A Study on the Full-scale Soil Washing Process Improved by Multi-stage Continuous Desorption and Agitational Desorption Techniques to Remediate Petroleum-contaminated Soils (현장규모의 유류오염토양 세척공법에 다단연속탈착 및 교반탈착기법을 이용한 세척공정 성능향상에 관한 연구)

  • In accompany with the transfer of US army bases, recent surveys reported serious contamination of soils by the release of petroleum from storage facilities and heavy metals accumulated in rifle-ranges. These problems have made an increased concerns of cleanup technology for contaminated soils. In this study, a full-scale soil washing process improved by multistage continuous desorption and agitational desorption techniques was examined for petroleum-contaminated soils obtained from three different remedial sites that contained 29.3, 16.6, and 7.8% of silt and clay, respectively. The initial concentrations of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) were 5,183, 2,560, and 4,860 mg/kg for each soil. Pure water was applied to operate washing process, in which water used for washing process was recycled 100% for over 6 months. The results of full-scale washing tests showed that the TPH concentrations for soils (> 3.0 mm) were 50${\sim}$356 mg/kg (85.2${\sim}$98.2% removal rates), regardless of the contents of silt and clay from in A, B and C soil, when the soils were washed at 3.0 kg/$cm^2$ of injection pressure with the method of wet particle separation. Based on the initial TPH concentration, the TPH removal rates for each site were 85.2, 98.2 and 89.9%. For soils in the range of 3.0${\sim}$0.075 mm, the application of first-stage desorption technique as a physical method resulted 834, 1,110, and 1,460 mg/kg of TPH concentrations for each soil, also additional multi-stage continuous desorption reduced the TPH concentration to 330, 385, and 245 mg/kg that were equivalent to 92.4, 90.6, and 90.1% removal rates, respectively. The result of multi-stage continuous desorption for fine soil (0.075${\sim}$0.053 mm) were 791, 885, and 1,560 mg/kg, and additional agitation desorption showed 428, 440, and, 358 mg/kg of TPH concentrations. Compared with initial concentration, the removal rates were 92.0, 93.9 and 92.9%, respectively. These results implied we could apply strategic process of soil washing for varies types of contaminated soils to meet the regulatory limit of TPH.

  • Current feeder system (CFS) for Korea superconducting tokamak advanced research(KSTAR) project plays a role to interconnect magnet power supply (MPS) and superconducting (SC) magnets through the normal bus-bar at the room temperature(300 K) environment and the SC bus-line at the low temperature (4.5 K) environment. It is divided by two systems, i.e., toroidal field system which operates at 35 kA DC currents and poloidal field system wherein 20$\sim$26 kA pulsed currents are applied during 350 s transient time. Aside from the vacuum system of main cryostat, an independent vacuum system was constructed for the CFS in which a roughing system is consisted by a rotary and a mechanical booster pump and a high vacuum system is developed by four cryo-pumps with one dry pump as a backing pump. A self interlock and its control system, and a supervisory interlock and its control system are also established for the operational reliability as well. The entire CFS was completely tested including the reliability of local/supervisory control/interlock, helium gas leakage, vacuum pressure, and so on.

Catalytic Wet Air Oxidation by TiO2 Supported Mn-Ce Based Catalysts (Mn-Ce계/TiO2 촉매에 의한 아세트산의 습식산화 반응특성)

  • Catalytic wet air oxidation of acetic acid over Mn-Ce based catalysts deposited on various supports ($SiO_2$, $TiO_2$, $ZrO_2$), $ZrSiO_4$, $ZrO_2(10wt%)/TiO_2$) have been carried out in high pressure microreactors. Also, promotional effects by small addition(O.5~1.0 wt%) of p-type semiconductors (CoO, $Ag_2O$, SnO) have been investigated. From the screening tests for initial activity ranking, both Mn(2.8)-Ce(7.2 wt%) and Ru(O.4)Mn(2.7)-Ce(6.9 wt%) supported on $TiO_2$ were selected as the promising reference candidates. In $Mn-Ce/TiO_2$ reference catalyst, addition of small amount of each p-type semiconductor (Co, Sn and Ag) resulted in activity promotional effect and the degree of the increase was in the following order: Co> Ag > Sn. Especially, $Mn-Ce/TiO_2$ promoted with 0.5 wt% Co gave the 2.6 folds activity increase compared to the reference case attributing to the surface area increase as well as synergy effect. In $Ru-Mn-Ce/TiO_2$ reference catalyst, only Co(1.0 wt%) promoted case showed a little reaction rate increase.

