Wave Reflection and Transmission from Buoyant Flap Typed Storm Surge Barriers - Hydraulic Experiments (부유 플랩형 고조방파제의 파랑 반사 및 전달 - 수리실험)

  • To evaluate wave reflection and transmission from buoyant flap-typed storm surge barriers, hydraulic experiments were performed by using regular and irregular wave conditions. Buoyant flap-typed storm surge barriers consist of buoyant main body connected with foundation structure in the seabed by hinge. The characteristics of wave reflection, transmission and dynamic response of the structure were investigated for 36 regular and 4 irregular wave conditions. It was also evaluated the usage of plain plate attached on the buoyant main body as one of alternatives to control wave reflection and transmission. From the hydraulic experiments, it was found that the case of plain plate attached on the offshore side is very effective to improve the wave transmission as well as reflection. But, the effect of the case on the harbor side might be negligible.

Psychological, Social, and Environmental Factors Associated With Utilization of Senior Centers Among Older Adults in Korea

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study was to examine the relationships among the psychological, social, and environmental factors influencing the utilization of senior centers among older adults in Korea. Methods: A questionnaire survey was administered to two types of older adults who lived in Seoul, Korea: 262 older adults who used senior centers (3 places) and 156 older adults who did not use senior centers. Results: Our results showed clearly that the utilization of the senior centers in Korea is affected by higher self-efficacy (odds ratio [OR], 6.08; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.31 to 12.32), higher perceived benefits (OR, 1.71; 95% CI, 1.16 to 4.36), lower perceived barriers (OR, 6.43; 95% CI, 3.07 to 11.45), higher family support (OR, 4.21; 95% CI, 2.02 to 8.77), and higher support from friends (OR, 4.08; 95% CI, 2.38 to 7.81). The results also showed that participants whose total travel time was 15 to 29 minutes (OR, 2.84; 95% CI, 1.21 to 3.64) or less than 14 minutes (OR, 4.68; 95% CI, 3.41 to 8.41) were more likely to use a senior center than those who had to travel more than 30 minutes. Conclusions: This study showed that the utilization of senior centers in Korea is affected by psychological, social, and environmental factors, specifically by self-efficacy, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, social support, convenience of transportation, and total travel time to the senior centers. The effects of longer-term utilization of the senior centers by non-users on health-related outcomes in a large population warrant attention.

A Study on the Removal of Heavy Metals from Groundwater Using Permeable Reactive Barriers Based on Nano FeS (나노 FeS를 이용한 투과성반응벽체의 중금속 오염 지하수 처리에 관한 연구)

  • The acid mine drainage (AMD) and landfill leachates released into the subsurface environment can result in serious environmental problems like soil and groundwater contamination. The AMD and the leachates of landfill were known to contain many heavy metals. In this study, the author assessed the reactivity and ability of the FeS coated-ALC for the removal of contaminants (As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn, Al) in AMD and leachates in landfill. The synthetic nano-FeS and Autoclaved Lightweight Concrete (ALC) were used as reactive materials in the permeable reactive barriers(PRBs). The result of batch test indicated that synthetic nano-FeS can remove 99% of heavy metals for the 1hr of reaction time except for As and Ni(about 90%). However, the 80% of As and Ni was removed in column 1(FeS coated-ALC). The column 2(Ore FeS) removed more than 99% of heavy metals. The pH of the column 1 was increased from 3.51 to 6.39~6.50, and the pH with column 2 was increased from 3.51 to 9.20. As the result of this study, the author can surmise that the synthetic nano-FeS coated ALC will use as a very good reactive material of the PRBs to treat the contaminated groundwater with AMD and leachate of landfill.

Exploration of Barriers to Breast-Self Examination among Urban Women in Shah Alam, Malaysia: A Cross Sectional Study

  • Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Malaysia. Barriers for practicing breast self examination (BSE) await exploration. Objective: To assess the practice of BSE and its correlated factors and particularly barriers amongst urban women in Malaysia. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 222 Malaysian women using a self-administered questionnaire. Results: The mean (SD) age was 28.5 (${\pm}9.2$) years, 59.0% were university graduates. Of the total, 81.1% were aware of breast cancer and 55% practiced BSE. Amongst 45% of respondents who did not practice BSE, 79.8% did not know how to do it, 60.6% feared being diagnosed with breast cancer, 59.6% were worried about detecting breast cancer, 22% reported that they should not touch their bodies, 44% and 28% reported BSE is embarrassing or unpleasant, 29% time consuming, 22% thought they would never have breast cancer or it is ineffective and finally 20% perceived BSE as unimportant. Logistic regression modeling showed that respondents aged ${\geq}45$ years, being Malay, married and having a high education level were more likely to practice BSE (p<0.05). Conclusion: In this study sample, a significant proportion of respondents was aware of breast cancer but did not practice BSE. Knowledge, psychological, cultural, perception and environmental factors were identified as barriers. BSE practice was associated significantly with socio-demographic factors and socioeconomic status.

