Alleviation of ascorbic acid-induced gastric high acidity by calcium ascorbate in vitro and in vivo

  • Ascorbic acid is one of the most well-known nutritional supplement and antioxidant found in fruits and vegetables. Calcium ascorbate has been developed to mitigate the gastric irritation caused by the acidity of ascorbic acid. The aim of this study was to compare calcium ascorbate and ascorbic acid, focusing on their antioxidant activity and effects on gastric juice pH, total acid output, and pepsin secretion in an in vivo rat model, as well as pharmacokinetic parameters. Calcium ascorbate and ascorbic acid had similar antioxidant activity. However, the gastric fluid pH was increased by calcium ascorbate, whereas total acid output was increased by ascorbic acid. In the rat pylorus ligation-induced ulcer model, calcium ascorbate increased the gastric fluid pH without changing the total acid output. Administration of calcium ascorbate to rats given a single oral dose of 100 mg/kg as ascorbic acid resulted in higher plasma concentrations than that from ascorbic acid alone. The area under the curve (AUC) values of calcium ascorbate were 1.5-fold higher than those of ascorbic acid, and the $C_{max}$ value of calcium ascorbate (91.0 ng/ml) was higher than that of ascorbic acid (74.8 ng/ml). However, their $T_{max}$ values were similar. Thus, although calcium ascorbate showed equivalent antioxidant activity to ascorbic acid, it could attenuate the gastric high acidity caused by ascorbic acid, making it suitable for consideration of use to improve the side effects of ascorbic acid. Furthermore, calcium ascorbate could be an appropriate antioxidant substrate, with increased oral bioavailability, for patients with gastrointestinal disorders.

Assessment of Arable Soil Erosion Risk in Seonakdong River Watershed using GIS, RS and USLE (USLE 및 GIS, RS를 이용한 서낙동강 유역 농경지 토양침식 위험도 평가)

  • Purpose of this study was to estimate of soil erosion, which is related with crop productivity and water quality in watershed, in Seonakdong river watershed using USLE. The data set for USLE estimation were derived from detailed digital map(K factor), satellite imagery(C and P factors) and DEM(LS factor). The R factor was calculated by AWS data from Kimhae agricultural technology center. The soil loss from arable land was equivalent of 31.5% of total soil loss in Seonakdong river watershed. The soil loss amount of paddy field and upland were 2.8% and 97.2% of arable land, respectively, even in the area where paddy field was occupied much largely as 76.3%. The reason of large amount of soil loss from upland was that 30.4% of upland was distributed at "severe" and "very severe" soil erosion grade in watershed. The distribution of soil erosion grade during cropping season(May-Sept.) was similar to the annual soil loss. Soil erosion of non-cropping season(Oct.-Apr.) was small due to a low R factor. But, soil erosion grade of near mountain footslope areas showed severe and very severe even in non-cropping season.

Refractometric Glucose Biosensor Incorporating a Vertically Coupled Microring Resonator in Polymeric Waveguides (수직형 폴리머 마이크로링 공진기 기반의 글루코스 바이오 센서)

  • A refractometric glucose biosensor incorporating a vertically coupled microring resonator in polymers was proposed and realized. The ring was covered with a target analyte of glucose solution with a certain concentration, so that its effective refractive index could be altered and, as a result, the resonance wavelength of the sensor was shifted. Therefore the concentration of the glucose solution can be estimated by observing the shift in the resonance wavelength. Two schemes were exploited for enhancing the sensitivity of the sensor. First, the effective refractive index of the polymeric waveguide used for the resonator sensor was adjusted to approach that of the target analyte as best as possible. Second, the ring waveguide, which serves as a crucial sensing part, was appropriately over-etched to enlarge its contact area with the analyte. The proposed resonator sensor was designed with the beam propagation method. The refractive indices of the core and cladding polymer involved were 1.430 and 1.375 respectively, leading to the waveguide's effective refractive index of ${\sim}1.390$, which is faiirly close to that of the glucose solution of ${\sim}1.333$. The prepared ring resonator with the $400-{\mu}m$ radius exhibited the free spectral range of 0.66 nm, the bandwidth of 0.15 nm, and the quality factor of 10,000. For the sensor operating at 1,550 nm wavelength, the achieved sensitivity was as great as 0.28 pm/(mg/dL), which is equivalent to 200 nm/RIU.

