The purpose of this study is to develop an engine oil quality monitoring system to warn the abnormal condition of engine oil. To do this, first of all, it is needed a personal controller development to measure the capacitance of a pre-developed engine oil deterioration detection sensor integrated with an oil filter. To measure the capacitance of engine oil in the sensor, it is used the way measuring the electric charging time in a capacitor by impressing DC volt. This method has merits on cost and signal stability. The measured capacitance is compensated by comparing with the one measured by an impedance analyzer. Also, using the dielectric constant gained by an impedance analyzer, the calculating equation of the dielectric constant of engine oil related with the currently developed sensor is decided. Then, the deterioration degree of engine oil is estimated according to the change rate of dielectric constant between green oil and used oil. Finally, using this dielectric constant information together with engine oil temperature and pressure, the currently developed engine oil quality monitoring system is to tell the abnormal state of engine oil.

Reliability should be done from the initial stage of development to secure performance and safety of system. To establish and achieve target reliability of a system, reliability should be allocated into the subsystems. In the acquisition and development of a system, frequent failures will cause a negative effect on performing mission and occurs increasing operating cost. This study reviewed and evaluated the existing reliability allocation models using operation and maintenance costs to find the correlation between reliability allocation models and its operating cost. A target system reliability on the diesel engine to be developed for naval vessels is allocated into its subsystem based on the existing reliability allocation models. A selection methodology for reliability allocation models was made to minimize operating cost by using simulation based on the given operating diesel engine data for naval vessels.

The development of transportation and construction equipment has required higher engine power and lower operation cost. The sound which the engine emits often degrade the performance of the whole system which adopts that engine. Specially the marine engine requires high restriction on the noise level for the customer's comfort and safety. The noise and vibration of Diesel engine must be carefully considered in the early design step. The double antivibration system is effective to increase the efficiency of antivibration, and the acoustic enclosure for reducing the noise level. 2 DOF model was effective to estimate the antivibration performance, which allows to determine the mass of the engine bed and the specification of the engine mount. The mass distribution of the enclosure system can be considered effectively by using the FEM model. The design contains structurally rigid engine bed by FEM, which is for reducing the influence of the flexible vibration, rubber mount selection as well as the acoustic enclosure design.

Our goal was to make a cost-effective automatic fire extinguishing system for the engine compartment use of automobiles. We designed this system for the engine compartment. This system consists of 1)foam extinguisher, 2)four nozzles, 3)a pipe arrangement, and 4)an extinguishing device which is equipped with a glass bulb as detector. First and foremost, the extinguishing device was carefully designed to keep the system cost to a minimum. Second, a AFFF foam extinguisher was used because no other fire-fighting agents proved effective against fire in the engine compartment. The AFFF(Aqueous Film Forming Foam) agent which was used in the extinguisher is the 3M company's Light Water. We sought, however, to make other foams by using Halon 1301 and Halon alternatives such as HCFC Blend A, HFC-227ea. We selected these alternatives instead of air in order to raise the expansion ratio of the AFFF agent. By these means we discovered that it is possible to increase the expansion ration of the AFFF agent up to 44:1. We then demonstrated that our automatic fire extinguishing system is the most effective and lowest cost-system yet devised for passenger cars.

The development of aircraft engine requires a lot of time and cost to estimate system attributes such as performance, reliability, stability and life. A virtual engine test based on "Numerical test cell" can extremely reduce the time and cost for the development of a hardware by coupling multidisciplinary analyses. This paper presents the development activities of full engine simulation programs in U.S.A. and Europe. NASA Glenn research center of U.S.A. leads the development efforts of NPSS(Numerical Propulsion System Simulation) by assembling the existing codes and improving their functions. VIVACE (Value Improvement through a Virtual Aeronautical Collaborative Enterprise), a consortium of universities, research centers and companies in Europe is developing the PROOSIS(PRopulsion Object Oriented SImulation Software) by integrating the various programs of the institutes. The capability for the domestic development is also estimated by surveying the current status.
In the game industry, traditional game development way was to develop a game engine in advance before developing game content. This has the disadvantage is the high cost of developing the game engine. Further, there is a problem that the game content are not developed unless the game engine is prepared in advance. In order to solve these problems, the game industry has recently selected a method of purchasing a license for a commercial engine, which is a method for improving the game content development productivity, rather than concentrating on game engine development. In this paper, we describe a game object and the structure in Unity and Unreal Engine 4. We compared the editor interface and the supported development languages in the two game engines. We also implemented a First-Person Shooter game to compare how the player's configuration and event handling differ from the two game engines.

Recently, development and application of the condition monitoring and diagnostic system for improvement of durability and reliability and reduction of operating cost is generalized in the aircraft propulsion system. Especially, for reliable operation of the UAV which is flying in high altitude more than 40,000 ft for a long time an condition monitoring system to identify faults and degradations of its propulsion system should be needed. Therefore, this work proposes an on-line condition monitoring program using MATLAB/SIMULINK. In the development phase of the program, a engine signal generation module is used to simulate real engine measuring parameters instead of the real engine. The proposed on-line condition monitoring program was applied to a real turboprop engine to validate its application capability.

Compressors in Large Multi-room air conditioning system are often driven by gas heat pumps. The advantages of GHP are their high level of heating performance and low cost because they use the LNG fuel to drive engine. We developed engine control system. The developed system controls engine speed based on proportional, integral and derivative (PID) method. This controller is designed to eliminate the need for continuous operator attention on engine revolution control. The control system includes 4 spark coil drivers, fuel drivers and relay drivers to make engine's operating more stable. The experiments of control engine revolution of this system are based on the various load conditions.

On 9/5/2003, the planet probe “HAYABUSA” as MUSES-C project was launched by The Institute of Space and Astronautical Science. “HAYABUSA” has microwave discharge ion engines and these engines are characterized by their high efficiency and specific impulse in comparison with chemical engine. A large ion engine can be used as a planet explorer, while a small ion engine can be used as attitude control of small satellite. We have been developing a high thrust density microwave discharge ion engine using “Multi-Monopole Antenna”. The performance of this engine are: ion cost of 344W/A, propellant utilization efficiency of 52% and thrust density of 0.055mN/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for Kr gas flow rate of 2.5sccm, microwave(2.45㎓) power of 32W and acceleration voltage of l.4㎸.

The main propulsion system may be the most complicated of the shipboard systems. Many factors such as fuel economy, weight, space, first cost, reliability, vibration and noise must be considered when selecting the prime mover of the main propulsion system for ships. An expert system is a computer program that represents and reasons with knowledge of some specialist subject with a view to solving problems or giving advice. Recently, it is being developed increasingly with wider applications in many industries. This paper describes development of knowledge-based system for main engine selection of ships using general purpose expert system development tool, Nexpert Object. Developed system is consist of ship performance estimation module such as resistance and propulsion, data base for main engine, knowledge base for main engine selection in Nexpert Object and graphic user interface.
