Objectives: According to the new Chemical Control Act from the Korean Ministry of Environment (2014-259), workers handling hazardous chemicals should wear personal protective equipment (PPE). However the act simply states in basic phrases that every worker handling one or more of the 69 listed chemicals should wear PPE and does not consider the unique hazard characteristics of chemicals and work types. The main purpose of this study is to provide basic data to revise the act to suit particular work processes and situations. Methods: The hazard rank of the substances was classified based on hazardous characteristics such as LC50 and vapor pressure using matrix analysis. The workplace exposure risk of the substances was also determined through a matrix analysis based on the previously determined hazard ranks and the demands of manual handling together with the likelihood of accident frequency of the operation combined with the exposure of workers during spill accidents. Results: To meet the demands for developing subsequent guidelines for the risk-based application of PPE in hazardous workplaces, this study sorted the 69 listed chemicals into five hazardous categories based on their LC50 and vapor pressures, and also assigned exposure categories according to exposure vulnerability for various types of work which are frequently performed throughout the life cycle of the chemicals. Conclusion: In the next study, an exposure risk matrix will be produced using the hazard rank of chemicals and workplace exposure risk, and then PPE will be selected to suit the categories of the exposure risk matrix.
A large fraction of urban $PM_{10}$ concentrations is due to non-exhaust traffic emissions including road dust, tire wear particles, and brake lining particles. Although potential health and environmental impacts associated with tire wear debris have been increased, few environmentally and biologically relevant studies of actual tire wear debris have been conducted. Tire wear particles (TWP) are released from the tire tread as a result of the interaction between the tire and the pavement. Roadway particles (RP), meanwhile, are particles on roads composed of a mixture of elements from tires, pavements, fuels, brakes, and environmental dust. The main objective of present study is to identify the contribution of tires to the generation of RP and to assess the potential environmental and health impacts of this contribution. First, a mobile measurement system was constructed and used to measure the roadway particles on asphalt road according to vehicle speed. The equipment of the mobile system provides $PM_{10}$ concentrations by Dusttrak DRX and number density & size distribution measurements of fine and ultra-fine particles by a fast mobility particle sizer (FMPS) and an aerosol particle sizer (APS). When traveling on an asphalt road at constant speed, there is a clear tendency for PM10 concentration to increase slightly in accordance with an increase in the vehicle speed. It was also found that considerable brake wear particles and particles from tire/road interface were generated by rapid deceleration of the vehicle. The morphology and elements of the roadway particles were also analyzed using SEM-EDX technique.
This study is an initial report of actual wearing conditions and attitude based on a survey of wearing outdoor wear for men and women in their 30s to 50s who enjoy daily leisure sport activities. Most middle-aged men and women who enjoy outdoor activities were interested in new trends and clothing styles. The greatest area of interest was health(42.9%), followed by leisure and sports(38.4%); in addition, hiking(40.2%) was the most popular outdoor activity. The majority of subjects participated in outdoor activities for over 5 years(34.4%). The highest frequency of outdoor activities was conducted once or twice a month, and it took one to three hours for each activity. Nearly half of the respondents( 47.7%) answered that the goal of outdoor activities was to maintain their health. Subjects in their 40s and 50s were more equipped in their outdoor activities and in their 50s made ongoing investments despite costs. When wearing clothing, the subjects placed a priority on design(in the case of subjects in their 30s) and comfort(for subjects in their 40s and 50s). This survey shows that the subjects emphasized access to outdoor wear and equipment. In all age groups, the biggest complaint about outdoor wear was price; in addition, they were unsatisfied with the length and the sleeves of outdoor jackets. Outdoor wear will draw a positive attention for its practical use of clothing if it is developed according to consumer demands based on functionality for outdoor activities and convenience in daily life.
In the present study, TiN and CrN films were coated by arc ion plating equipment onto aluminum alloy substrate, A2024. The film thickness was about 4.65 ${\mu}m$. TiN and CrN films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray equipments. The Young's modulus and the micro-Vickers hardness of aluminum substrate were modified by the ceramic film coatings. The difference in Young's modulus between substrate and coating film would affect on the wear resistance. The critical load, Lc, was 75.8 N for TiN and 85.5 N for CrN. It indicated from the observation of optical micrographs for TiN and CrN films that lots of cracks widely propagated toward the both sides of scratch track in the early stage of MODE I. TiN film began to delaminate completely at MODE II stage. The substrate was finally glittered at MODE III stage. For CrN film, a few crack can be observed at MODE I stage. The delamination of film was not still occurred at MODE II and then was happened at MODE III. This agrees with critical load measurement which the adhesive strength was greater for CrN film than for TiN film. Consequently, it was difficult for CrN to delaminate because the adhesive strength was excellent against Al substrate. The wear process, which the film adheres and the ball transfers, could be enhanced because of the increase in loading. The wear weight of ball was less for CrN than for TiN. This means that the wear damage of ball was greater for TiN than for CrN film. It is also obvious that it was difficult to delaminate because the CrN coating film has high toughness. The coefficient of friction was less for CrN coating film than for TiN film.
