The hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (BN) were firstly treated by silane coupling agents 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) and 3-glycidoxypropyl-trimethoxysilane (KH560) to introduce some amino and epoxy (EP) groups on the BN surface. These modified BN nanosheets were incorporated into an EP matrix to prepare BN@KH560/EP composites with excellent thermal conductivity and electrical insulation properties. Results showed that the thermal conductivity of BN@KH560/EP composite with 20 vol% BN dosage was found to be 0.442 W/($m{\cdot}K$), which was 81% higher than that of pure EP resin. Both BN/EP composites treated by KH550 and KH560 showed rather good electrical insulation properties, although the dielectric constant of BN@KH550/EP composites were slightly higher than BN@KH560/EP composites. Moreover, BN@KH560/EP composites also showed better thermal and mechanical properties than that of BN@KH550/EP composites.

AThe studies on ceramic preservation have been conducted widely in various institutions such as national/ public museums and research labs as well as the excavation institutions and university museums. Although there are some differences in preservation methodologies and materials used across the institutions, the variation is minimal. Specifically, epoxy resin is mostly used for ceramic restoration for its high cohesiveness, low contraction and high strength although there are some variations in for Ceramic Preservation. The synthetic resin type used according to the type of damage in the ceramic. However, the yellowing or the change of color across the time after the restoration is the weakness of epoxy resin. In this study, we aim to develop a material which minimizes this yellowing of epoxy resin while enhancing its cohesiveness and strength as well as other physical properties. We made the new material to have similar properties with those used widely for the ceramic restoration, such as EPO-TEK301$^{(R)}$, L30$^{(R)}$, XTR-311$^{(R)}$ through comparative experiments. The cohesiveness of the newly developed resin was improved to 2.51(MPa), which is similar level of XTR-311$^{(R)}$ of the 2.30(MPa) but about 2x higher than the other resins EPO-TEK301$^{(R)}$, L30$^{(R)}$ (1.21 and 1.81 (MPa), respectively). Especially, the experiment on yellowing shows that the existing resins show the range of color change at 10~25(${\Delta}E^*ab$), but the new low yellowing epoxy resin has the color change value at 8.3 (${\Delta}E^*ab$), the value lowering the yellowing effect to 1 to 3 times of the existing epoxy resin, thereby solving the issue of generating sense of differences due to change of color or yellowing.
The optimum condition of glass fiber/epoxy composites was investigated according to mixing ratio of two epoxy matrices. Novolac type epoxy and isocyanate modified epoxy were used as composites matrix. Based on chemical composition of mixing matrix, optimum mixing ratio of epoxy resins was obtained through various experiments. In order to investigate thermal stability and interface of epoxy resin, glass transition temperature was observed by DSC instrument, and static contact angle was measured by reflecting microscope. Change of IR peak and $T_g$ was conformed according to different epoxy mixing ratio. After fabrication of glass fiber/epoxy composites, tensile, compression, and flexural properties were tested by UTM by room and high temperature. The composites exhibited best mechanical properties when epoxy mixing ratio was 1:1.

