Multifunctional composite materials capable of both load-carrying and energy functions are promising innovative candidates for the advancement of contemporary technologies owing to their relative feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and optimized performance. Carbon fiber (CF)-based structural batteries utilize the graphitic inherent structure to enable the employment of carbon fibers as electrodes, current collectors, and reinforcement, while the matrix system is an ion-conduction and load transfer medium. Although it is possible to enhance performance through the modification of constituents, there remains a need for a systematic design methodology scheme to streamline the commercialization of structural batteries. In this work, a bi-phasic epoxy-based ionic liquid (IL) modified structural battery electrolyte (SBE) was developed via thermally initiated phase separation. The polymer's morphological, mechanical, and electrochemical characteristics were studied. In addition, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between CF/SBE was investigated via microdroplet tests. The results accentuated the significance of considering IFSS and matrix plasticity in designing composite structural batteries. This approach is expected to lay the foundation for realizing smart structures with optimized performance while minimizing the need for extensive trial and error, by paving the way for a streamlined computational design scheme in the future.

Interfacial and electrical properties for the carbon fiber reinforced epoxy-amine terminated (AT) PEI composites were performed using microdroplet test and electrical resistance measurements. As AT PEI content increased, the fracture toughness of epoxy-AT PEI matrix increased, and IFSS was improved due to the improved toughness and energy absorption mechanisms of AT PEI. The microdroplet in the carbon fiber/neat epoxy composite showed brittle microfailure mode. At 15 wt% AT PEI content, ductile microfailure mode appeared because of improved fracture toughness. After curing, the changes of electrical resistance (ΔR) with increasing AT PEI content increased gradually because of thermal shrinkage. The matrix fracture toughness was correlated to IFSS, TEC and electrical resistance. In cyclic strain test, the maximum stress and their slope of the neat epoxy case were higher than those of 15 wt% AT PEI. The results obtained from electrical resistance measurements under curing process and reversible stress and strain were consistent well with matrix toughness properties.
Analysis of wettability between epoxy resin and glass fabric was studied. The mixing ratios of epoxy resin and anhydride hardener were varied as 1:0.5, l:l and l:1.2. Catalyst content was fixed as 0.1wt% of the mixed resin. A curing analysis by differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) showed a possible impregnation of the mixed resin at the room temperature. An effective contact angle of the mixed epoxy resin drop onto the glass fabric being preset on a flat glass plate was measured as a function of time. The wet area of the epoxy resin drop was also measured. Behaviors of the contact angle, the droplet height, the neat wet area and the coefficient of wettability were used to evaluate the wettability of the epoxy resin onto the glass fabric. It was concluded that the equivalent ratio of 1: 1.2 was the most suitable for the wettability.
The exothermic cure kinetics of epoxy resin was controlled by hardener containing fast and slow curing agents. The epoxy risen comprises hydrogenated bisphenol A-based epoxide (HBA), fast curing agent (FH) and slow curing agent poly(propyleneglycol)bis(2-aminopropylether) (SH). Talc was used as an inorganic additive. In the process of curing, cure kinetics along with temperature was monitored by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermocouple to show that the temperature increase was well controlled by adjusting the hardener mixture. Additionally, bending and tensile strengths of the epoxy/talc composites were also measured to be lower and higher with the amount of the talc inorganic additive, respectively. It is thus concluded that the increase in the temperature during exothermic curing reaction and mechanical properties of epoxy resins are tuned by optimizing hardener mixture for successful stone conservation.
The new liquid crystalline (LC) epoxy was designed by substituting the phenylcyclohexyl (PCH) mesogen moiety with an alkyl chain at the 2,5 position of the diglycidyl terephthalate. The mesomorphic properties were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). All LC epoxy derivatives exhibited an enantiotropic smectic phase upon heating and cooling process. The LC phase temperature range was widened by mixing the eutectic mixture of LC epoxies. Interestingly, the cured LC epoxy exhibited the highest thermal conductivity of $0.4W{\cdot}m^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1}$. The novel LC epoxy with high thermal conductivity might be used as a composite material for electronic and display devices.