The Synthetic Study of Environmental Contamination at the Seokdae Municipal Waste Landfill in Pusan (부산 석대 생활폐기물 매립장의 환경오염에 대한 종합적 연구)

  • In order to understand the characteristics of leachate at the Seokdae municipal waste landfill in the Pusan city, the correlation between leachate pollution loading and volume of gas production. concentration of gas and subsidence of ground, the characteristical methos, geochemical analyses and laboratory column tests using samples of gases, leachate and surface soil of Seokdae waste landfill area. Through the analysis of water balance, leachate flow rate and pollution loading were estimated. Geistatistical analysis of four gas components ( $O_2$, C $H_4$, $H_2$S and CO) shows the possibility of ground subsidence around the group of a site with high concentration of gas. From geochemical analyses of leachate, EC and Total-Alkalinity of ground subsidence around the group of a site with high concentration of gas. From geochemical analysis of leachate, Ec and Total-Alkalinity were increased, and Cl, Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb were decreassed comparing to the part, and the type of water quality was Na-HC $O_3$ in trilinear diagram. It shows that biodecomposition of municipal wastes continues actively. From the analysis of water balance, the total leachate flow rate is about 465.11㎥/day and pure pollution loading of Cl, Mn and Fe are estimated to 223.8kg/day, 0.2kg/day, 0.3kg/day, respectively. The laboratory column test of residual soil and landfill soil shows 0.206cm and 0.019cm for linear velocity(equation omitted), 0.234 $\textrm{cm}^2$/min and 0.018$\textrm{cm}^2$/min for diffusion coefficient ( $D_{ι}$), and 1.136cm and 0.095cm longitudinal dispersion index ($\alpha$$_{ι}$), respective]y. It demonstrates that the delay time of contamination for residual soil is shorter than that of landfill soil.

Studies on Chemical Resistance of Mites. II. Orchard Mite Control and their Resistance to Metasystox, Folidol and C-8514 in Korea (응애류의 약제 저항성에 관한 연구 II . Metasystox, Folidol 및 C-8514에 대한 과수응애류의 저항성과 방제시험)

  • The study involved determination of resistance levels of spider mites to Metasystox, Folidol and C-8514 using slide dip technique: a feid trial of alternative acaricides using an O/P resistant strain. 1. Resistant strains of two-spotted spider mite( Tetranychus urticae Koch) were collected from Taegu, Kyungsan, Chunchun, Yesan, Suwon, Osan and Chungju, and kept in the glasshouse through the experiments. Resistant strains of European red mite (Panonychus ulmi Koch) were collected from Chungju, Taegu, Yesan, Chunchun, Suwon and Whasung, and Wonju susceptible was collected. Immediately after collection, tests were applied. All strains except susceptible populations had regularly been sprayed with Organo-phosphates including Parathion (or Folidol), Metasystox, Phenkapton and Trithion for more than the ten Bast years; and Organo-chlorines such as Kelthane and C-8514 more than five years. Comparisons of the resistant strains and susceptible strains at the $LC_50$ values are as follows: a. With Metasystox, resistance levels of the Chungju, Taegu, Yesan, Chunchun and Suwon resistant strains of P. ulmi were respectively, 96,52,4,3 and 2, times as resistant as the Wonju susceptible strain. b. With Folidol, resistance levels of the Chungju, Chunchun, Yesan, Whasung and Suwon strains of P. ulmi showed respectively, 126, 48, 33, 30 and 6-fold resistance levels over the susceptible strain. c. With C-8514, resistance levels of the Taegu, Suwon, Whasung and Chungju strains of P. ulmi were 42, 31, 30 and 20 times greater than the susceptible strain, respectively. d. With Metasystox, resistance levels of the Taegu, Chunchun, Yesan and Suwon, strains of T urticae were respectively, 32,29,25 and 17 times as resistant as the susceptible strain. e. With C-8514, resistance levels of the Taegu, Chungju and Kyungsan strains of T. urticae showed respectively, 59, 29 and 19-fold resistance levels over the Osan strain. 2. Field trials were carried out to assess the toxicities of eleven alternative materials which would be used for control of O/P resistant strain of Panonychus ulmi. The acaricide groups represented were 2 Organo-chlorines (Kelthane MF and Prethylen), 1 carbamate (Furadan), 1 nitrophenyl (Morocide), 1 carbonate (Morestan), 1 tin(Plictran), 1 fluorine (Nissol), 2 mixtures (Fundal and Banmite) and Organo-phosphate (Phenkapton). Of all acaricides tested Kelthane, Plictran, Fundal and Morestan were the most effective; fol]owed by Banmite, Furadan, Prethylen and Nissol. Sumite and Morocide were intermediate, but Phenkapton(Organo-phosphate) was very poor. In other words, a first application of the above outstanding materials gave very high degrees of control of O/P resistant population of European red mite for about 7 to 12 days. However, the results indicate that secondary application would sometimes be necessary. There was no foliage damage to apple trees by any of the acaricides tested of the concentrations used.

