We attempted to investigate molecular mechanisms underlying phenotypic change of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) by determining signaling molecules involved in chemokine production. Treatment of human aortic smooth muscle cells (HAoSMCs) with thrombin resulted not only in elevated transcription of the (C-C motif) ligand 11 (CCL11) gene but also in enhanced secretion of CCL11 protein. Co-treatment of HAoSMCs with GF109230X, an inhibitor of protein kinase C, or GW5074, an inhibitor of Raf-1 kinase, caused inhibition of ERK1/2 phosphorylation and significantly attenuated expression of CCL11 at transcriptional and protein levels induced by thrombin. Both Akt phosphorylation and CCL11 expression induced by thrombin were attenuated in the presence of pertussis toxin (PTX), an inhibitor of Gi protein-coupled receptor, or LY294002, a PI3K inhibitor. In addition, thrombin-induced production of CCL11 was significantly attenuated by pharmacological inhibition of Akt or MEK which phosphorylates ERK1/2. These results indicate that thrombin is likely to promote expression of CCL11 via PKC/Raf-1/ERK1/2 and PTX-sensitive protease-activated receptors /PI3K/Akt pathways in HAoSMCs. We propose that multiple signaling pathways are involved in change of VSMCs to a secretory phenotype.
SINE-VNTR-Alu (SVA) elements are present in hominoid primates and are divided into 6 subfamilies (SVA-A to SVA-F) and active in the human population. Using a bioinformatic tool, 22 SVA element-associated genes are identified in the human genome. In an analysis of genomic structure, SVA elements are detected in the 5′ untranslated region (UTR) of HGSNAT (SVA-B), MRGPRX3 (SVA-D), HYAL1 (SVA-F), TCHH (SVA-F), and ATXN2L (SVA-F) genes, while some elements are observed in the 3′UTR of SPICE1 (SVA-B), TDRKH (SVA-C), GOSR1 (SVA-D), BBS5 (SVA-D), NEK5 (SVA-D), ABHD2 (SVA-F), C1QTNF7 (SVA-F), ORC6L (SVA-F), TMEM69 (SVA-F), and CCDC137 (SVA-F) genes. They could contribute to exon extension or supplying poly A signals. LEPR (SVA-C), ALOX5 (SVA-D), PDS5B (SVA-D), and ABCA10 (SVA-F) genes also showed alternative transcripts by SVA exonization events. Dominant expression of HYAL1_SVA appeared in lung tissues, while HYAL1_noSVA showed ubiquitous expression in various human tissues. Expression of both transcripts (TDRKH_SVA and TDRKH_noSVA) of the TDRKH gene appeared to be ubiquitous. Taken together, these data suggest that SVA elements cause transcript isoforms that contribute to modulation of gene regulation in various human tissues.
In order to establish tissue lipid status in animal on feeding of various dietary fat and oils, each group of rats was fed a semisynthetic diet containing 10%(w/w) mackerel oil (MO), eel oil (EO), soybean oil (SO), rapeseed oil (RO) or beef tallow (BT) for 1, 2 and 4 weeks, After each feeding period, levels of cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid were measured in serum. Fatty acid ${\leftarrow}$ composition was also investigated in serum and tissue lipids. Levels of total serum cholesterol were lower but HDL-cholesterol were higher in fish oil groups, which resulted in significantly higher ratio of HDL to total cholesterol in the fish oil groups. Fish oil groups, in general, also had lower levels of serum triglyceride and phospholipid than other groups, but S0 group maintained as low phospholipid levrl as fish oil groups. Fatty acid composition of dietary fat was reflected in all the tissues investigated but with varying degrees. Very long chain fatty acids, specific components exclusively found in fish oils were most well reflected in liver and relatively well in serum, whereas linoleic acid and erucic acid of SO and RO in the diet were better shown up in heart and adipose tissue. It attracted a particular attention that major proportions of long chain monoenoic acids $(C_{22:1})$ occurring both in MO and RO were detected separately in liver and heart plus adipose tissue, the result of which strongly indicates that there is a significant difference in metabolism between isomers $(C_{22:1}\;w\;11\;and\;C_{22:1}\;w\;9,\;respectively)$. It is suggested from this study that differences in lipid status as well as in the levels of serum lipids result from uniqueness in metabolism of each different fatty acid and give rise to distinguishable change in serum lipoprotein pattern, followed by diet with different fat sources.
Ionic conductivities of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based electrolytes are in a considerable inconsistency in many papers, varying more than three orders of magnitude for just same compositions. In PEO-salt-ceramic composite electrolytes, it has been also reported that the conductivity can be variant by almost three orders of magnitude according to thermal treatment and it has been regarded as a consequence of polymer-ceramic particle interaction. In this paper, we present a more systematic study on the change of ionic conductivity for ceramic-free PEO$_{10}$LiClO$_4$ polymer electrolytes, and found that the ionic conductivity can be variant more than hundred times according to thermal history. The slow recrystallization kinetics of PEO polymer is discussed to be responsible for the thermal history effect. Present results reveal that the effect of ceramic filler is not a main cause of the conductivity relaxation phenomenon.n.