RADIOGRAPHIC INTERPRETATION OF EXPERIMENTALLY PRODUCED BONY DEFECT ACCORDING TO kVp (관전압 변화에 다른 실험적 골결손부의 방사선사진상의 판독)

  • The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate radiographic interpretation, of various sized 60 periapical and 60 cancellous lesions in 10 mandibular sections of 5 dogs according to kVp (65, 70, 75, 80 and 85 kVp). The results were as follows; The change of kilovoltage within 65kVp-85kVp range did not have influence on the radiographic interpretation of the same-sized bony defects at the constant radiographic density (p> 0.05). When the bony defects were less than the size of No.2 round bur, radiographic interpretation of bony defects prepared with No.2 round bur was easier than those prepared with No. 1 round bur at 80-85kVp in periapical region (p<0.05). However, in cancellous bone, this radiographic interpretation was easier at 65-75kVp (p<0.05). There were significant differences in the radiographic interpretation between the defects confined only to the cancellous, bone and the defects involved in the compact bone (p<0.05). However there were no significant differences between the defects confined only to the cancellous bone and the defects involved in junctional area of cancellous and compact bone (p>0.05). From the results of densitometric analysis, there was a difference in densitometric measurements at the same radiographic interpretation scores, and aluminum equivalent differences of 0.15-1.66㎜ thickness were needed for radiographic interpretation.

Evaluation of Site-Specific Seismic Amplification Characteristics in Plains of Seoul Metropolitan Area (서울 평야 지역에 대한 부지 고유의 지진 증폭 특성 평가)

  • Total 350 borehole profiles were selected from the database of borehole logs in Seoul, for the site-specific seismic evaluation at two 4km${\times}$4km plain areas. Equivalent-linear site response analyses for the selected 350 sites were conducted based on shear wave velocity (Vs) Profiles, which were determined from the N-Vs correlation established using borehole seismic testing results in the inland areas of Korea. Most sites were categorized as site classes C and D based on the mean Vs to 30 m in depth (Vs30) ranging from 250 to 550 m/s. The she periods of the plains in Seoul ranging between 0.1 and 0.4 sec were significantly lower than those of the western US, from which the site coefficients in Korea were derived. For plains in Seoul, the site coefficients, Fa's and Fv's specified in the Korean seismic design guide, underestimate the ground motion in short-period (0.1-0.5 sec) band and overestimate the ground motion in mid-period (0.4-2.0 sec) band, respectively, because ol the differences in the geotechnical conditions between Seoul and the western US, although the Fa's in several sites overestimate the motion due to the base Isolation effect resulted from the soft layer in soil deposit.

Estimation of the Nitrogen and Base Cation Uptake of South Korean Forest (남한 삼림의 질소와 염기성 양이온의 흡수량 추정)

  • Estimation of the annual net production, nitrogen (N) and base cation (BC=K, Mg, Ca) uptake by stocked forests in South Korea has been done with national statistical data of forestry from 1995 to 1999. The annual net production of stems and branches was about 1.8 ton DM ha/sup -1/ yr/sup -1/. The net productivity of deciduous forests was higher than that of coniferous forests. Total net production of the stocked forests from the whole stocked area of South Korea of 6.246×10/sup 6/ ha, was about 1.13×10/sup 7 ton DM/yr, and the total harvested biomass obtained from timber production data in 1999, was estimated about 6.1×105 ton DM/yr that was equivalent to 98 kg DM ha/sup -1/ yr/sup -1/f. Net growth uptake of N and BC were 350 mol ha/sup -1/ yr/sup -1/ and 296 mol ha/sup -1/ yr/sup -1/ respectively, and the content of N and BC contained in the harvested biomass were 20 mol ha/sup -1/ yr/sup -1/ and 16 mol ha/sup -1/ yr/sup -1/ respectively. Net uptake of N was higher than that of BC. Total net uptake of N and BC from growth and harvest by stocked forests in South Korea were 2.309×10/sup 9/ mol/yr and 1.953×10/sup 9 mol/yr respectively.

