Linear regression under log-concave and Gaussian scale mixture errors: comparative study

  • Gaussian error distributions are a common choice in traditional regression models for the maximum likelihood (ML) method. However, this distributional assumption is often suspicious especially when the error distribution is skewed or has heavy tails. In both cases, the ML method under normality could break down or lose efficiency. In this paper, we consider the log-concave and Gaussian scale mixture distributions for error distributions. For the log-concave errors, we propose to use a smoothed maximum likelihood estimator for stable and faster computation. Based on this, we perform comparative simulation studies to see the performance of coefficient estimates under normal, Gaussian scale mixture, and log-concave errors. In addition, we also consider real data analysis using Stack loss plant data and Korean labor and income panel data.

  • Wireless Sensor Networks have been proposed for several location-dependent applications. For such systems, the cost and limitations of the hardware on sensing nodes prevent the use of range-based localization schemes that depend on absolute point to point distance estimates. Because coarse accuracy is sufficient for most sensor network applications, solutions in range-free localization are being pursued as a cost-effective alternative to more expensive range-based approaches. In this paper, we proposed a modified DV-Hop (range-free localization) algorithm which reduces node's location error and cumulated distance error by minimizing localization error. Simulation results have verified the high estimation accuracy with our approach which outperforms the classical DV-Hop.

대변형 유한요소해석에서 요소망의 재구성을 위한 기준 (A Remeshing Criterion for Large Deformation Finite Element Analysis)

  • In this paper, a remeshing criterion has been suggested in order to order to automate the remeshing decision during finite element analysis of metal forming. In order to use for the remeshing decision, two of remeshing criteria have been investigated. One is the use of error estimates based on errors in stresses and strain rate of the finite element solution and the other is the use of geometric characterisreics of distorted elements. As a result, the strain rate error estimate in power norm based on the former is found to give more valuable information about remeshing decision than the ones based on the latter. Examples are given to demon- strate the usefulness of the suggested eroor estimate as a remeshing criterion.

ESTIMATES OF PHENOTYPIC AND GENETIC PARAMETERS FOR WEANING AND YEARLING WEIGHTS IN BALI BEEF CATTLE

  • Records on weaning (3803) and yearling weight (2990) of beef cattle (Bibos banteng) from the Bali Cattle Improvement Project were examined. A mixed model analysis involving all main non-genetic effects (village, year of birth, season of birth, age of dam, sex of calf, all significant interactions and age at weighing as a covariate) as fixed effects and sire nested within village as a random effect was undertaken. Variance components were estimated by Henderson's Method III. Paternal half-sib components of variance and covariance were used to estimate heritabilities of weaning and yearling weights, as well as their genetic and phenotypic correlations. Heritability estimates ($\pm$ standard error) obtained by Henderson's Method III for weaning and yearling weights were $.11{\pm}.03$ and $.13{\pm}.04$, respectively while the phenotypic and genetic correlations were estimated as .32 and $.64{\pm}.10$, respectively. The parameters estimated in this study were at the lower end of the range of reported values from various breeds. It is concluded that further information should be gathered to assist in estimating genetic parameters for other economic traits of Bali beef cattle and to provide more accurate estimates for weaning and yearling weights. These parameters should then be used to formulate a selection program to enable the genetic improvement of Bali Beef cattle.

  • 스트리밍 데이터 분석에서 개념 변화가 일어나는 시점을 정확히 탐지하는 것은 분류 모델의 성능을 유지하는 데 있어서 매우 중요한 작업이다. 오류율은 스트리밍 데이터에서 개념 변화 탐지를 위해 많이 사용되는 척도이다. 그러나 0과 1로 이루어진 이진 값만으로 예측 결과를 묘사하는 것은 분류 모델의 행동 패턴을 나타내는 유용한 정보의 손실을 초래할 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 오류율을 이용하는 대신에 확률 예측치를 사용하여 분류기의 성능 패턴을 묘사하고 급격한 변화를 탐지하는 효과적인 개념 변화 탐지 방법을 제안한다. 합성데이터와 실제 스트리밍 데이터를 이용한 실험 결과는 제안한 방법이 개념 변화 시점을 탐지하는데 뛰어난 성능을 가짐을 보여준다.

  • It is important for advanced active safety systems and autonomous driving cars to get the accurate estimates of the nearby vehicles in order to increase their safety and performance. This paper proposes a sensor fusion method for radar and vision sensors to accurately estimate the state of the preceding vehicles. In particular, we performed a study on compensating for the lateral state error on automotive radar sensors by using a vision sensor. The proposed method is based on the Interactive Multiple Model(IMM) algorithm, which stochastically integrates the multiple Kalman Filters with the multiple models depending on lateral-compensation mode and radar-single sensor mode. In addition, a Probabilistic Data Association Filter(PDAF) is utilized as a data association method to improve the reliability of the estimates under a cluttered radar environment. A two-step correction method is used in the Kalman filter, which efficiently associates both the radar and vision measurements into single state estimates. Finally, the proposed method is validated through off-line simulations using measurements obtained from a field test in an actual road environment.