We demonstrate self-starting passIve mode locking of a Cr:LiSAF laser, using a SCIDlconduclor Saturable Absorber Mirror (SESAM), Two high-power red semiconductor lasers (Coherent S-67-500C-100-H) of wavelength 667 nm and maximum power of 500 mW were used as pump lasers, The cavity has 10 cm radius-ai-curvature folding minors, two SF 10 prisms, a 99% reflectivity output coupler and a SESAM at dIe focus of a 10 cm radIus-at-curvature mirror. We used the laser crystal in BrewsterBrewster shape with 1 5% $Cr^{+3}$ ion concentration and the length of 6 mm, An X-shaped resonator was used to compensate the astigmatism induced by tile crystal. The structure of the SESAM cOllSists of 30 pmr of $AlAs/Al_{0.15}Ga_{0.85}As$ layer, wi1l1 a 10 nm GaAs quantum well situated in the topmost layer Output spectra were centeled at 833 nm, with 4 nm spectral bandwidth and pulse width was measured to be 220 fs, Output power of 3 mW is obtained at a pump power of 800 mW. 00 mW.

A nonthermal plasma reactor in conjunction with a tubular type with a ferroelectric (high-dielectric ceramic) pellet layer was designed and constructed. $SrBiTaO_9$ (SBT) pellets with 2.0 mm in diameter were held within the tube arrangement by two metal mesh electrodes (20 mm separation) connected to a high-voltage AC power supply. The dielectric constant of SBT pellets was 150 at room temperature and 500 at curie temperature ($335^{\circ}C$). The generation rate of ozone in the plasma reactor almost linearly increased with increasing applied voltage. In the case of the plasma reactor packed with SBT pellets the generation rate of ozone sharply increased at the applied voltage more than 20 kV. The ozone generation rate at the negative corona discharge was higher than that of the positive corona discharge. However, the destruction efficiency of toluene and methylene chloride was not increased in proportion to ozone concentration.
The most common anatomic variant seen in donor kidneys for renal transplantation is the presence of multiple renal arteries, which can cause an increased risk of complications. Accessory renal arteries should be anastomosed to the proper source arteries to improve renal perfusion via the appropriate vascular reconstruction techniques. In microsurgery, 2 kinds of vascular augmentation methods, known as 'supercharging' and 'turbocharging,' have been introduced to ensure vascular perfusion in the transferred flap. Supercharging uses a distant source of the vessels, while turbocharging uses vascular sources within the same flap territory. These technical concepts can also be applied in renal transplantation, and in this report, we describe 2 patients who underwent procedures using supercharging and turbocharging. In one case, the ipsilateral deep inferior epigastric artery was transposed to the accessory renal artery (supercharging), and in the other case, the accessory renal artery was anastomosed to the corresponding main renal artery with a vascular graft (turbocharging). The transplanted kidneys showed good perfusion and proper function. No cases of renal failure, hypertension, rejection, or urologic complications were observed. These microsurgical techniques can be safely utilized for renal transplantation with donor kidneys that have multiple arteries with a lower complication rate and better outcome.
G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are part of multi-protein networks called 'receptosomes'. These GPCR interacting proteins (GIPs) in the receptosomes control the targeting, trafficking and signaling of GPCRs. PDZ domain proteins constitute the largest protein family among the GIPs, and the predominant function of the PDZ domain proteins is to assemble signaling pathway components into close proximity by recognition of the last four C-terminal amino acids of GPCRs. We present here a machine learning based approach for the identification of GPCR-binding PDZ domain proteins. In order to characterize the network of interactions between amino acid residues that contribute to the stability of the PDZ domain-ligand complex and to encode the complex into a feature vector, amino acid contact matrices and physicochemical distance matrix were constructed and adopted. This novel machine learning based method displayed high performance for the identification of PDZ domain-ligand interactions and allowed the identification of novel GPCR-PDZ domain protein interactions.
Application of pheasant and soybean extracts to improve the quality of baechu kimchi was attempted. Pheasant and soybean extracts at various combinatory concentrations were added into baechu kimchi and fermented for 24 days at $10^{\circ}C$. Assay was performed on salinity, acidity, bacterial growth, sensory evaluations, and physical properties. The pH decreased, and acidity increased by fermentation time. The optimum pH 4.2 was reached within $12{\sim}15\;days$, and optimum acidity was reached within $6{\sim}9\;days$. The number of lactic acid bacteria was increased by fermentation time. Score of intensity characteristics in color. crispness carbonated taste, and overall quality were higher for the pheasant and soybean extracts added baechu kimchi(B) than for the control product(S). The result of L and a value of baechu kimchi were Higher in treatment than in control as fermentation time increased. The hardness of baechu kimchi with pheasant and soybean extracts(B) were higher than those of control(S).

This paper deals with the Harmonics on the power lines in the computer room. The voltage and current at each phase of electric power from UPS to the load must be ensured less than 5% distortion rates according to the regulation terms from KEPC(Korea Electric Power Corporation) and the KSC4310 Uninterruptible Power Supply regulation. However, measurements show that the voltage distortion rate conforms those regulations but the current distortion rate exceeds much the limit. This current distortion is stabilized from 34.98% to 15.22% nearly half by an AC current filter.
