In Korea nearly all the subjects teach environmental education in the secondary school. In addition we have a separate environmental education subject (environmental subject). This could be a very strong point in the Korean environmental education. The environmental subject and the other subjects, however, overlap in teaching materials and methods in almost all aspects. Because of this, the environmental subject has not done its job effectively, and is sometimes considered as an unnecessary surplus. To effectively play its own role in environmental education, the subject should focus on environmental issues rather than on contamination, which it is focusing on now. The contamination-focused environmental subject simply teaches nearly the same contents that the other subjects teach. In addition, it makes students visit actual sites related to pollution in order to encourage them to be aware of the severity of pollution. However, it has difficulty in teaching how environmental problems occur in a society and how the social decisions are made to resolve the problems. To overcome this difficulty the environmental subject should employ discussion classes more substantially, which let students investigate social aspects as well as scientific aspects of environmental problems and make integrated decisions through interdisciplinary approaches, to make students understand social mechanisms of environmental problems. The subject should focus on teaching what factors influence producers' and consumers' behavior and what factors they should consider when they have to make decisions on environmental issues. It should leave teaching technical knowledge and skill to the other subjects, and train students by the integrated approach which makes them see technology through a sociologist's eye. Although such integrated approach is emphasized in the environmental subject, environmental teachers should be trained to understand technological knowledge and skill in profound depth.
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether elementary school parents' environmental literacy varied according to independent variables, to verify specific variables that affected their environmental literacy, and to analyze the correlation between elementary school students' and their parents' environmental literacy. Twelve elementary schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi-Do were chosen for purposive sampling. 342 questionnaires were used for analysis among the 350 questionnaires collected during the study, and their environmental literacy was measured through 55 questions consisted of 12 items for knowledge category, 22 for attitude category, 5 for behavior category, and 3 for skills category with 16 demographic variables. Statistical analysis was conducted on each of the variables that make up environmental literacy through mean t-test, F-distribution, Scheffe test, and Pearson correlation. The results of this study were as follows. (1) there is the difference according to age and career in parent's actual environmental literacy, but there is no difference in geneder, birthplace, residential type, religion and income. The parents in forties scored significantly higher than parents in thirties in subdomains of environmental skill and environmental interest in environmental literacy. And the parents with bachelor's degree scored significantly higher than parents with at least a high school diploma in subdomains of ecological knowledge, knowledge on environmental problems & issue, environmental skill and environmental behavior. (2) the most influential media on parents' environmental literacy is TV, then newspaper, internet and book follow. (3) the correlation between environmental crisis and environmental interest is the highest, but the mainly negative correlation is analysed between knowledge subdomains and other subdomains. (4) there is the correlation between elementary school students' and their parents' environmental literacy.
Recently, the gold leaching technologies draw much interest to recover gold from low grade ores. Current leaching processes mostly use cyanide as the leaching agent, due to its high leaching efficiencies and cost-effectiveness. However, use of cyanide is severely problematic, because of toxicity and thereby environmental risks, and requires strict regulations and environmental management. Especially, this issue becomes further apparent when cyanide should be applied for dump or heap leaching for low cost gold recovery along with recent trends. To resolve this issue, the alternative leaching processes using thiosulfate or halogen compounds, instead of cyanide, have been studied and developed but there have been lots of difficulties toward commercialization, and therefore further research should be conducted. The commercialization of dump or heap bioleaching technologies should be urgently required for effective direct biogenic gold recovery from low grade ores or tailings without use of cyanide.
Since its foundation in September 1986, the Korean Society of Water and Wastewater has made a significant contribution to the water sector in Korea over the past 30 years. The 30th anniversary commemorative committee reviewed the establishment goal of the society and its development strategy for organization and present the "Future Vision of Korean Society of Water and Wastewater" for the next 30 years. The future vision of the society is defined as "Aiming for the healthy life and preservation of the environment through the development of water and wastewater technology and experience". Promotion strategies for implementing the future vision are as follows: 1. Leading water and wastewater technology, 2. Develop water and wastewater policy, 3. Strengthen water and wastewater capacity, 4. Reinforce institutional governance. The driving target to be achieved through the implementation strategy is "To lead the global standards of water and wastewater." We also presented national issue, policy issue, and technical issues in the water sector. Climate change, unified Korea, water safety, and national welfare were selected as national issues related to water and wastewater. This approach was taken from the perspective of policy consumers such as citizens, civil society, experts, and local government/industry. By presenting policy issues and technical issues that address national issues, authors have proposed a future policy direction for the Korean Water and Wastewater Society to make critical contributions to national development.

As remote sensing and GIS have been considered to be essential technologies for disasters information production, researches on developing methods for analyzing spatial data, and developing new technologies for such purposes, have been actively conducted. Especially, it is assumed that the use of remote sensing and GIS for disaster management will continue to develop thanks to the launch of recent satellite constellations, the use of various remote sensing platforms, the improvement of acquired data processing and storage capacity, and the advancement of artificial intelligence technology. This spatial issue presents 10 research papers regarding ship detection, building information extraction, ocean environment monitoring, flood monitoring, forest fire detection, and decision making using remote sensing and GIS technologies, which can be applied at the disaster prediction, monitoring and response stages. It is anticipated that the papers published in this special issue could be a valuable reference for developing technologies for disaster management and academic advancement of related fields.
