Rainfed Areas and Animal Agriculture in Asia: The Wanting Agenda for Transforming Productivity Growth and Rural Poverty

  • The importance of rainfed areas and animal agriculture on productivity enhancement and food security for economic rural growth in Asia is discussed in the context of opportunities for increasing potential contribution from them. The extent of the rainfed area of about 223 million hectares and the biophysical attributes are described. They have been variously referred to inter alia as fragile, marginal, dry, waste, problem, threatened, range, less favoured, low potential lands, forests and woodlands, including lowlands and uplands. Of these, the terms less favoured areas (LFAs), and low or high potential are quite widely used. The LFAs are characterised by four key features: i) very variable biophysical elements, notably poor soil quality, rainfall, length of growing season and dry periods, ii) extreme poverty and very poor people who continuously face hunger and vulnerability, iii) presence of large populations of ruminant animals (buffaloes, cattle, goats and sheep), and iv) have had minimum development attention and an unfinished wanting agenda. The rainfed humid/sub-humid areas found mainly in South East Asia (99 million ha), and arid/semi-arid tropical systems found in South Asia (116 million ha) are priority agro-ecological zones (AEZs). In India for example, the ecosystem occupies 68% of the total cultivated area and supports 40% of the human and 65% of the livestock populations. The area also produces 4% of food requirements. The biophysical and typical household characteristics, agricultural diversification, patterns of mixed farming and cropping systems are also described. Concerning animals, their role and economic importance, relevance of ownership, nomadic movements, and more importantly their potential value as the entry point for the development of LFAs is discussed. Two examples of demonstrated success concern increasing buffalo production for milk and their expanded use in semi-arid AEZs in India, and the integration of cattle and goats with oil palm in Malaysia. Revitalised development of the LFAs is justified by the demand for agricultural land to meet human needs e.g. housing, recreation and industrialisation; use of arable land to expand crop production to ceiling levels; increasing and very high animal densities; increased urbanisation and pressure on the use of available land; growing environmental concerns of very intensive crop production e.g. acidification and salinisation with rice cultivation; and human health risks due to expanding peri-urban poultry and pig production. The strategies for promoting productivity growth will require concerted R and D on improved use of LFAs, application of systems perspectives for technology delivery, increased investments, a policy framework and improved farmer-researcher-extension linkages. These challenges and their resolution in rainfed areas can forcefully impact on increased productivity, improved livelihoods and human welfare, and environmental sustainability in the future.

액상분뇨 이용 수준에 대한 현장적용 연구 (A Practice-Oriented Study on Application Level of Animal Slurry)

  • 장기간 액상분뇨 시용으로 토양에 질소가 과다하게 축적된 독일 남서부에 위치한 알고이 지방 2개 축산 농가 포장에서 환경과 자연을 보호하면서 사료작물을 재매하는 기술을 확립하기 위하여 1987년에서 1993년까지 7년간 관행 액비 시용구와 액상분뇨 감량 시용구, 무비구를 두어 액상분뇨 시용수준이 초지 생산성에 미치는 현장 적용실험을 실시한 결과를 요약하면 아래와 같다. 1. 7년간 액상분뇨를 사용하지 않는 무비구 토양은 pH와 인산, 가리 함량이 매우 낮아졌다. 액상분뇨 경감시용구 토양은 관행액비시용구보다 인산, 가리 함량이 약간 낮아졌다. 2. 초지의 식생 구성요소와 품질은 액비시용량 경감에 의하여 부정적으로 변화되지 않았다. 3 액비 경감시용구의 건물수량은 관행액비 시용구와 비교하여 지역에 따라 전혀 감소가 없거나 14% 감소되었다. 무비구의 건물수량은 지역에 따라 관행 액비시용구에 비하여 각각 14%,44% 감소되었다. 4. 장기간 액상분뇨 시용으로 토양이 비옥한 지역에서 액비 시용수준을 30∼40% 경감시키면 목초생산산성이나 식생에 전혀 지장을 주지 않고 목초의 품질면에서는 조단백질 함량을 낮고 조섬유 함량이 다소 높아 긍적적인 효과로 평가되기 때문에 이 지역의 관행액비 시용량은 감소되어야 할 것으로 결론 내려진다

