  • Mixed finite element method is developed to approxi-mate the solution of the initial-boundary value problem for a strongly nonlinear second-order hyperbolic equation in divergence form. Exis-tence and uniqueness of the approximation are proved and optimal-order $L\infty$-in-time $L^2$-in-space a priori error estimates are derived for both the scalar and vector functions approximated by the method.

  • In this paper, we use a modified Tikhonov regularization method to solve the Fredholm integral equation of the first kind. Under the assumption that measured data are contaminated with deterministic errors, we give two error estimates. The convergence rates can be obtained under the suitable choices of regularization parameters and the number of measured points. Some numerical experiments show that the proposed method is effective and stable.

  • In this paper, we construct fully discrete discontinuous Galerkin approximations to the solution of linear Sobolev equations. We apply a symmetric interior penalty method which has an interior penalty term to compensate the continuity on the edges of interelements. The optimal convergence of the fully discrete discontinuous Galerkin approximations in ${\ell}^{\infty}(L^2)$ norm is proved.

  • We study an age-dependent s-i-s epidemic model with spatial diffusion. The model equations are described by a nonlinear and nonlocal system of integro-differential equations. Finite difference methods along the characteristics in age-time domain combined with finite elements in the spatial variable are applied to approximate the solution of the model. Stability of the discrete periodic solution is investigated.

  • Based on Landau-type transformation, a Stefan problem with non-linear free boundary condition is transformed into a system consisting of parabolic equation and the ordinary differential equations. Semidiscrete approximations are constructed. Optimal orders of convergence of semidiscrete approximation in $L_2$, $H^1$ and $H^2$ normed spaces are derived.

  • In this paper, we develop discontinuous Galerkin methods with penalty terms, namaly symmetric interior penalty Galerkin methods to solve nonlinear parabolic equations. By introducing an appropriate projection of u onto finite element spaces, we prove the optimal convergence of the fully discrete discontinuous Galerkin approximations in ${\ell}^2(L^2)$ normed space.

  • In order to simplify the offline identification of induction motor parameters, a method based on optimization using a Tabu Search algorithm is proposed. The Tabu Search algorithm is used to minimize the error between the actual data and an estimated model. The robustness of the method is shown by identifying parameters of the induction motor in three different cases. The simulation results show that the method successfully estimates the motor parameters.

  • In this paper, we consider a minimum distance (M.D.) estimation based on kernels for U-statistics. We use Cramer-von Mises type distance function which measures the discrepancy between U-empirical distribution function(d.f.) and modeled d.f. of kernel. In the distance function, we allow various integrating measures, which can be finite, $\sigma$-finite or discrete. Then we derive the asymptotic normality and study the qualitative robustness of M. D. estimates.

  • We propose an estimation procedure that can be used for detecting structural changes in the seasonal cointegrated vector autoregressive model. The asymptotic properties of the estimates and the test statistics for the parameter change are provided. A simulation example is presented to illustrate this method and its concept.

  • In [3], Franca and Stenberg developed several Galerkin least squares methods for the solution of the problem of linear elasticity. That work concerned itself only with the error estimates of the method. It did not address the related problem of finding effective methods for the solution of the associated-linear systems. In this work, we present computational experiments of W-cycle multigrid method. Computational experiments show that the convergence is uniform as the parameter, $\nu$, goes to 1/2.
