  • As the economy has grown and the main industry in Korea has been changed from secondary industry to tertiary industry, the importance of indoor environment has been a matter of common concern, in which one of the main concerns is to improve the indoor acoustic conditions. However, even though this is required more than before, there are no measures to protect the human being from the noise of electric home appliances. This is owing to the absence of the data about sound power level of electric home appliances. So, we investigate the sound power level of them and analyze the acoustical characteristics of each one. First, we tried to investigate the sound power measurement method of each electric home appliance. After it we test the sound power level of them. From the survey, we can know that the vacuum cleaner is the most noisy electric home appliance, and the refrigerator is the least noisy one. This results will help us predict the indoor noise level using the basic data of sound power level.

  • The noise reducing devices installed on the noise barrier have been developed in many shapes and ways to reduce noise around road traffic areas. In this study, test and estimation method for the noise reducing device witch installed on the top of a noise barrier was suggested. For this, the authors have considered sound power flow around the device and sound pressure levels for the far field area. To estimate the area effect behind the barrier, area average of noise pressure level difference divided by two area, upper and bellow the sight-line. Comparing the attenuation difference of these areas, the tendency of noise reduction effect was studied according to type of noise reducing devices. Compared with noise shielding efficiency of the devices that using equivalent height of a simple barrier calculated by the SoundPlan, the commercial environment noise simulation software.

  • Viscoelastic materials are widely used to solve the vibration and noise problems. To apply the well-known damping technologies successfully to the vibration and noise problems, the damping characteristics of the viscoelastic materials applied to the base structures must be thoroughly understood. The objectives of the present study are : 1) to establish the damping measurement technique via modal testing by which the damping characteristics of viscoelastic materials can be measured in the university laboratory environment, and 2) to develop a computer program to draw the reduced-frequency-nomogram by use of restricted number of experimental data, which can be used efficiently for the damping analysis and application.

  • The multiple regression analysis and path analysis in each dominant area of noise source are conducted to analyze the relationship between dependent variables like annoyance and independent ones such as noise and non-noise factors. The multiple regression analysis shows that impact of noise factors is the highest to annoyance in dominant areas of road traffic and railway noise. Meanwhile, impact of non-noise factors such as sensitivity and satisfaction of environment on annoyance is also high in these areas. The path analysis result for multivariate analysis between various independent and dependent variables is similar to that of the multiple regression analysis. However, noise factor is the greatest factor influent on annoyance in the dominant areas of the combined noise, and relationship between annoyance and sensitivity is the highest in combined area exposed to road traffic noise and railway noise.

  • The high-speed train enjoys widespread acceptance as environment-friendly means of medium- to long-distance transportation. The pursuit of higher speed and lighter weight in railroad vehicles has engendered higher noise level. In particular, the environmental noise places many restrictions in the operation of high-speed railroad vehicles. This research investigates the effect of installing a skirt onto a high-speed train bogie with the top speed of 400 km/hr and using High Speed EMU for the purpose of reducing the environmental noise. In order to analyze the effect of the interior noise and environmental noise due to installation of the skirt, sound level is calculated using the Ray method and Statical Energy Analysis method. The numerical calculation predicts a reduction of approximately 2 dB in the environmental noise level, but at the cost of increase of approximately 2.5 dB in the interior noise level of the vehicle.

  • Flexible stay cables on cable-stayed bridges are three-dimensional. They sag and flex in the complex wind environment, which is a different situation to ideal rigid cylinders in two-dimensional wind flow. Aerodynamic interference and the response characteristics of wake galloping of full-scale parallel cables are potentially different due to three-dimensional flows around cables. This study presents a comprehensive wind tunnel investigation of wake galloping of parallel stay cables using three-dimensional aeroelastic cable models. The wind tunnel study focuses on the large spacing instability range, addressing the effects of cable separation, wind yaw angle, and wind angle of attack on wake galloping response. To investigate the effectiveness of vibration suppression measures, wind tunnel studies on the transversely connected cable systems for two types of connections (flexibility and rigidity) at two positions (mid-span and quarter-span) were also conducted. This experimental study provides useful insights for better understanding the characteristics of wake galloping that will help in establishing a guideline for the wind-resistant design of the cable system on cable-stayed bridges.

  • The minimization method is widely used to predict the dynamic characteristics of a system. Generally, data recorded by experiment (for example displacement) tends to contain noise, and the error in the properties of the system is proportional to the noise level (NL). In addition, the accuracy of the results depends on various factors such as the signal character, filtering method or cut off frequency. In particular, coupled terms in multimode systems show larger differences compared to the true value when measured in an environment with a high NL. The iterative least square (ILS) method was proposed to reduce these errors that occur under a high NL, and has been verified in previous research. However, the ILS method might be sensitive to the signal processing, including the determination of cutoff frequency. This paper focused on improving the accuracy of the ILS method, and proposed the modified ILS (MILS) method, which differs from the ILS method by the addition of a new calculation process based on correlation coefficients for each degree of freedom. Comparing the results of these systems with those of a numerical simulation revealed that both ILS and the proposed MILS method provided good prediction of the dynamic properties of the system under investigation (in this case, the damping ratio and damped frequency). Moreover, the proposed MILS method provided even better prediction results for the coupling terms of stiffness and damping coefficient matrix.

  • It is very important to detect the bearing defects in rotating machinery since the critical failure of bearing cause a machinery shutdown. However it is difficult to detect the vibration signal resulting from the initial defects of bearing because of the high level of broadband noise. A signal processing technique, called the adaptive line enhancer(ALE) as one of adaptive filter, is studied in this work. This technique is to eliminate broadband noise without a prior knowledge of the noise and signal characteristics. Also we propose the optimal methods for selecting the three main ALE parameters such as correlation length, filter order and adaptation constant used in the adaptative process. Vibration signals for three abnormal bearings, including inner and outer raceways and ball defects, were acquired from Anderon(angular derivative of radius on)meter. The experimental results showed that the proposed technique can reliably detect the bearing defective signals masked by broadband noise.

  • The automotive environment is particularly demanding on connector performance, and is characterized by large temperature changes, high humidity and corrosive atmospheres. Fretting is a contact damage process that occurs between two contact surfaces. Fretting corrosion refers to corrosion damage at the asperities of contact surfaces. This damage is induced under load and in the presence of repeated relative surface motion, as induced for example by vibration. This paper critically reviews the works published previously on fretting corrosion of electrical connectors. Various experimental approaches such as testing machines, material selection, testing environments, acceleration testing techniques and preventing methods are addressed. Future research prospects arc suggested.