It is well known that flexible composite material propeller has superior radiation noise characteristics with outstanding damping effects. In this paper, three flexible composite material propellers were produced using compression molding process, and their hydrodynamic performances and radiation noise characteristics were measured. One propeller, C1, was made up from carbon/epoxy composite laminates, and the other two ones, G1 and G2, from glass/epoxy ones. Their fiber arrays were selected by the progressive damage structural analysis of propellers using composite material model MAT_162 (Composite_DMG_MSC) linked with LS-DYNA code. Carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy composite specimen tests were performed, their damage mechanisms were figured out, and their parameters were calibrated by their progressive damage structural analysis according to their damage criteria.
Interfacial evaluation of glass fiber reinforced carbon nanotube (CNT)-epoxy nanocomposite was investigated by micromechanical technique in combination with wettability test. The contact resistance of the CNT-epoxy nanocomposite was measured using a gradient specimen, containing electrical contacts with gradually-increasing spacing. The contact resistance of CNT-epoxy nanocomposites was evaluated by using the two-point method rather than the four-point method. Due to the presence of hydrophobic domains on the heterogeneous surface, the static contact angle of CNT-epoxy nanocomposite was about $120^{\circ}$, which was rather lower than that for super-hydrophobicity. For surface treated-glass fibers, the tensile strength decreased dramatically, whereas the tensile modulus exhibited little change despite the presence of flaws on the etched fiber surface. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between the etched glass fiber and the CNT-epoxy nanocomposites increased due to the enhanced surface energy and roughness. As the thermodynamic work of adhesion, $W_a$ increased, both the mechanical IFSS and the apparent modulus increased, which indicated the consistency with each other.
Peel strength of epoxy adhesives can be increased by adding some amounts of XNBR. In this case, thermal resistance of the adhesive will be decreased by decrease of glass transition temperature of the adhesive. Epoxy resin modified with siloxane-imide was synthesized to improve thermal resistance and peel strength of the adhesive, after that the properties of modified epoxy resin were compared with the commercial epoxy resin. When 5% XNBR was added to 30% modified epoxy resin, this adhesive showed 0.42 N/mm of peel strength and $155^{\circ}C$ of glass transition temperature. These properties are enough compared to the required properties by the industry, i.e., 0.3 N/mm and $150^{\circ}C$, respectively. Weight loss of the modified epoxy resin by the treatment of nitric acid and 0.1N NaOH was reduced, but weight gain by the humid condition was increased by the presence of benzene ring and imide ring. 30% modified epoxy resin blended with 5% XNBR showed 220% improvement in tensile strength and elongation compared to the case of common epoxy resin. This is due to the flexibility of the siloxane in the modified epoxy resin.
The fiber-reinforced composite materials have been advanced for various applications because of their excellent mechanical and electromagnetic properties. On their manufacturing processes, however, thermo-curing inherently produces the undesired thermal deformation mainly from temperature drop from the process temperature to the room temperature, so called spring-back. The spring-back must be understood especially in the hybrid composites in order to design and fabricate desired shape. In this research, (glass fiber / epoxy) + (carbon fiber / epoxy) unsymmetric hybrid composites were fabricated under various conditions such as cure cycle, laminate thickness, stacking sequence and curing sequence. Coupons were made and spring-back were measured using coordinate measuring machine (CMM). Using the Classical Lamination Theory (CLT) and finite element analysis (ANSYS), the behavior of spring-back were predicted and compared with the experimental data. The results from CLT and FEA agreed well with the experimental data. Although, the spring-back could be reduced by lowering curing temperature, at any case, the spring-back could not be removed completely.

Conventional piezoelectric lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) senor has high sensitivity, but it is very brittle. Recently polymer films such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) have been used use as a sensor. The advantages of PVDF are the flexibility and mechanical toughness. Simple process and possible several shapes are also additional advantages. PVDF sensor can be directly embedded and attached to a structure. In this study, PVDF sensor was embedded in single glass fiber/epoxy composites whereas PZT sensor with AE was attached to single fiber composites (SFC). Piezoelectric sensor responds to interfacial damage of SFC. The signals measured by PVDF sensor were compared to PZT sensor. PZT sensor detected the signals of fiber fracture, matrix crack, interfacial debonding and even sensor delamination, whereas PVDF sensor only detected fiber fracture signals so far, because PZT sensor is much more sensitive than current PVDF sensor. Wave voltage of fiber fracture measured by PVDF sensor was lower than that of PZT sensor, but the results of fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis were same. Wave velocity using two PZT sensors was also studied to know the internal and surface damage effect of epoxy specimens.
