  • There are numerous and evidential findings that TCDD (2, 3, 7, 8-tetrachlorodibenzo-Pdioxin, or dioxin) is a potential carcinogen and general toxin in rodents. flowever, human risk assessment for dioxin exposure has been a topic of debate, owing in part to the large animal interspecies differences in its toxicity. We review dioxin-related reports indicating its toxicity, toxic effects in animal, and human epidemiologic findings. The intent of this paper does not provide a causal inference about chronic human diseases related to dioxin exposure. This summary would give a valuable clue for a researcher to conduct or design a further dioxin-related study.

  • The prevalence of normal occlusion and malocclusion was assessed by Angle's Classification method for 8989 school students at 7-22 years in Seoul. The occurrence of malocclusion and the need-for orthodontic treatment was 61 per cent among them. Results indicated no significant differences between the sexes for the occlusal relationships of the mandible to the maxille. The prevalence of Class I, Class II, and Class III malocclusion in all malocclusion was shown to be Class I, 45.7 per cent; Class II, 7.6 per cent; and Class III, 7.9 per cent. Class II Division 1 was observed to occur four times frequently compared to Class II Division 2 in Class II malocclusions. Class III malocclusion was shown to occur more frequently compared that of Caucasians.

  • Negative life events, self-esteem, perceived social support, and maladjustment were studied longitudinally among late elementary children. Subjects were 241 boys and girls for depression and 258 for antisocial behavior. The instruments were the Adolescent Perceived Events Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Social Support Scale for Children, the Revised Korean Version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies' Depression Scale, and the Antisocial Behavior Scale. The results showed that the way variables were reciprocally related to one another in patterns over a period of one year differed by internal and external adjustment. For depression, depression at Time 1 had effects on self-esteem, social support, and depression at Time 2. For antisocial behavior, negative life events at Time 1 influenced negative life events, self-esteem, social support, and antisocial behavior at Time 2. The findings were discussed in relation to the effects of negative life events, self-esteem, and perceived social support on maladjustment.

  • Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute, self-limited vasculitis of unknown etiology that occurs predominantly in infants and young children. Initially described in 1967 by Dr. Tomisaku Kawasaki, it is now the most common cause of acquired heart disease among children in developed nations. Although KD has been reported across all racial and ethnic groups, the incidence of KD is more common among Asians, which suggests differences of race-specific susceptibility. The prevalence of the disease varies considerably among different Asian countries, and there is a higher rate of KD reported in Asian countries such as Japan and Korea than in other countries. In Korea, a nationwide epidemiological study has been conducted every three years since the 1990s by the Korean Pediatric Heart Association to determine the epidemiologic patterns and incidence rate of KD in Korea. It was thus found in a recent survey (2003-2005) that the average annual incidence of 105.0/100,000 Korean children under the age of five years was the second-highest reported rate in the world, after Japan.

  • This study was performed to investigate the rabies surveillance in Gangwon-do from 1997 to 2001. Of 185 laboratory submissions for rabies diagnosis, 65(35.1%) cases were determined to be infected with the rabies virus. Annual incidence of animal rabies was 10 cases in 1997, 20 cases in 1998, 16 cases in 1999, 3 cases in 2000, and 16 cases in 2001, respectively. The total number of the reported cases were increased 382% compared with that of the previous period from 1993 to 1996(7 cases). The relative contributions of infected animals in this period were as follows: cattles(24 cases), dogs(26 cases), and raccoons(15 cases). Rabies outbreak in raccoon were steadily expanded. Epidemiologic surveillance showed the rabies outbreaks spreaded to the southern area in Gangwon-do. All rabies cases were showed positive results to rabies tests such as clinical signs, histopathological findings, indirect flourescent antibody test, and mouse inoculation test. Further studies such as genetic and phylogenetic analysis of the isolates should be performed in order to figure out accurate rabies outbreak.

  • The genus Vibrio contains some of the most important intestinal pathogens of humans, including Vibrio cholerae, the cause of epidemic Asiatic cholera. A group of organisms which have been reffered to as the non-agglutinating vibrio (NAG) do not agglutinate in the Vibrio cholerae 0 group 1 antisera, but are indistinguishable from the 0-1 group both chemically and genetically. Non-O-l Vibrio cholerae can cause isolated as well as focal outbreaks of diarrhea, but the volume of fluid loss does not approach that of classic cholera, and the disease is usually self-limiting. These free-living organisms are found world-widely distributed in the environment including sewage, contaminated water, estuaries, seafood and animals. These strains involved in several cases were isolated from the environment and some patients of diarrhea, and a few epidemiologic reports indicated the wide distribution of the strains throughout the country, giving an attention to the role the organisms may play in an outbreak of diarrhea in Korea. More research on the epidemiology, serologic typing and virulence of the group of organisms, should be, therefore, done to obtain a complete understanding of their role in human disease.

  • Fifty chemicals are currently classified as human carcinogens based on epidemiologic and animal data. Humans are daily exposed to them from various sources of exposure via inhalation, dermal contact and oral ingestion. To reduce cancer risk to man, these human carcinogens should be appropriately regulated and monitored environmentally or biologically for routine human cancer risk assessment. A number of mathematical risk assessment models have been introduced, but any realistic and relevant model system is not available for humans. A mechanistic process for human cancer risk assessment was comprehensively reviewed and problems were also discussed. Here, a new conceptual approach using epidemiology and biological human monitoring was suggested for the most relevant method to study human cancer risk assessment.

  • This study focused on factors influencing Internal and external problem (depression and antisocial) behavior among late-elementary children. Subjects were 481 boys and girls enrolled in the fourth. fifth. and sixth grades of public school. The contribution of grade. sex. stress, self-esteem. and social support from parents, teachers, and friends as well as school performance were studied. The instruments were the Adolescent Perceived Events Scale, the Self-Esteem Scale, the Social Support Scale for Children, the Revised Korean Version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies' Depression Scale and Antisocial Behavior Scale. Results indicated that sex, stress, self-esteem, and the support of parents, teachers and friends reduced the level of depression. Grade, sex, stress, self-esteem, and teachers' support were related to the level of antisocial behavior. The results were discussed in terms of the effects of stress, personal and social resources, and school achievement on depression and antisocial behavior.

  • The occlusal patterns and profiles of the primary dentition were studied by oral examination from 3 to 6 year-old children (200 boys, 200 girls) in Kwangju city. The results were as follows; 1. In sagittal primary canine relationship, Class 1 pattern (74.75 %) was prevalent. 2. In sagittal primary molar relationship, Class 1 pattern (56 %) was prevalent. 3. In profile view, straight profile (77%) was prevalent. 4. In comparison of relationship between primary canine relationship, primary molar relationship and profile, Class 1 pattern-Class 1 pattern-Straight profile (43.14 %) was prevalent.