Epoxy resins are widely used in various fields due to their excellent thermal, mechanical and chemical properties. In order to improve the mechanical properties of the epoxy composition after curing, various materials are mixed in the epoxy resin. Among the nano materials, CNT is the most widely used. However, CNT has limitations in terms of manufacturing process and manufacturing cost. Therefore, there is a growing interest in naturally occurring HNTs having similar structure to that of CNT. In this study, the thermal and mechanical properties of epoxy compositions containing HNTs treated with two types of silane compounds were investigated. The mechanical properties of silane-treated HNT were measured by using a universal testing machine. The differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and thermomechanical analysis (TMA) were used to measure thermal properties. As a result of the above tests, when the HNT was surface-treated with aminosilane, the tensile strength of the epoxy composition containing the HNT was higher than that of the epoxy composition containing epoxy silane treated HNT. The linear thermal expansion coefficients (CTE) obtained from the thermomechanical analysis of the two epoxy compositions for the comparison of dimensional stability showed that the HNT composition treated with aminosilane showed a lower value of CTE than that of epoxy composition including the pristine HNT.
Recently, the amount of thermosetting plastic wastes has increased with the production of reinforced plastic composites and causes serious environmental problems. The epoxy resins, one of the versatile thermosetting plastics with excellent properties, cannot be melted down and remolded as what is done in the thermoplastic industry. In this research, a series of experiments that decompose epoxy resin and recover carbon fibers from carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites applied to railway vehicles was performed. We experimentally examined various decomposition processes and compared their decomposition efficiencies and mechanical property of recovered carbon fibers. For the prevention of tangle of recovered carbon fibers, each composites specimen was fixed with a Teflon supporter and no mechanical mixing was applied. Decomposition products were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC-MS), and universal testing machine (UTM). Carbon fibers could be completely recovered from decomposition process using nitric acid aqueous solution, liquid-phase thermal cracking and pyrolysis. The tensile strength losses of the recovered carbon fibers were less than 4%.
In this work, diglycidylether of bisphenol-S (DGEBS) epoxy resin was prepared by alkaline condensation of bisphenol-S (BPS) with epichlorohydrin (ECH) in the presence of NaOH catalyst. The structure of the synthesized DGEBS epoxy resin was confirmed by IR, NMR spectra, and elemental analysis. The curing reaction and glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of DGEBS epoxy resin cured with phthalic anhydride (PA) and tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (THPA) at curing agents were studied by dynamic differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The thermal stability of the cured specimen was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). As a result, the activation energy ($E_a$) of DGEBS/PA system was higher than that of DGEBS/THPA system, whereas $T_g$, initial decomposed temperature (IDT), and decomposition activation energy ($E_t$) of DGEBS/PA were lower than those of DGEBS/THPA. This was probably due to the fact that the crosslinking density of DGEBS/THPA was increased by ring strain of curing agent.
The autotransformer currently used on the electric railway system is made of class A insulation material and uses the paper insulation method. As a power converter supplying power to the trolley wire, the autotransformer is one of critical equipment in the railway system. In the autotransformer, load irregularly changes and overload often occurs. These cause overheating of the autotransformer and facilitate deterioration of the autotransformer resulting in burnout accidents due to insulation breakdown. Also, the current autotransformer has poor insolation and short-circuit strength which often badly affect the service life of the transformer, and needs to improve its quality urgently. To overcome one of existing shortcomings of the mold transformer, manufacturers use epoxy resins that have superior flame retardancy to get rid of fro and explosion possibilities during accidents. Currently, new mold transformers are used in indoor distribution facilities with fire-fighting equipments. Coils molded in epoxy resins do not have their insulation performance compromised by humidity, dust, etc enabling easy inspection and maintenance. Comparing to the oil immersed transformer, the mold transformer does not have any concern about environmental pollutions by oil leak or replacement Therefore, to reduce breakdowns and improve reliability of the autotransformer, it is necessary to develop a new mold autotransformer with low loss suitable for our environment to suppress breakdowns of the autotransformer and improve the reliability. This study is about development of a low-loss mold autotransformer necessitated by reasons mentioned earlier.
Bisphenol A(BPA), known as a typical endocrine disruptor, has been used commercially and widely for plastics and epoxy resins. BPA-based plastic is used extensively for the production of water bottles, food containers, CDs, DVDs, and panels that can be applied in construction. Epoxy resins containing BPA are used for coatings on the insides of water pipes, food cans, and thermal papers that are used in sales receipts. As its estrogenic effects and other adverse health effects have published, BPA has been regulated in many countries, and there have been efforts made to replace BPA. Other bisphenols substitutes such as bisphenol S(BPS) and bisphenol F(BPF) have been used. Currently, BPS- and BPF-based products labeled BPA-free products have been widely consumed. Because of structural similarities with BPA, however, these alternatives also show endocrine disruption effects like BPA, and many studies on adverse health effects of these alternatives are being reported. In this review, we describe the adverse health effects of bisphenols and the current status of regulation.

Flame-retardant vinyl ester (VE) resin films were developed from the mixtures of brominated and non-brominated epoxy resins via esterification with methacrylic acid without reactive diluents. The films were used to fabricate carbon fiber (CF) prepregs via a hot melt impregnation process. The viscosity of VE resins suitable for film production was optimized by mixing low-viscosity bisphenol-A and high-viscosity brominated bisphenol-A epoxy precursors. Increasing the bromine content of the cured VE resin further increased the limited oxygen index (LOI) (39%), storage modulus (2.4 GPa) at 25℃ and residual carbonization (16.1%) values compared to non-brominated VE. Manual layup of as-prepared VE prepregs with subsequent curing led to the successful fabrication of CF-reinforced composites with high tensile and flexural strength. The results from the study hold high promise for a styrene-free, environmentally friendly VE composite process in the future.
Epoxy resin has superior durability and adhesive strength and proper physical strength so that it is used to diversity materials for multi-purposes. However epoxy resin is hardly removed after hardening specially once it is applied to artefacts, it is difficult to remove them under re-conservation. This paper is an experimental study on removing epoxy resin applied to iron objects using Nd:YAG laser cleaning system. Tests conducted in this study investigated how increasing laser energy and pulses would give effect on samples. The samples were prepared in a way that epoxy resin, itself pure and one which was mixed with pigment and they were applied to iron coupons and corroded iron coupons respectively. As a result of experiment, pure epoxy resin applied to corroded iron coupons was ablated at high laser energy but epoxy resin applied to iron coupons and mixing with pigment were not ablated but discolored and bubbled due to laser-induced heat generation. Results of FT-IR showed no component alteration of shifted resins and no residues on the surfaces ablated by laser irradiation. From SEM-EDS for removed surfaces, the debris from epoxy resin and melting iron was observed. Therefore, this study demonstrated the possibilities and limitations for laser cleaning to remove epoxy resin from iron objects.
