  • The goal of this paper is to determine the eigenvalues of a uniform rectangular plate carrying any number of spring-damper-mass systems using an analytical-and-numerical-combined method (ANCM). To this end, a technique was presented to replace each "spring-damper-mass" system by a massless equivalent "spring-damper" system with the specified effective spring constant and effective damping coefficient. Then, the mode superposition approach was used to transform the partial differential equation of motion into the matrix equation, and the eigenvalues of the complete system were determined from the associated characteristic equation. To verify the reliability of the presented theory, all numerical results obtained from the ANCM were compared with those obtained from the conventional finite element method (FEM) and good agreement was achieved. Since the order of the property matrices for the equation of motion obtained from the ANCM is much lower than that obtained from the FEM, the CPU time required by the ANCM is much less than that by the FEM.

  • This paper presents a new vibration control device by which the mass and damping of a structure is increased equivalently. The vibration control system, named toggle-rotational inertia-viscous damper, can be utilized effectively in applications of small structural drift. Numerical analysis shows that because the relative drift of a structure can be effectively amplified by the toggle system, the device has a great performance in the vibration control without the increase of the damper capacity and size. It is also observed that vibration control effects is caused by the increase of equivalent mass and damping due to the rotational inertia and damping of the device.

  • The earthquake-resistant structural systems have to ensure the sufficient stiffness and ductility for the stability. For those purposes, recently, the performance design concept to increase the degree of absorbed energy level of structures has been proposed. One practical way of the performance design in the spatial structures is to apply the isolation system to boundary parts of roof system and sub-structure to obtain the target performance. So, it is necessary to examine the characteristics of dynamic behavior of spatial structures governed by higher modes rather than lower modes different from the cases of high rise buildings. The objectives of this paper are to develop the equivalent lumped mass model to simplify the analytical processes and to investigate the dynamic behavior of roof system according to the mass and the stiffness of sub-structures as a fundamental study of performance design for the spatial structures.

  • In this study, we propose a practical method to improve the clarity and the period of the beat in a Korean bell. Proper beating in vibration and sound is very important feature in Korean bell. An equivalent ring theory is applied and finite element analysis is performed to determine the condition of the asymmetry of the bell. The clearity and the period of the beat are improved by attaching a counter mass or decreasing local thickness. This paper shows that the improved the attaching a counter mass or decreasing local thickness. This paper of the beat are improved by attaching a counter mass or decreasing local thickness. This paper shows that the amount and position of the local variation for the required beat condition can be predicted by using the equivalent model, The predicted results are verified by the experiment.

  • This Paper describes the dynamic load simulator for high-speed elevator system, which can emulate 3-mass system as well as equivalent 1-mass system. In order to implement the equivalent inertia of entire elevator system the conventional simulators have generally utilized the mechanical inertia(flywheel) with large radius, which makes the entire system large and heavy. In addition, the mechanical inertia should be replaced each time in order to est another elevator system. In this paper, the dynamic load simulation methods using electrical inertia are Presented so hat the volume and weight of simulator system are greatly reduced and the adjustment of inertia value can be achieved easily by software. Experimental results show the feasibility of this simulator system.

  • A three-dimensional discrete fracture network model was developed in order to simulate the hydraulic characteristics of a granitic rock mass at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) Underground Research Tunnel (KURT). The model used a three-dimensional discrete fracture network (DFN), assuming a correlation between the length and aperture of the fractures, and a trapezoid flow path in the fractures. These assumptions that previous studies have not considered could make the developed model more practical and reasonable. The geologic and hydraulic data of the fractures were obtained in the rock mass at the KURT. Then, these data were applied to the developed fracture discrete network model. The model was applied in estimating the representative elementary volume (REV), the equivalent hydraulic conductivity tensors, and the amount of groundwater inflow into the tunnel. The developed discrete fracture network model can determine the REV size for the rock mass with respect to the hydraulic behavior and estimate the groundwater flow into the tunnel at the KURT. Therefore, the assumptions that the fracture length is correlated to the fracture aperture and the flow in a fracture occurs in a trapezoid shape appear to be effective in the DFN analysis used to estimate the hydraulic behavior of the fractured rock mass.

  • The purpose of this paper is to identify through experiments the finite element (FE) model of a building structure using a magnetorheological (MR) fluid damper. The FE model based system identification (FEBSI) technique evaluates the control performance of an MR damper that has nonlinear characteristics as equivalent linear properties such as mass, stiffness, and damping. The Bingham and Bouc-Wen models were used for modeling the MR damper and the equivalent damping increased by the MR damper was predicted by applying an equivalent linearization technique. Experimental results indicate that the predicted equivalent damping matches well with the experimentally obtained damping.

The equivalent beam model were studied in detail. Non-structural node in the cross section of original model is given to expressing their motion. Equivalent mass matrix and stiffness matrix calculated using Guyan reduction method. Material Properties of beam was obtained from the direct comparison between equivalent model and that of Timoshenko beam model. The calculated natural frequencies and mode shape are compared with the reference results and coincided well. The results were compared with the confirmed results, which were in good agreement.

  • Hwang et al (2001) proposed a new method for an evaluation of equivalent damping ratios of a linear structure with linear or nonlinear damping devices. This procedure has a disadvantage that it requires time history analysis for the whole system including damping devices, which may be troublesome for practical application. To tackle this problem closed form formulas for equivalent damping ratios are proposed in this study. It is assumed that the responses of MDOF system can be reproduced by an equivalent SDOF system which vibrates in a fundamental mode. The numerical analyses of a ten-story building equipped with linear viscous damper or active mass damper or friction damper show the effectiveness of equivalent SDOF model and closed form formulas.

  • In this study, we propose a new method to control both the beat clarity and beat period in a ring structure. An equivalent ring which satisfies the measured mode condition is determined by using the equivalent ring theory. Theoretical analysis and finite element analysis on the equivalent ring are performed to investigate the effect of the local structural modification on the beat clarity and beat period. Beat clarity and period are improved by attaching asymmetric mass or decreasing local thickness. Through the analysis on the equivalent ring, the proper position and the amount of the local variation are determined to satisfy the required clarity and period condition. All the analysis results are compared and verified by the experiment.
