Eco-car Manufacturing Activities as Engineering Design Education Subject in Suzuka National College of Technology

  • "The engineering education program for environmental intention and value creation" has been executed from 2008 to 2010 in Suzuka National College of Technology, which program was promoted as "Good Practice for Education" by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Japan. "Eco-car project" is one of these practical ecology/environment education programs. The project's members have been learning and researching the environmental managements by the process of design, manufacturing, and assembly of solar car, highly effective fuel consumption car (Eco-run car), electric vehicle and fuel-cell car. Also this project was supported by some professional experts of the local industries and community. The students learned the actual industrial technique, the engineering management and the structure of local industries by this project. In this paper, the environmental intention engineering design education with local industry collaboration is introduced.

융복합 Capstone Design 활동이 공학설계 역량에 미치는 효과 분석 (An Analysis of the Effect of Convergence Capstone Design Activity on Engineering Design Competency)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the educational effects of convergence Capstone Design activities. To this end, it analyzed the difference in engineering design competency before and after completing the curriculum in the Capstone Design process, where students from various majors team up, and analyzed the impact of convergence Capstone Design activities on engineering design competency. A survey study was conducted on experimental participants to collect data on individual characteristics and engineering design competency, and to analyze differences by background variable. As a result of analysis according to background variables, the engineering design competency was improved afterwards than before, except for some competency areas.

  • This paper deals with the introduction of capstone design projects based on invention education in Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Korea Maritime University. This course is referred to as Creative Engineering Design for spring semester of 4th-year undergraduates. The course focuses on creative thinking and cooperative mind to students by learning engineering design skills, realizing their idea through design project and recognizing practicality of their systems. To improve creative thinking of students, intellectual property (IP) education is very helpful. If engineering students take training program in IP, it will be very beneficial for CEOs to manage intellectual capital in many industries and to ensure competition power in their business. This study suggested that students take interest in connecting their ideas with inventions through invention education reinforcing an invention and a patent exercise. It is expected that this study may help to develop new curriculum of capstone design project including IP education in many universities.

공과대학생의 창의공학설계능력 교육요구도 분석 (An Analysis on Educational Needs of Creative Engineering Design Ability of Engineering Students)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and implement engineering education program by drawing out the educational needs creative engineering design ability. The importance and current level of creative engineering ability were surveyed and analyzed by using 29 sub - factors of creative engineering design ability presented by Kim Dae young et al(2006). from 234 engineering students in 6 universities. As a result, students recognized that all items of creative engineering design ability were important, and their level was generally recognized. The educational needs for creative ability and creative problem solving ability was high and the educational needs for creative engineering design project was relatively low. Based on these results, it is necessary to develop an educational program to enhance creative engineering design ability by considering learner's perception and professional and industrial recognition.

  • 공학교육인증제도 아래 기초설계-요소설계-종합설계의 3단계의 교육체계로 시행되고 있는 공학설계교육 중, 기초설계에 서는 설계 개념, 절차의 공학 입문자에의 소개와 동시에 종합설계에 연결하여 효과적으로 사용되도록 수학적인 상세 설계보다는 창의성이 발휘된 설계안을 창안, 평가하는데 중점을 두고 이를 팀 활동을 통해 연습시킨다. 본 연구에서는 기초설계를 수강하고 종합설계를 수행하고 있는 기계 분야 학생들의 의견을 설문을 통해 수집하여 효과적인 기초설계 교육이 이루어지고 있는지 알아보았다. 전반적으로 학생들이 기초설계 교육의 중요성을 높게 인식하며 유용도도 높다고 인식하고 있으며, 교과 내용별 중요도 및 유용도, 교육기반 및 환경, 종합설계와의 연계 필요성 등 기타 평가사항들이 앞서 있었던 기계 분야 교수들에 대한 설문 결과와도 상당히 일치하고 있다. 학생들과 교수들의 인식이 잘 공감되고 있으며 실제 종합설계시 팀 활동과 아이디어 창안 등이 잘 활용되고 있는 것으로 미루어 기초설계 교육이 효과적으로 이루어지고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 다만, 유용도가 중요도에 비해 약간 낮게 인식되는 점은 실습 과제를 흥미롭고 현실적인 것으로의 지속적 향상, 종합설계 초기에 기초설계 습득 내용이 응용되도록 유도하는 등의 유용도를 더 높이기 위한 방안과 노력이 필요하다는 것을 보여준다.