Effects of Apex Removal on the Growth and Yield of Artichoke by Planting Times (정식시기별 생장점 제거가 아티초크(Cynara scolymus L.)의 생육 및 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • Apex removal is a common practice in artichoke cultivation to harvest heads of lateral shoots. This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of apex removal by different planting times on the growth and yield of Artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) in open field. Two treatments (apex removal and no apex removal) at three different planting times ($1^{st}$: Sep. 27, 2011, $2^{nd}$: March 29, 2012, and $3^{rd}$: Sep. 21, 2012) were tested using 'Green Globe' variety. There was no difference in the head characteristics and the number of harvested head between the treatments. The head weight was heavier in no apex removal of 242.7 g than the apex removal of 170.8 g. The yield also increased in no apex removal by 25% (1,249 kg/10a) compared to the apex removal of 997 kg/10a at the first planting time. At the second planting time, there was no difference in the head weights between the treatments. But the number of the harvested head was higher in no apex removal with 10.8 than 8.2 of the apex removal. The yield of no apex removal was 2,660 kg/10a, which was higher than 1,848 kg/10a of apex removal. At the third planting time, the head weight increased in no apex removal with 253.5 g compared to the apex removal with 218.7 g. The yield of no apex removal was 1,405 kg/10a, which was higher than 1,148 kg/10a of the apex removal. All the tests at 3 different planting times showed that the artichoke yields were higher in no apex removal than in apex removal. Therefore, it is desirable to cultivate artichoke without removing the apex for the higher yield and labor saving in open-field cultivation in Jeju island.

Mechanisms of Immobilization and Leaching Characteristics of Arsenic in the Waste Rocks and Tailings of the Abandoned Mine Areas (폐광산 지역 폐광석 및 광미에서 비소의 고정 메커니즘과 용출특성)

  • EPMA determined that Fe(Mn)-(oxy)hydroxides and well-crystallized Fe-(oxy)hydroxides and could contain a small amount of As $(0.3-11.0\;wt.\%\;and\;2.1-7.4\;wt.\%\;respectively)$. Amorphous crystalline Fe-(oxy) hydroxide assemblages were identified as the richest in As with $28-36\;wt.\%$. On the ternary $As_2O_5-SO_3-Fe_2O_3$ diagram, these materials were interpreted here as 'scorodite-like'. Dissolved As was attenuated by the adsorption on Fe-(oxy) hydroxides and Fe(Mn)-(oxy) hydroxides and/or the formation of an amorphous Fe-As phase (maybe scorodite: $FeAsO_4\cdot2H_2O$). Leaching tests were performed in order to find out leaching characteristics of As and Fe under acidic conditions. At the initial pHs 3 and 5, As contents dissolved from tailings of the cheongyang mine significantly increased after 7 days due to the oxidation of As-bearing secondary minerals (up to ca. $2.4\%$ of total), while As of Seobo mine-tailing samples was rarely released (ca. $0.0-0.1\%$ of total). Dissolution experiments at an initial pH 1 liberated a higher amount of As (ca. $1.1-4.2\%$ of total for Seobo tailings, $1.5-14.4\%$ of total for Cheongyang tailings). In addition, good correlation between As and Fe in leached solutions with tailings was observed. The kinetic problems could be the important factor which leads to increasing concentrations of As in the runoff water. Release of As from Cheongyang tailings can potentially pose adverse impact to surface and groundwater qualities in the surrounding environment, while precipitation of secondary minerals and the adsorption of As are efficient mechanisms for decreasing the mobilities of As in the surface environment of Seobo mine area.