As satellite technology progresses, a growing number of satellites-like CubeSat and radar satellites-are available with a higher spectral and spatial resolutions than previous. National initiatives used to be the main force behind satellite development, but current trendsindicate that private enterprises are also actively exploring and developing new satellite technologies. This special issue examines the recent research results and advanced technology in remote sensing approaches for Earth environment analysis. These results provide important information for the development of satellite sensors in the future and are of great interest to researchers working with artificial intelligence in thisfield. The special issue introduces the latest advances in remote sensing technology and highlights studies that make use of data to monitor and forecast Earth's environment. The objective is to provide direction for the future of remote sensing research.
This study examined the educational effects of journal writing on environmental literacy of elementary students. Thirty-one 3rd grade students were involved in the journal writing which is considered as one of the most frequently performed writing activities in elementary students. Topics for the journal writing were chosen from a textbook on the environment. Before and after the journal writing, an instrument was used to measure the environmental literacy of the students. The environmental literacy instrument was originally developed by Jin (2004) then were modified by Kim (2005) for elementary students. The results of this study are as follows. The environmental literacy of the students, on average, was improved from 140.84 (74.5%) to 161.84 (85.6%) after the journal writing and the difference was statistically significant(t=7.46, p<.001). The environmental literacy scores were significantly improved in every variable after the journal writing: ecological knowledge(t=3.60, p<.01), environmental sensitivity(t=2.54, p<.05), knowledge of environmental issues(t=3.11, p<.01), environmental attitude(t=5.92, p<.001), environmental concern(t=5.27, p<.001), sense of environmental crisis(t=2.97, p<.01), environmental issue investigation and action strategy knowledge (t=2.34, p<.05), environmental skill(t=4.86, p<.001), locus of control(t=5.63, p<.001), and responsible environmental behavior(t=4.64, p<.001). This study also shows that improvement of the students was statistically significant in each of the four levels of goals in environmental education: EE goal level I (t=4.22, p<.001), level II (t=7.53, p<.001), level III(t=5.01, p<.001), and level IV(t=5.46, p<.001). The results imply that the journal writing on the environment is effective in cultivating elementary students' environmental literacy and in achieving goals in environmental education.
Animals are one of the important memberships of the food chain. The low-efficiency rule of nutrient transfer from one member to the next in the food chain determines the low efficiency of animal agriculture for human food. On the average, about 20% feed proteins and 15% feed energy can be converted into edible nutrients for humans. The rest proportion of feed nutrients is exposed to the environment. Environmental pollution, therefore, is inevitable as animal agriculture grows intensively and extensively. The over-loading of the environment by nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus from animal manure results in soil and water spoilage. The emission of gases like $CH_2$, $CO_2$, $SO_2$, NO, $NO_2$ by animals are one of the contributors for the acidification of the environment and global warming. The inefficient utilization of natural resources and the probable unsafety of animal products to human health are also a critical environmental issue. Improving the conversion efficiency of nutrients in the food chain is the fundamental strategy for solving environmental issues. Specifically in animal agriculture, the strategy includes the improvements of animal genotypes, nutritional and feeding management, animal health, housing systems and waste disposal programs. Animal nutrition science plays a unique and irreplaceable role in the control of nutrient input and output in either products or wastes. Several nutritional methods are proved to be effective in alleviating environmental pollution. A lot of nutritional issues, however, remain to be further researched for the science of animal nutrition to be a strong helper for sustainability of animal agriculture.
Rapid economic growth brought material affluence and convenience, but it also has caused a negative issue, such as environmental damage. Therefore, this research holds the purpose of grasping structural influencing relationship of environmental awareness of cook, which is taking an important role in food safety among workers in hotel restaurants with eco-friendly attitude and food safety pursuit behavior. To achieve the purpose, collected materials were tested for the fidelity, organic causation and control effect, using Structural Equation Modeling for frequency analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, credibility analysis and hypothesis testing with SPSS (V23.0) and AMOS (V21.0) programs. Environmental awareness of hotel cook has causation with eco-friendly attitude, and the attitude has meaningful causation with food safety pursuit behavior. That is, it proved that cooks are taking care of their job carefully from the pre-cooking stage while most of people ignore the storing stage. The result shows not only hotel's own training session, cook's level of consciousness on the food safety and they are working with high sense of responsibility. The limitation of this research is that it only conducted with cooks of deluxe hotels in Busan, and it could not include various variables about environmental awareness. Therefore, it is expected that the lacking contents to be dealt by a follow-up study.
Recently environmental problem becomes such a big issue all over the world that the necessity and importance of the environmental education in school has been simultaneously emphasized. While diverse methods for the environmental education have been researched, this paper, especially focused on a teaching-learning model called GBS (Goal-based scenario), aims to provide a new learner-centered approach for the environmental education. For this purpose, this paper first briefly presents two theoretical backgrounds of GBS (i.e., constructivism and Schank's dynamic memory theory), which is followed by specific and concrete strategies and methods of how to apply GBS in class for the teacher. GBS(Goal-Based Scenario) is a learner-centered model in which learners are presented with a reality-based scenario (or task or problem) and go through several stages of 'missions' to get to a final solution of the given scenario. GBS, while completely resonant with other constructivist learning models in terms of learner-centered approaches, is distinctive from others, when it supplies more specific, structured guides of learning, called 'missions', to the students throughout the whole learning process. In a words, GBS ought to be recognized as an unique learner-centered model compromising the contradictory concepts of 'learner control' and 'structure and specifics' in learning environments still without any damage of constructivist learning principles.