The vibration data of bearings are very useful for monitoring and determining the condition of the bearings. The defect frequencies of ball bearings have been used for monitoring there condition. However, it is not easy to verify the defect frequencies as the wear progress. Therefore there is a need for an easy method to monitor the damages of bearings in real-time and to observe the variations in vibration characteristics as the wear progress. In this study, a bearing test equipment is constructed to diagnose the damage of bearings. The friction coefficient and vibration data are measured by using a torque sensor and an acceleration sensor, and the correlation between the measured data is analyzed to diagnose the condition of the bearing. We reached the following conclusions from the results. When the ball surface, inner and outer rings of a ball bearing are damaged, the friction coefficient increases to over 0.02 with an adhesion on the surface. Moreover this damage occurs more quickly with an increase in the number of revolutions. In the vibration characteristics, the amplitude of vibration wave appears high with an increase in the friction coefficient. In the high frequency range between 1000 and 2000 Hz, a wide range of frequency components with high amplitude occurs continuously irrespective of the number of revolutions.
High wear resistances are obtained with an additional coating of the surface of the decor film in the same operation of impregnating with low viscosity melamine resin by liquid overlay system. The cellulosic fibers have a good adhesion to the corundum particles and keep them sufficiently homogeneous in the blend with the resin. The amount of these fibers in nearly as big as it is in a common overlay in relation to the resin. Therefore these fibers keep the resin inside during the press process and consequently very the surface of the decor print of the film. That means that the corundum particles are equally dissipated throughout the entire layer over the decor. The change of the color of the print is nearly not visible as the particles are almost equally dissipated. Looking to the flooring purposes of liquid overlay one can see that by the lesser exposure of the corundum particles on the very surface, there is no longer an abrasive surface but a feeling like a normal melamine surface.
The failure modes of pneumatic directional control valves include leakage, wear of the spool seal, and sticking of the spool. Among them, the main failure mode of the valve is leakage. The leakage is caused by the wear of the spool seal. However, due to the characteristics of the seal material, the leakage rate is fluctuated a lot rather than constantly increased over time. If life analysis is performed using the first time data of leakage failure, predicted life cycles can be different from the real life cycles. This paper predicts life cycles of the pilot pneumatic directional control valve based on the three point moving average which considers the average of the fluctuating leakage rate.
Electroless Ni-P coating is widely used for chemical, electronic, and semiconductor equipment parts because of its corrosion resistance. The incorporation of chemically-inert PTFE particles into the Ni-P films improves properties such as, non-stick, anti-adhesive and better corrosion resistance. However, soft PTFE particles degrade the hardness, wear and abrasion resistance. In this study, effects of PTFE and W addition to the Ni-P-coatings were compared by the XRD, SEM, sheet resistance, contact angle, and microhardness measurements. The change in sheet resistance was negligible, but contact angle was doubled by the addition of PTFE and W. The microhardness was lower for Ni-P-PTFE, but higher for Ni-P-PTFE-W coatings, compared to that of Ni-P coatings.
An OEM driven working group started in January 2004 to elaborate the philosophies, concepts and test procedures for testing piston ring and cylinder liner materials as well as engine oils outside the engine using the $SRV^{(R)}$ test equipment. The different $SRV^{(R)}$ test philosophies in use by OEMs are compiled. The working group focuses on a.) ASTM sequence VIB (Fuel economy by aging oils), b.) friction and wear in the top dead region under mixed/boundary lubrication, c.) extreme pressure load under mixed/boundary lubrication and d.) hydrodynamic friction. Tribological test result and precision data are presented.
While the internet has evolved in terms of information sharing and efficiency, it is still prone to security attacks and remains vulnerable even when equipped with a security mechanism. Repeated patching against hacks involves excessive wear of system equipment and high costs. Methods of improving network security include the introduction of security equipment and network partitions, but they have not been fully effective. A fundamental solution is the Operation Content Network (OCN), which enables the strengthening of authentication. In this paper, Instead of following the existing TCP/IP system, OCN establishes an immunity-based security system through content-centric communications. Data transmission occurs over a Content Centric Network (CCN), which is provided with a protocol verified by the CCNx group. Areas protected by OCN rely only on CCN for communication without using any IP. As such, it defends the system against unknown attacks, including zero-day attacks.