소양면 지역사회 환경기초조사 (A Basie Community Health Survey in Rural Korea (Soyang-Myun))

  • 1. Introduction Community medicine with the concept of comprehensive medical care and an ideal medical care delivery system not only for an individual or family but for the whole community has emerged. In April 1970, the Presbyterian Medical Center started a hospital based community health service project in order to improve the health of the people in rural areas. Prior to commencing a comprehensive medical care system, a family survey was needed. The major objective of this survey was to obtain information concerning the people and their environment so as to be able to plan and implement a comprehensive medical care program in Soyang-Myun. 2. Survey Method An interview using a family record form was carried out for each household. This family record form was designed to get information about demography, family planning, environmental sanitation and vital statistics. Prior to beginning, the members of the survey team were trained in interviewing techniques for three days. The team consisted of a public health nurse, four nurse-aides, a sanitarian and four health extension workers who are working in our project, The survey was carried out during the period November 1971 to March 1972. 3. Project area 1) Population of Soyang-Myun was 11,668; male, 5,962 and female, 5,706. 철원지역에서 가축분뇨 발효액비 시용수준이 벼의 수량과 품질에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Application Rates with Swine Liquid Manure on Rice Yield and Quality in Cheorwon Region)

  • 양돈분뇨 발효액비 시용량이 벼 생육과 수량에 미치는 영향을 구명하기 위하여 양돈분뇨 발효액비를 벼 재배 질소 추천시비량인 11kg N/10a를 기준으로 하여 100%, 120%, 150%, 180% 수준으로 처리 하여 전량 기비로 시용하였다. 1. 양돈분뇨 발효액비 100%, 120% 시용구는 생육초기 벼의 분얼수 및 초장에서 양호하였다. 양돈분뇨 발효액비 150%, 180% 시용구는 분얼수가 많고 초장이 큰 과번무 상태를 나타내었다. 벼의 수량은 양돈분뇨 발효액비 120% 시용구는 양돈분뇨 발효액비 100% 시용구 대비 11% 증수 되었다. 양돈분뇨 발효액비 150% 시용구는 100% 시용구 대비 10% 감수하였다. 양돈분뇨 발효액비 180% 시용구는 등숙률과 천립중이 낮아져 19% 감수되었다. 2. 양돈분뇨 발효액비 100% 시용구의 단백질 함량은 7.9%로서 가장 낮았다. 그러나 양돈분뇨 발효액비 150%, 180% 시용구에서는 단백질 함량이 각각 9.0, 13.3%로 높아졌다. 돈분뇨 발효액비 180% 시용구는 완전미 비율이 42%로 매우 낮았다. 양돈분뇨 발효액비 적량시용은 벼 수량 증수와 쌀 품질 향상이 가능하나 벼 추천질소시비량 120% 이상 시용시 과번무로 등숙률과 천립중이 낮아졌으므로 양돈분뇨 발효액비 시용시 적량시용이 매우 중요한 것으로 결론 내려진다. 3. 액비 시용수준이 높을수록 토양의 치환성 K 함량이 높아졌다. 양돈분뇨 발효액비 100% 시용구의 치한성 K함량이 $0.66\;cmol+kg^{-1}$이었으나 180% 시용구에서는 $0.89\;cmol+kg^{-1}$으로 높아졌다. 양돈분뇨 발효액비 시용에 따른 논토양의 중금속 함량은 높아지지 않았다. 시험 후 토양의 구리, 아연함량은 토양환경보전법 토양오염 기준치 이하이었다.

