation plays an important role in many engineering problems for reducing industrial noise and vibrations. In this paper, the dispersion-corrected finite element model is proposed for reducing the dispersion error in simulation of stress wave propagation. At eliminating the numerical dispersion error arising from the numerical simulation of stress wave propagation, numerical dispersion characteristics of the wave equation based finite element model are analyzed and some dispersion control scheme are proposed. The validity of the dispersion correction techniques is demonstrated by comparing the numerical solutions obtained using the present techniques.

  • In this paper, we propose a new type of nonlinear fixed interval smoothing filter which is modified from the existing nonlinear smoothing filter. A nonlinear smoothing filter is derived from two-filter formulas. For the backward filter, the propagation and update equation of error states are derived. Particularly the modified update equation of the backward filter use the estimated error terms from the forward filter. Smoothing algorithm is altered into the compatible form with the new type of the backward fitter. An advantage of the proposed algorithm is more efficient than the existing one because propagation in backward filter is very simple from the implementation point of view. We apply the proposed nonlinear smoothing ...

  • We propose a new type of nonlinear fixed interval smoother to which an existing nonlinear smoother is modified. The nonlinear smoother is derived from two-filter formulas. For the backward filter. the propagation and the update equation of error states are derived. In particular, the modified update equation of the backward filter uses the estimated error terms from the forward filter. Data fusion algorithm, which combines the forward filter result and the backward filter result, is altered into the compatible form with the new type of the backward filter. The proposed algorithm is more efficient than the existing one because propagation in backward filter is very simple from the implementation point of view. We apply the proposed nonlinear smoothing algorithm to off-line navigation system and show the proposed algorithm estimates position, and altitude fairly well through the computer simulation.

  • In this paper, we propose a dynamic localization method using a rotating sonar and a map. The proposed method is implemented by using extended Kalman filter. The state equation is based on the encoder propagation model and the encoder error model, and the measurement equation is a map-based measurement equation using a rotating sonar sensor. By utilizing sonar beam characteristics, map-based measurements are updated while AMR is moving continuously. By modeling and estimating systematic errors of a differential encoder, the position is successfully estimated even the interval of the map-based measurement. Monte-Carlo simulation shows that the proposed global position estimator has the performance of a few millimeter order in position error and of a few tenth degrees in heading error and of compensating systematic errors of the differential encoder well.

  • This paper addressed a relative navigation method for autonomous rendezvous and docking of cube-satellites using single frequency Differential GPS (DGPS) under the intermittent communication between satellites. Since the ionospheric error of GPS measurement is variable depending on the visible satellites, a few meters error of relative navigation is occurred in the Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) environment. Therefore, it is essential to remove the ionospheric error to perform relative navigation. Besides, an intermittent communication period for receiving GPS measurements of the target satellite is limited for getting information every sampling time. To solve this problem, a method combining range domain DGPS and orbit propagation is proposed in this paper. The proposed method improves the performance of DGPS by using Hatch filter and solves an intermittent communication problem by estimating the relative position and velocity using Hill-Clohessy-Wiltshire Equation. Through the simulation, it is verified that the suggested algorithm provides the relative position error within RMS 0.5 m and the relative velocity error within RMS 3 cm/s. Furthermore, it has the advantage that it is suitable for real-time implementation using single-frequency GPS measurements and is computationally efficient.

  • In this paper, a singularity problem of the state transition matrix is investigated in the spatial propagation when the spatial matrix differential equation is constructed via time finite element analysis. A parametric study shows that the degree of singularity of the state transition matrix depends on the degree of flexibility of the structures. As an alternative to avoid the numerical problems due to the singularity, an analytic solution fur spatial propagation of the flexible structures is proposed. In the proposed method, the spatial properties of the structure are analytically expressed by a combination of transcendental functions. The analytic solution serves fast and accurate results by eliminating the possibility of the error accumulation caused by the boundary condition. Several numerical examples are shown to validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

  • The success of target reconstruction in SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) imaging system is greatly dependent on the coherent detection. Primary causes of incoherent detection are uncompensated target or sensor motion, random turbulence in propagation media, wrong path in radar platform, and etc. And these appear as multiplicative phase error to the echoed signal, which consequently, causes fatal degradations such as fading or dislocation of target image. In this paper, we present iterative phase error estimation scheme which uses echoed data in all temporal frequencies. We started with analyzing wave equation for one point target and extend to overall echoed data from the target scene - The two wave equations governing the SAR signal at two temporal frequencies of the radar signal are combined to derive a method to reconstruct the complex phase error function. Eventually, this operation attains phase error correction algorithm from the total received SAR signal. We verify the success of the proposed algorithm by applying it to the simulated spotlight-mode SAR data.

  • In this paper a two dimensional network adjustment theory is developed to analyze the plane trilateration network of single triangle network, of quadrilateral network, of polygon trilateration network and of combined network. The characteristics of error were analysed by developing an error propagation equation for each form of plane trilateration network. In case of combined network, the result of error analysis was represented by error ellipses and gross error detection was carried out by data snooping method.

  • This paper presents an analysis of the performance degradation of coefficient approximation and frequency deviation in phase measurement algorithm based on Sliding-DFT. The analytic derivation is based on the statistics of the error dynamic equation that describes the error propagation of the recursion. The analysis result is intended to obtain a closed-form equation of error variance in terms of the number of bits used in coefficient approximation, the length of the DFT data block, and noise. It is verified with data obtained from the computer simulations.

  • With an aim at eliminating the numerical dispersion error arising from the numerical simulation of stress wave propagation, numerical dispersion characteristics of the wave equation based one-dimensional finite element model are analyzed and some dispersion control scheme are proposed in this paper The dispersion analyses are carried out for two types of mass matrix, namely the consistent and the lumped mass matrices. Based on the finding of the analyses, dispersion correction techniques are developed for both the implicit and explicit schemes. For the implicit scheme, either the weighting factor for the spatial derivatives of each time level or the lumping coefficient for mass matrix is adjusted to minimize the numerical dispersion. In the case of the explicit scheme an artificial dispersion term is introduced in the governing equation. The validity of the dispersion correction techniques proposed in this study is demonstrated by comparing the numerical solutions obtained using the Present techniques with the analytical ones.