An optimal regularization for structural parameter estimation from modal response

  • Solutions to the problems of structural parameter estimation from modal response using leastsquares minimization of force or displacement residuals are generally sensitive to noise in the response measurements. The sensitivity of the parameter estimates is governed by the physical characteristics of the structure and certain features of the noisy measurements. It has been shown that the regularization method can be used to reduce effects of the measurement noise on the estimation error through adding a regularization function to the parameter estimation objective function. In this paper, we adopt the regularization function as the Euclidean norm of the difference between the values of the currently estimated parameters and the a priori parameter estimates. The effect of the regularization function on the outcome of parameter estimation is determined by a regularization factor. Based on a singular value decomposition of the sensitivity matrix of the structural response, it is shown that the optimal regularization factor is obtained by using the maximum singular value of the sensitivity matrix. This selection exhibits the condition where the effect of the a priori estimates on the solutions to the parameter estimation problem is minimal. The performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated in comparison with certain algorithms selected from the literature by using a numerical example.

가상 구역 방법을 이용한 이동체 위치 추정 (Mobile Location Estimation Scheme Based on Virtual Area Concept)

  • 마이크로셀 구조에서 효율적으로 핸드오프와 채널 할당을 수행하기 위하여 이동체의 위치 및 속도를 추정 하는 것이 중요한 문제로 대두되고 있다. 이전 연구에서, 마이크로셀 환경에서 응용할 수 있는 이동체의 위치 추정 방법을 제안했다. 제안된 방법은 탐색 지역을 단계적으로 좁혀서 이동체가 위치한 지역을 결정하는 3단계 위치 추정 방법에 근거한다. 3단계 위치 추정 방법을 사용하여, 섹터 추정 단계에서 섹터를 추정하고, 트랙 추정 단계에서는 트랙을, 최종적으로 블럭 추정 단계에서 이동체가 위치한 블럭을 추정한다. 그러나 이 방법은 이동체가 섹터나 트랙의 경계 지점에 위치할 경우 추정의 정확도가 감소되는 문제점이 있다. 본 연구에서는 가상구역 개념을 이용하여, 경계 지역에 있는 이동체에 대한 추정 오류율을 줄일 수 있는 위치추정 방법을 제안한다.

동일대역 전이중 방식 통신 시스템에서 자기간섭 제거에 따른 성능 분석 (Performance Analysis of In-Band Full-duplex Communication Systems with Self-Interference Cancellation)

  • 본 논문은 자기간섭 (self-interference, SI) 신호가 존재하는 환경에서 동일대역 전이중 방식 통신 시스템의 성능과 SI 제거 기법에 대해서 분석하였다. 동일대역 전이중 방식 통신 시스템이 원하는 오율 성능을 달성하기 위해서는 SI 신호를 제거해야 하며, 이는 전파 영역과 아날로그 영역, 디지털 영역에서 차례로 수행되어야 한다. 전파 영역에서 안테나의 송수신 빔을 물리적으로 분리시켜서 신호 감쇄를 달성할 수 있다. 아날로그 영역과 디지털 영역에서는 SI 신호의 채널 추정값과 송신 신호를 기반으로 SI 신호를 재생한 후에 원하는 수신 신호로부터 제거할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 전파 영역에서의 SI 신호를 충분히 감쇄시킬 수 있다고 가정하고, Least squares 방식으로 SI 신호의 채널을 추정하고 그 추정값을 기반으로 아날로그 영역과 디지털 영역에서 SI 신호를 순차적으로 제거하여 동일대역 전이중 방식 통신 시스템이 원하는 오율 성능을 달성할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

  • In this paper, Active Noise Control(ANC) algorithm is proposed based on the estimated frequency estimator of the reference signal. The conventional feedforward ANC algorithms should measure the reference and use it to calculate the gradient of the squared error and filter coefficients. For ANC systems applied to aircrafts and passenger ships, engines from which reference signal is usually measured is so far from seats where main part of controller is placed that the scheme might be difficult to implement or very costly. Feedback ANC algorithm which doesn't need to measure the reference uses the error signal to update the filter and is sensitive to unexpected transient noise like a sneeze, clapping of hands and so on The proposed algorithm estimates frequencies of the desired signal in real time using adaptive notch filter. New frequency estimation algorithm is proposed with the improved convergence rate, threshold SNR and computational simplicity. Reference is not measured but created with the estimated frequencies. It has strong similarity to the conventional feedback control because reference is made from error signal. Enhanced error signal is used to update the controller for better performance under the measurement noise and impact noise. The proposed ANC algorithm is compared with the conventional feedback control.