비판(-창의)적 사고의 문제 해결 과정과 기량을 활용한 창의 공학 설계 교육 (Creative Engineering Design Education Utilizing the Problem-solving Process and Skills of Critico(-Creative) Thinking)

  • ABEEK recommends convergent engineering projects to nurture creative problem-solving ability for 1st year engineering students through 'Creative Engineering Design' course. However, 1st year engineering students, who have not yet studied core subjects in engineering, have difficulties understanding and coping with the challenges posed by the engineering-related projects. For this reason, the educational objectives of this course are usually frustrating to achieve by the instructor. In this paper, by using the problem-solving process and skills of critico(-creative) thinking, we prepare guidelines for creative engineering design education that allow 1st-year students to effectively participate in engineering projects without a complete understanding of the design process which is to be studied. Also, we present a case study that applies the guidelines to an on-going creative engineering design course and discusses the outcomes by showing student-generated works. The results showed that the intuitive content and everyday expression of critico(-creative) thinking education enabled the instructor to effectively guide their students through the requirements of engineering projects without relying on advanced engineering design methods, and that the application of these guidelines also helped improve students' communication skills, including presentation. We show that the guidelines for creative engineering design education utilizing the problem-solving process and skills of critico(-creative) thinking is not only contributing to achieving the educational objectives of the creative engineering design course but can also be an educational paradigm that incorporates critico(-creative) thinking education into engineering education.

학제간 팀별 설계프로젝트 기반 산학공동 공학설계교육 (Industry Joint Engineering Education Via Interdisciplinary Team-based Product Development Project)

  • The paper addresses an issue of industry-joint engineering education paradigm with the purpose of setting a new standard for engineering education by development and support of competitive curriculum for the interdisciplinary team-based product development, a specialized and innovative engineering education program. In the department of MSDE (Mechanical and System Design Engineering), students are educated via three major courses for targeting engineering design, Creative Engineering Design (freshman), Design Process (Senior), and Creative Product Development (Junior). All these courses are based on personal tool exercises for design software and hardware and team-project group activities of the students with other team members. This paper will briefly discuss the main focuses of these courses and case studies of the teaching results targeting the development of telecommunication device.

자기 보고식 공학설계 역량 검사 도구 개발 (Development of The Self-Reported Measurement for Engineering Design Competency)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the self-reported measurement for engineering design competency. In this study, engineering design competency is defined as the overall individual ability that is necessary for an engineer for his/her successful accomplishment of engineering design. This measurement was developed through reviewing documents, defining factor and sub-factor, making an item and constructing validity verification. The self-reported measurement for engineering design competency consists of 6 factors and 40 items. 6 factors cover competency of design performance, competency of considering economic and social influence, competency of utilizing mathematical and scientific knowledge, competency of teamwork, competency of design-centered thinking and competency of collecting and using data. A 6-points Likert scale was used for each item.

  • The curriculum system and documentation for advanced general education, MSC (Mathematics, Basic Science, Computer Science), and engineering-design courses have been developed to improve the education of advanced undergraduate students in engineering and technology at Chosun University. In this paper, to obtain improved quality of engineering courses, we systemized the education of engineering and technology, which could be designed as the education satisfying students and provide awards for high-quality performance, through efficient management of education courses and establishment of basic and professional courses. In addition, by applying evaluation to the engineering courses and using the model of continuous quality improvement, we could achieve a high-quality education system for the engineering and technology courses.

  • This paper proposes practical teaching methods for efficient progress of project-based learning in engineering design education. Engineering design courses consist of three categories; introductory, individual and capstone design courses. This study concentrates on the case of individual design courses. Individual design courses act as bridges between introductory and capstone design courses and deal with applicable projects based on theoretical frameworks. In this study, practical teaching methods are applied to Artificial Intelligence curriculum as an individual design course for Juniors in Computer Engineering Major. The results on application of practical teaching methods show relatively positive in all aspects.