Uncooled Metallic Thin-film Thermopile Infrared Detector (비냉각 금속 박막형 열전퇴 적외선 검지기)

  • Uncooled metallic thin-film thermopile infrared detectors have been fabricated, and the figures of merit for the detectors were examined. The hot junctions of a thermopile were prepared on a $Si_{3}N_{4}/SiO_{2}/Si_{3}N_{4}$-membrane which acts as a thermal isolation layer, the cold junctions on the membrane supported with the silicon rim which functions as a heat sink, and Au-black was used as an infrared absorber. Infrared absorbance of Au-black, which strongly depends on the chamber pressure during Au-evaporation and its mass per area, was found to be about 90 % in the wavelength range from 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 14${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Voltage responsivity, noise equivalent power, and specific detectivity of Bi-Sb thermopile infrared detector at 5 Hz-chopping frequency were about 10.5V/W, 2.3 nW/Hz$^{1/2}$, 및 $1.9\times10^{7}$ cm.Hz$^{1/2}$/w at room temperature in air, respectively.

Antioxidant Activity and Safety Evaluation of Juice Containing Protaetia brevitarsis (흰점박이꽃무지(Protaetia brevitarsis) 함유 음료의 in vitro 항산화 관련 생리활성효능 및 안전성 검증)

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the antioxidant activity of vegetable extracts (pumpkin, aloe, and artichoke) containing Protaetia brevitarsis (PB) and the clinical and pathological changes in ICR mice after a single oral administration. The total polyphenol (TP) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging ability, total radical trapping antioxidant potential (TRAP), oxygen radical absorbance activity (ORAC), and single cell gel electrophoresis assay were done to measure their antioxidant activities. The effect of vegetable extracts containing PB in TP and the ORAC value was significantly higher than those without PB. In addition, all extracts had effective $DPPH{\cdot}$ scavenging and $ABTS{\cdot}+$ scavenging activities. The protective effect of vegetable extracts with/without PB on $H_2O_2$-induced DNA damage was found. In a single-dose toxicity study, mortality, body weight, physiological signs, and biochemical analysis were analyzed. Seventy mice were randomly assigned to 7 experimental groups and were administered three vegetable extracts with and without PB (2 g/kg). A full 14 days after administration, no mice mortality was observed in any group. Body weight, physiological signs, and biochemical analysis were never significantly different from those of the control group. Taken together, these findings indicate that vegetable extracts containing PB with antioxidant activities and safety could be applied as medicinal and edible resources in an industrial area.

Comparison on the fire performance of additional insulation materials for improving the fire retardancy in engine-room of FRP vessel (FRP 선박 기관실 난연성 향상을 위한 추가 방열재의 화재성능비교)

  • To prevent the flame spread in FRP vessel in fire, the engine-room of the vessel should be constructed additionally with laminated fire-retardant resin over 3 times or equivalent insulation materials to former according to the relevant standard for FRP vessel structure. It is surveyed that insulation materials called 'Gel coat' are widely used in FRP fishing vessel, however, test method and its criteria for Gel coat are not clearly establish and have not been evaluated yet, while test method and criteria for fire-retardant resin and fire-retardant polyurethane composite are described in test standard for type-approval. In this study, 3 fire-retardant resins, 4 gel coats, 1 flame-retardant paint and 1 polyurethane composite were selected based on the survey and were evaluated according to both IMO FTP Code part 5 and flame-retardant test. When comparing based on CFE values from flame-spread test, average value for 4 gel coats were lower than that of 3 fire-retardant resins. As for flame-retardant test, there were no significant differences between fire-retardant resin and gel coat, based on charred area.

Development of Automated Quantitative Spray Control System for High Quality Crop Cultivation (고품질 작물 재배를 위한 자동화 정량 방제 제어 시스템 개발)

  • Recently, several researches have been studied on agricultural automation system according to convergence of IT technology with agriculture. An automatic control system of the growth environment in crops is one of the these researches. The controls of damages caused by diseases and insects pest in crops are mainly carried out by manual mode or semi-automatic mode because of farmer's concerns for poor efficiency. But, this situation needs to be improved because it occurs various problems, such as human exposure to toxic pesticides, environmental pollution and waste due to drug overuse. In order to solve these problems, we developed an automatic quantity control system which based on the amount of pesticides for area under cultivation. The amount of pesticides is calculated according to the manufacturer's instruction for pesticides. To verify the effectiveness of our developed automatic system, we also compared with the systems of manual mode and the semi-automatic mode. The experimental results of a pest control performance of an automatic quantity control system showed that automatic system can reduce overuse of drugs. These results suggested that it can be expected to replace the existing system, with equivalent effectiveness to the manual mode.