Analysis of Slope Stability Considering the Saturation Depth Ratio by Rainfall Infiltration in Unsaturated Soil (불포화토 내 강우침투에 따른 포화깊이비를 고려한 사면안정해석)

  • This study proposes a modified equation to calculate the factor of safety for an infinite slope considering the saturation depth ratio as a new variable calculated from rainfall infiltration into unsaturated soil. For the proposed equation, this study introduces the concepts of the saturation depth ratio and subsurface flow depth. Analysis of the factor of safety for an infinite slope is conducted by the sequential calculation of the effective upslope contributing area, subsurface flow depth, and the saturation depth ratio based on quasi-dynamic wetness index theory. The calculation process makes it possible to understand changes in the factor of safety and the infiltration behavior of individual rainfall events. This study analyzes stability changes in an infinite slope, considering the saturation depth ratio of soil, based on the proposed equation and the results of soil column tests performed by Park et al. (2011 a). The analysis results show that changes in the factor of safety are dependent on the saturation depth ratio, which reflects the rainfall infiltration into unsaturated weathered gneiss soil. Under continuous rainfall with intensities of 20 and 50 mm/h, the time taken for the factor of safety to decrease to less than 1.3 was 2.86-5.38 hours and 1.34-2.92 hours, respectively; in the case of repeated rainfall events, the time taken was between 3.27 and 5.61 hours. The results demonstrate that it is possible to understand changes in the factor of safety for an infinite slope dependent on the saturation depth ratio.

Engineering Characteristics of Wet-mixing Solidified Soil in Pavement Surfacing (습식 경화교반토 포장의 공학적 특성)

  • Roads, like bikeways, parkways and walks, are to be just capable of supporting light traffic and traveling public, but they are required to be human friendly and environmental-oriented. Lately soil-solidifier mixture, a kind of soil-cement, has developed and has been applied to the recycling and environment-oriented pavement as the surfacing material. Soil-solidifier pavement structure has been designed by only experience. To design this pavement mechanically, it is necessary to find out basic engineering properties of soil-solidifier mixture. This study focuses on finding out mechanical characteristics of the mixture according to mixture proportions and aging. Test molds with various mixture proportions are made, and then unconfined strength tests are performed for test molds with aging of the mixture. As the result of this study, it is found that the strength of the mixture increases with amount of cement and that maximum strength is achieved at 6%$\sim$8% of the ratio of solidifier and water. The strength increase rapidly until 14 days, after then slowly. After 28 days the strength of the mixture approaches to the constant value. The heat of hydration during curing of the mixture is measured no significantly. It also shows that temperature characteristics of the mixture is similar to that of soil. Since this mixture is mixed with soil and is able to improve engineering problems in pavement due to temperature, this mixture is expected to use effectively in the environment-oriented pavement for light traffic.

The Phenomenological Comparison between Results from Single-hole and Cross-hole Hydraulic Test (균열암반 매질 내 단공 및 공간 간섭 시험에 대한 현상적 비교)

  • Generally, fractured medium can be described with some key parameters, such as hydraulic conductivities or random field of hydraulic conductivities (continuum model), spatial and statistical distribution of permeable fractures (discrete fracture network model). Investigating the practical applicability of the well-known conceptual models for the description of groundwater flow in fractured media, various types of hydraulic tests were applied to studies on the highly fractured media in Geumsan, Korea. Results from single-hole packer test show that the horizontal hydraulic conductivities in the permeable media are between $7.67{\times}10^{-10}{\sim}3.16{\times}10^{-6}$ m/sec, with $7.70{\times}10^{-7}$ m/sec arithmetic mean and $2.16{\times}10^{-7}$ m/sec geometric mean. Total number of test interval is 110 at 8 holes. The number of completely impermeable interval is 9, and the low permeable interval - below $1.0{\times}10^{-8}$ m/sec is 14. In other words, most of test intervals are permeable. The vertical distribution of hydraulic conductivities shows apparently the good correlation with the results of flowmeter test. But the results from the cross-hole test show some different features. The results from the cross-hole test are highly related to the connectivity and/or the binary properties of fractured media; permeable and impermeable. From the viewpoint of the connection, the application of the general stochastic approach with a single continuum model may not be appropriate even in the moderately or highly permeable fractured medium. Then, further studies on the investigation method and the analysis procedures should be required for the reasonable and practical design of the conceptual model, with which the binary properties, including permeable/impermeable features, can be described.