Comparison of OECD Nitrogen Balances of Korea and Japan

  • The nitrogen (N) balance in Korea during 1985-1997 was calculated according to the surface balance method of the PARCOM guidelines and compared with Japanese N balance. The some differences were founded in the coefficients used on calculating N balance in two nations. Of the important parameters, which can make a big difference in balance, N input by organic fertilizers was not included in Korea different with Japanese, due to absence of reliable statistics and then made lower the input. Nitrogen destruction rate from livestock manure was adjusted differently with 15% in Korea but 28% in Japan. There was some difference in the conversion factors of livestock number into manure N quantity in two nations, but the gap was ignoble scale except beef cattle. Our manure N production rate of beef cattle might be evaluated to be so lower than Japanese. Biological N fixation by pulses was very higher in Korea than in Japan but scarcely affect the increase of total N input, due to small cultivation area. In contrast, N fixation rate by free-living organisms in Korean and Japanese wet paddies showed the big difference with 7.6 and $37.0kg\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$, respectively, and therefore $29.4kg\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$ of nitrogen was estimated to be more inputted in Japan. Although there are many points to be more specified and improved, still, Korean N balance was very high with $250-257kg\;ha^{-1}$ in the mid of 1990s, which was the second highest level in OECD countries and furthermore increased continuously during the investigation. In contrast in Japan, which has similar fanning system with Korea, N balance was lower with $130-158kg\;ha^{-1}$ and has decreased continuously since 1993. This high N balance was mainly due to a high usage of chemical fertilizers in our intensive fanning system and the fast increment of livestock feeding. Therefore, the more active action to decrease chemical fertilizer utilization and reduce livestock feeding density is required in the government and farmer sides.

무창 비육돈사에서 습식공기정화기의 여름철 공기정화효율 분석 (An Air Cleaning Efficiencies of Wet Air Cleaner in the Windowless Swine Fattening Stall in Summer)

  • The climate of stall significantly influences on animal production ability. High concentration of ammonia gas, $CO_2$ and lots of dust are found in modern densely raising stall system, as results, they provide a negative influence on animal and farmer health, and production ability. Therefore, it is necessary to keep clean the inside air of stall to increase the productivity. An air cleaner of wet type, consisting of a fan, a motor, rotating discs, a dust collector, a water bowl, an ozone generator etc, has been developed to clean the stall air. The work principle is that the inside air is sucked through the fan, and the rotating discs make water into fineness spray and blow into the stall. The rest water flows down to the dust collector. In the present study, we measured the dust, ammonia gas, odor, temperature and humidity in a swine stall that were installed two wet air cleaners with 700 fattening swine with On-mode and Off-mode of wet air cleaners. The dust measure was divided into 3 categories, TSP, $PM_{10}$, and $PM_{2.5}$. In summer, the TSP in on-mode were maximum $0.259mg/m^3$ and minimum $0.128mg/m^3$, and the average was $0.195mg/m^3$. These are comparable to the data from Off-mode stall that maximum $0.308mg/m^3$, minimum $0.139mg/m^3$, and average $0.277mg/m^3$. However, $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ showed any significant differences between the tests. The concentrations of ammonia gas in Off-mode stall were maximum 13.8 ppm and minimum 5.9 ppm, and the average was 8.47 ppm. However in On-mode stall the ammonia gas concentrations were maximum 10.5 ppm and minimum 5.5 ppm, and the average was 7.63 ppm. The concentration of ammonia gas in On-mode was 10% in average lower than off-mode stall. Odor was measured by olfactometer. In the Off-mode stall, the odor unit were maximum 420 $Ou/m^3$ and minimum $300\;OU/m^3$, and the average was $367\;OU/m^3$, but in the On-mode stall the odor unit were maximum $330\;OU/m^3$ and minimum $210\;OU/m^3$, and the average was $253\;OU/m^3$. Odor removal efficiency was about 31% in On-mode stall.

한우송아지의 경매가격에 대한 요인별 기여도 분석 (Contribution Rate Analysis for Factors in Auction Price on Hanwoo Calves)

