  • In this paper, the methodology applied to the improvement of stress analyses is extended to free vibration and buckling analyses. The essence of the methodology is the Saint-Venant's principle that is applicable to beam and plate models. The principle allows one to dimensionally reduce three-dimensional elasticity problems. Thus the methodology can be employed to vibration and buckling as well as stress analysis. First, the principle is briefly revisited, and then the formations of classical beam theories are presented. To improve the predictions, the perturbed terms (unknowns) are introduced together with the warping functions that are calculated by stress equilibrium equations. The unknowns are then calculated by applying the equivalence of stress resultants (i.e., Saint-Venant's principle). As numerical examples, cantilever and simply supported beams are analytically solved. The results obtained are compared with those of the classical beam theories. It is shown that the methodology can be used to improve the predictions without introducing shear correction factors.

  • In this paper, a methodology is proposed to improve the stress prediction of plates via Saint Venant's principle. According to Saint Venant's principle, the stress resultants can be used to describe linear elastic problems. Many engineering problems have been analyzed by Euler-Bernoulli beam(E-B) and/or Kirchhoff-Love(K-L) plate models. These models are asymptotically correct, and therefore, their accuracy is mathematically guaranteed for thin plates or slender beams. By post-processing their solutions, one can improve the stresses and displacements via Saint Venant's principle. The improved in-plane and out-of-plane displacements are obtained by adding the perturbed deflection and integrating the transverse shear strains. The perturbed deflection is calculated by applying the equivalence of stress resultants before and after post-processing(or Saint Venant's principle). Accuracy and efficiency of the proposed methodology is verified by comparing the solutions obtained with the elasticity solutions for orthotropic beams.

  • In the analysis of the effects of rock tunnel blasting vibration on adjacent existing buildings, the model of simplified equivalent load produces higher calculation result of vibration, due to the lack of consideration of the millisecond delay effect. This paper, based on the static force equivalence principle of blasting load, proposes a new determination method of equivalent load of blasting vibration. The proposed method, based on the elastic-static force equivalence principle of stress wave, equals the blasting loads of several single blastholes in the same section of millisecond blasting to the triangle blasting load curve of the exploded equivalent elastic boundary surface. According to the attenuation law of stress wave, the attenuated equivalent triangle blasting load curve of the equivalent elastic boundary is applied on the tunnel excavation contour surface, obtaining the final applied equivalent load. Taking the millisecond delay time of different sections into account, the time-history curve of equivalent load of the whole section applied on the tunnel excavation contour surface can be obtained. Based on Sailing Tunnel with small spacing on Sanmenxia-Xichuan Expressway, an analysis on the blasting vibration response of the later and early stages of the tunnel construction is carried out through numerical simulation using the proposed equivalent load model considering millisecond delay effect and the simplified equivalent triangle load curve model respectively. The analysis of the numerical results comparing with the field monitoring ones shows that the calculation results obtained from the proposed equivalent load model are closer to the measured ones and more feasible.

  • Archival appraisal is a key area of archival science. This study aims to identify the knowledge structure of archival appraisal and propose appropriate translation terms. To this end, 34 entry terms related to archival appraisal were first extracted from 146 entries in the Encyclopedia of Archival Science, a leading encyclopedia in the field, and terminologies were categorized based on content analysis. Second, the contents described in the entries were assessed for each category, and the main concepts and flow of discussions were also examined. Third and last, suitable translations for each entry term were presented, and considerations were suggested for the translations, such as the application of appropriate principles of equivalence. Specifically, terms such as "records appraisal" and "archival appraisal" were recommended to be used separately.

  • This work aims to present a theoretical analysis of the electric and magnetic surface current densities of a circular microstrip antenna (CMSA) as a body of revolution. The rigorous analysis of these problems begins with the application of the equivalence principle, which introduces an unknown electric current density on the conducting surface and both unknown equivalent electric and magnetic surface current densities on the dielectric surface. These current densities satisfy the integral equations (IEs) obtained by canceling the tangential components of the electric field on the conducting surface and enforcing the continuity of the tangential components of the fields across the dielectric surface. The formulation of the radiation problems is based on the combined field integral equation. This formulation is coupled with the method of moments (MoMs) as a numerical solution for this equation. The numerical results of the electric and magnetic surface current densities on the outside boundary of a CMSA excited by $TM_{11^-}$ and $TM_{21^-}$ modes are presented. The radiation pattern is calculated numerically in the two principle planes for a CMSA and gives a good results compared with measured results published by other research workers.

  • A ray-based approach is developed to calculate the scattering from inhomogeneous dielectric objects. This approach is a natural extension of the "shooting and bouncing ray(SBR)" technique developed earlier for calculating the radar cross section of cavity structures and complex targets. In this formulation, a dense grid of rays representing the incident field is shot toward the scatterer. The curved trajectory, amplitude, phase and polarization of the ray fields inside the inhomogeneous object are computed numerically based on the laws of geometrical optics. The contributions of the exting rays to the exterior scattered field are then calculated by using the equivalence principle in conjunction with " a ray-tube integration" scheme. The ray-based approach is applied for the effect of an arcjet plasma plume on satellite reflector performance and backscattering from inhomogeneous objects.

  • The major limitation of MOM solution has alaways been the computer CPU time and storage size, needed to carry out the impedance matrix computation. A new formulation technique using Sorce Superimposion method is presented in order to cut down computerstorage requirements and CPU time based on the equivalence principle and induction theorem. The numerical results are shown to give good agreement to those calculated by the conventional method and also application example is presented.

  • Indexes, especially subject indexes, are major tools for information retrieval. To enhance the retrieval effectiveness of subject indexes, the semantic and syntactic relationships of indexing languages are very important elements. This paper examines the afore-mentioned relationships, based on purely the syntax and semantics of Korean language. The outlines of this study are as follows: 1. The characteristics and usages of controlled vocabularies, particularly subject headings lists and thesaury, are reviewed. 2. The semantic relationships, such as equivalence, hierarchical and associative relationships, are defined, and their categories are investigated in detail. Accordingly, the usages of 'See' and 'See also' references are suggested circumstantially. 3. The syntactic relationships are also examined. Particularly, for the syntactic relationships of multiword indexing terms, two kinds of subject entry formats are compared. Since it is more rational for subject headings organized by the principle of context-dependency, the two-fine entry format is recommended for subject indexes. 4. Computerized production techniques of 'See' and 'See also' reference for the semantic relationships of indexing terms are presented. 5. Computerized production techniques of subject indexes representing the syntactic relationships of indexing terms are also presented.

  • By employing the concept of superimposing the induced current on partial scattere roled as a secondary source, matrix Green's function was derived. The procedure in the way of derivation presented here was based on the equivalence principle and the induction theorem and applying moment methods to the resulting electric field integral equation. As examples, the induced current on scatterers consisted of wire/plate conductor, the input impedance and gain patterns of corner reflector antenna were calculated. And computing times required for solving matrix equation were compared with those of conventional method.

  • The acattering characteristics by the TE incident wave are analysed for its dielectric cylinder with arbitrary cross section partially covered by thin conductors. The integro differential equations consistent with boundary conditions of conductors and dielectric boundaries are derived by the equivalence principle. They are transformed into matrix equations by moment method. The rectangular dielectric ctlinder partially coverd by conductors at the upper and bottom side of the cylinder is chosen for the numerical example. Current distributions on conductors and sacttring cross sections by the cylinder are computed for the TE incident perpendicular to the conductor plane.