Effect of Double Noise-Barrier on Air Pollution Dispersion around Road, Using CFD

  • Noise-barriers on both sides of the roadway (hereafter referred to as double noise-barriers), are a common feature along roads in Korea, and these are expected to have important effects on the near-road air pollution dispersion of vehicle emissions. This study evaluated the double noise-barrier impact on near-road air pollution dispersion, using a FLUENT computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. The realizable k-${\varepsilon}$ model in FLUENT CFD code was used to simulate vehicle air pollutant dispersion, in around 11 cases of double noise-barriers. The simulated concentration profiles and surface concentrations under no barrier cases were compared with the experimental results. The results of the simulated flows show the following three regimes in this study: isolated roughness (H/W=0.05), wake interface (H/W=0.1), and skimming flow (H/W>0.15). The results also show that the normalized average concentrations at surface (z=1 m) between the barriers increase with increasing double noise-barrier height; however, normalized average concentrations at the top position between the barriers decrease with increasing barrier height. It was found that the double noise-barrier decreases normalized average concentrations of leeward positions, ranging from 0.8 (H/W=0.1, wake interface) to 0.1 (H/W=0.5, skimming flow) times lower than that of the no barrier case, at 10 x/h downwind position; and ranging from 1.0 (H/W=0.1) to 0.4 (H/W=0.5) times lower than that of the no barrier case, at 60 x/h downwind position.

Wave Responses of Buoyant Flap-typed Storm Surge Barriers - Numerical Simulation (부유 플랩형 고조방파제의 파랑응답 - 수치모의)

  • In this paper, wave responses of buoyant flap-typed storm surge barriers was studied numerically. Wave motions were modeled by using a linear potential wave theory, and behaviors of structures were represented as a Newton's 2nd law of motion. The near field region of the fluid was discretized as conventional quadratic iso-parametric elements, while the far field was modeled as infinite elements. Comparisons with the results from hydraulic model tests show that the present model gives good results. By using the model, the applicability of a buoyant flap-typed storm surge barrier in Masan bay was investigated considering field environmental conditions.

The Impact of Environmental TBTs on Exports of Korean Manufactures (환경 TBT가 국내 주요 제조업 수출에 미치는 영향)

  • The impact of each country's environmental protection and climate change policies on trade is increasing. The strengthening of trade barrier resulted in an increase of Technical Barriers to Trade(TBTs). This international trend carries important implications for Korean manufacturers, which is highly dependent on trade. Discussions on the trade effects of TBT are still ongoing. This study that quantitatively analyzed the effect of TBT on trade have employed a gravity model. As a result of the analysis using the basic model, it was found that the effect of environmental TBT notifications on trade is positive(+) overall. However, the electrical machinery and equipment·electronics industries are negatively affected by environmental TBT. There is a pressing need to preemptively identify the impact of environmental TBT in major countries on the exports of Korean manufacturing industries in order to strengthen the competitiveness of domestic industries and pursue countermeasures.

  • With the rapid industrial development, railways have become a main traffic means of transportation. However, rail traffic noise and vibration have become a major problem in urban areas which is a very serious issue for the living environment. Especially, railway noise induced by rail operations has influenced on the residents living near railway tracks. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the Raynoise modeling in railway applications. Generally, my acoustics have been used to investigate the effectiveness of noise barriers in railway applications and barriers are modeled using the commercial software Raynoise. A-weighted sound pressure level have been measured at six locations, 4m from the track and are compared with experimental values. Based on the analysis of the results, Comparison between numerical and experimental values are within 1dB (A). Also, when a train is m through the Raynoise modeling, the general influential sphere of railway noise can be determined. Therefore, this study will be using basic data in establishing effective railway noise prevention plans far the future. Also, we could know that is applicable of Raynoise modeling at railway noise.

A Study for Selecting Modular Construction Method - Focus on Benefits and Barriers of Modular Method - (플랜트 공사 모듈러 공법 적용 의사결정을 위한 연구 - 모듈러 공법의 장·단점 및 적용 장벽에 대한 고찰 -)

  • Recently, The importance of modular construction method has increased by market environmental change. However, it's application in the actual project is restricted due to the lack of understanding of modularization and the absence of utilization system. To overcome this problem, this study propose the decision-making model for selecting modular or conventional (stick-built) construction method at early stage. First the needs of modular method in plant project is derived and the benefits and barriers of modular construction are analyzed through literature review. Based on this analysis, 6 decision-making factors covered project and modular characteristics are derived and the decision-making model is developed. Finally, 12 actual overseas project cases is evaluated by this model for verifying its applicability. This proposed model can provide the guideline to select the construction method in early stage for successful execution of plant project.

A Study on the Characterization of Geotechnical Properties in Permeable Barriers Mixture of Bentonite, Loess, and Sand (벤토나이트·황토·모래를 혼합한 투수벽체의 지반공학적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the geotechnical applicability of permeable barriers that could filter the leachate from a landfill was evaluated. Specimens were cast from sand, loess and bentonite according to the specific weight ratios of them. A series of experiments are performed to determine the unconfined compressive strength and permeability of various mixing ratio of bentonite, loess, and sand. From the laboratory test, optimum mixing ratio that satisfied the regulations of unconfined compressive strength($5kgf/cm^2$) and coefficient of permeability ($10^{-3}{\sim}10^{-4}cm/sec$) in landfill was found when the weight ratio of sand and loess was 8:2 with 2% of bentonite. Using the laboratory test data and in situ test results, the applicability of the wall will be tested for various conditions.