  • 본 연구에는 경남의 혈통등록우 경매시장 A, B 지역에서 2014년도부터 2015년도에 경매된 한우송아지 중에서 경매가격이 있는 19,592두의 경매가격자료를 이용하였고 경매가격에 미치는 환경요인 및 요인별 기여도를 추정하였다. 연구의 결과를 살펴보면 송아지경매가격에 대한 모든 효과에서 고도의 유의적인 차이(p<0.01)를 나타내었고, 준부분 상관제곱(semi-partial correlation)값을 이용한 요인별 기여도 분석에서 회귀식의 수정모형 적합도(Adj R-Square)가 0.701로 나타났으며, 성, 경매체중, 출품개월령, 경매년도, 경매계절 및 경매지역의 준부분상관값은 각각 0.11563, 0.20013, 0.02823, 0.10727, 0.00330 및 0.02963으로 나타났다. 요인별 기여도에서 송아지 체중의 기여도가 가장 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 성, 경매년도, 경매지역 및 출품개월령 순으로 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 송아지 생산농가에서 경매가격을 잘 받기 위해서는 송아지의 발육정도를 측정할 수 있는 체중의 개량 및 적절한 사양 관리가 매우 중요할 것으로 사료된다. 또한 향후에는 개량방향과 맞는 우수한 유전자의 생산 및 확보가 농가 경쟁력 및 소득증대에 이바지할 것으로 사료된다. 송아지경매가격 및 요인별 기여도에 대한 연구는 아직 많이 부족한 상황으로 더 많은 연구가 이루어져야 할 것으로 사료된다.

하수처리수를 관개한 후 벼재배 시험구에 대한 미생물 위해성 평가 (Microbial Risk Assessment in Treated Wastewater Irrigation on Paddy Rice Plot)

  • 하수처리수는 이용할 수 있는 소중한 수자원이지만, 적절한 정책과 안전하고 효율적인 관리 없이는 이용할 수 없다. 본 연구에서는 국제적인 농업적 재이용수 수질기준을 고찰하고 하수처리수를 논에 관개한 후 E. coli의 농도를 모니터링 하였으며, Beta-Poisson 모형을 이용하여 두개의 시나리오를 바탕으로 미생물 위해성 평가를 실시하였다. 본 연구의 모니터링 결과 biofilter 유출수를 추가 처리 없이 관개한 처리구에서 높은 E. coli농도를 나타내었으며, 처리구와 모니터링 시기별로 큰 차이를 보였는데 이는 관개나 기타 영농작업시 저질이 교란되어 수체의 농도에 반영되고 처리구별 논의 생태 차이가 영향을 미친 것으로 판단된다. 하수처리수를 관개할 경우 Beta-poisson 모형을 이용하여 직접 영농활동에 참여하는 농부와 주변의 아이들에 미치는 위해성에 대해 평가하였다. 미생물 위해성 평가 결과 관개 직후보다 관개 후 24시간이 경과되면 위해도 값이 감소하는 것으로 나타났으며, 관개 후 1 ${\sim}$ 2일이 경과한 후에 작업에 임하는 것이 미생물 위험이 적은 것으로 나타났다. 2003년과 2004년 모두 관개 초기인 5월말과 6월초에 높은 위해도 값을 나타내었다. 본 연구에서 실시한 위해성 평가는 논에 관한 역학자료가 충분하지 않았으며,E. coli를 음용수로 섭취할 경우 발생할 수 있는 질병에 대한 평가 모형을 이용하였기 때문에 하수처리수의 논 관개시 위험을 평가하는데 한계를 갖고 있다. 하지만, 하수처리수를 관개용수로 사용할 경우 병원성 세균에 의한 감염의 개연성을 보여주었으며 하수처리수를 재이용하고자 할 때 추가적인 처리 등의 적절한 관리가 필요함을 시사한다.

라이시미터를 이용한 시설하우스 내에 살포한 농약의 휘산 양상 (Volatilization of Sprayed Pesticides in Greenhouse using a Lysimeter)

  • 본 연구는 시설하우스에 살포된 농약의 공기 중 시간에 따른 분포 양상을 파악하여 농작업자의 안전성을 확보하기 위한 기초자료로 제공하기위해 수행하였다. 농작물에 많이 사용하는 물리화학적 성질이 다른 농약 10가지 성분을 선정하였으며 라이시미터 밭토양에 살포 후 공기 중으로 휘산된 양상을 720시간 동안 조사하였다. PUF 흡착제와 low volume air sampler를 이용하여 공기 중 농약을 포집한 후 LC-MS/MS를 이용하여 공기 중의 농약을 분석하였다. 720시간 동안 대부분의 농약이 24-48시간 사이에 최대 잔류를 보였다. 증기압이 1 mPa 이상의 농약은 살포 후 120-192시간까지도 공기 중 높은 농도가 지속되는 양상을 보인 반면 증기압이 1 mPa 이하인 경우에는 살포 후 첫 포집 시에 가장 높은 농도를 보이고 그 후로 계속해서 낮아지는 농도를 보였다. 공기 중의 최대 농도는 ethoprophos, diazinon, pendimethalin, chlorpyrifos, alachlor, metolachlor, carbaryl, napropamide, tebuconazole, imidacloprid 순으로 증기압의 높낮음 순서와 거의 일치하여 증기압과 휘산량의 상관관계가 높음을 알 수 있었다.

농촌여성(農村女性)의 건강실태(健康實態)에 관한 연구(硏究) (The Health Status of Rural Farming Women)

  • 1. Background Women's health and their involvement in health care are essential to health for everyone. If they are ignorant, malnourished or over-worked, the health &-their families as well as their own health will suffer. Women's health depends on broad considerations beyond medicine. Among other things, it depends upon their work in farming. their subordination to their families, their accepted roles, and poor hygiene with poorly equipped housing and environmental sanitation. 2. Objectives and Contents a. The health status of rural women : physical and mental complaints, experience of pesticides intoxication, Farmer's syndrome, experiences of reproductive health problems. b. participation in and attitudes towards housework and farming c. accessibility of medical care d. status of maternal health : fertility, family planning practice. induced abortion, and maternal care 3. Research method A nationwide field survey, based on stratified random sampling, was conducted during July, 1986. Revised Cornell Medical index(68 out of 195 items). Kawagai's Farmers Syndrome Scale, and self-developed structured questionnaires were used to rural farming wives(n=2.028). aged between 26-55. 4. Characteristics of the respondents mean age : 40.2 marital status : 90.8% married mean no. of household : 4.9 average years of education : 4.7 yrs. average income of household : \235,000 average years of residence in rural area : 36.4 yrs average Working hours(household and farming) : 11 hrs. 23 min 5. Health Status of rural women a. The average number of physical and mental symptoms were 12.4, 4.7, and the rate of complaints were 22.1%, 38.8% each. revealing complaints of mental symptomes higher than physical ones. b. 65.4% of rural women complained of more than 4 symptoms out of 9, indicating farmer's syndrome. 11.9 % experienced pesticide overdue syndrome c. 57.6% of respondents experienced women-specific health problems. d. Age and education of respondents were the variables which affect on the level of their health 6. Utilization of medical services a. The number of symptoms and complaints of respondents were dependent on the distance to where the health-care service is given b. Drug store was the most commonly utilized due to low price and the distance to reach. while nurse practitioners were well utilized when there were nurse practitioner's office in their villages. c. Rural women were internalized their subordination to husbands and children, revealing they are positive(93%) in health-care demand for-them but negative(30%) for themselves d. 33.0% of respondents were habitual drug users, 4.5% were smokers and 32.3% were alcohol drinkers. and 86.3% experienced induced-abortion. But most of them(77.6%) knew that those had negative effects on health. 7. Maternal Health Care a. Practice rate of contraception was 48.1% : female users were 90.9% in permanent and 89.6% in temporary contraception b. Induced abortions were taken mostly at hospital(86.3%), while health centers(4.7%), midwiferies(4.3%). and others(4.5%) including drug stores were listed a few. The repeated numbers of induced abortion seemed affected on the increasing numbers of symptoms and complaints. c. The first pre-natal check-up during first trimester was 41.8%, safe delivery rate was 15.6%, post-natal check-up during two months after delivery. Rural women had no enough rest after delivery revealing average days of rest from home work and farming 8.3 and 17.2. d. 86.6% practised breast feeding, showing younger and more educated mothers depending on artificial milk 8. Recommendations a. To lessen the multiple role over burden housing and sanitary conditions should be improved, and are needed farming machiner es for women and training on the use of them b. Health education should begin at primary school including health behavior and living environment. c. Women should be encouraged to become policy-makers as well as administrators in the field of women specific health affairs. d. Women's health indicators should be developed and women's health surveillance system too.
