Pile reinforcement systems with enlarged upper section are newly introduced by using a mechanism that most of horizontal forces are resisted in the upper part of the pile. The new systems are expected to be effectively applicable to the marine structures including port and harbor facilities. In this study, three different reinforcement methods such as bucket pile type, top base pile type, and grouting reinforcement type were utilized in the 3-D. numerical simulations. The parametric study deals with the effects of various factors including soil types and stratigraphy, reinforcement methods, type and dimension of the pile on the lateral behaviors of the pile. The results show that the reinforcement method with bucket pile is the most efficient one compared to the top base pile type and grouting reinforcement type.
In high radiation fields, gamma cameras suffer from pulse pile-up, resulting in poor energy resolution, count losses, and image distortion. To overcome this problem, various methods have been introduced to reduce the size of the aperture or pixel, reject the pile-up events, and correct the pile-up events, but these technologies have limitations in terms of mechanical design and real-time processing. The purpose of this study is to develop a real-time gamma camera to evaluate the radioactive contamination in high radiation fields. The gamma camera is composed of a pinhole collimator, NaI(Tl) scintillator, position sensitive photomultiplier (PSPMT), signal processing board, and data acquisition (DAQ). The pulse pile-up is corrected in real-time with a field programmable gate array (FPGA) using the start time correction (STC) method. The STC method corrects the amplitude of the pile-up event by correcting the time at the start point of the pile-up event. The performance of the gamma camera was evaluated using a high dose rate 137Cs source. For pulse pile-up ratios (PPRs) of 0.45 and 0.30, the energy resolution improved by 61.5 and 20.3%, respectively. In addition, the image artifacts in the 137Cs radioisotope image due to pile-up were reduced.

Driven pile has the excellent bearing characteristics and good economics, so it is known as the comparative piling method. To use the advantages of driven pile fully, it is necessary to perform the proper construction management. Engineers must drive pile to the proper bearing layer with proper blow energy and measure the blow count and penetration per certain depth to analyze the bearing capacity and driveability. In conventional method, these parameters have been measured manually so it was difficult to get good accuracy. After PIR-D(Pile Installation Recorder-Driven Pile) was attached to the driving equipment, the hammer efficiency, blow count and penetration in blow/10cm were measured automatically. In this paper, to givethe rational judgement criteria of bearing layer, driveability, blow/10cm according to pile depth during pile driving, the some relationship between the driving resistance and ground layer distribution was analyzed. The ground investigation during piles (PHC ${\Phi}450,\;{\Phi}400\;&\;Steel\;Pile\;{\Phi}609{\ast}16t$) installation in the marine clay layer in Incheon, the sandy soil layer in Yongin and the tuff layer in Pusan was done. And measuring hammer efficiency not doing recently, we could compare hammer efficiency(Eh) by PIR-D and energy transfer ratio(ETR) by Pile Dynamic Analyzer(PDA).
Precast concrete elements in accelerated bridge construction (ABC) extends from superstructure to substructure, precast pile foundation has proven a benefit for regions with fragile ecological environment and adverse geological condition. There is still a lack of knowledge of the seismic behavior and performance of the precast pile foundation. In this study, a 1/8 scaled model of precast pile foundation with elevated cap is fabricated for quasi-static test. The failure mechanism and responses of the precast pile-soil interaction system are analyzed. It is shown that damage occurs primarily in precast pile-soil interaction system and the bridge pier keeps elastic state because of its relatively large cross-section designed for railways. The vulnerable part of the precast pile with elevated cap is located at the embedded section, but no plastic hinge forms along the pile depth under cyclic loading. Hysteretic curves show no significant strength degradation but obvious stiffness degradation throughout the loading process. The energy dissipation capacity of the precast pile-soil interaction system is discussed by using index of the equivalent viscous damping ratio. It can be found that the energy dissipation capacity decreases with the increase of loading displacement due to the unyielding pile reinforcements and potential pile uplift. It is expected to promote the use of precast pile foundation in accelerated bridge construction (ABC) of railways designed in seismic regions.

This study is aimed for manufacturing a High performance Concrete(HPC) Pile as using steel fibers, investigation the mechanical properties of HPC Pile and proposition the potential application. At this study. We found that mechanical properties(cracking moment and fracture moment) of Pretensioned spun High strength Concrete (PHC) Pile using steel fibers is much superior to without steel fibers. Therefore. we think that using steel fibers in Concrete Pile is to progress flexural strength energy absorption capacity and post-cracking resistance.
This study analyzes behavior of bearing capacity of open-ended pipe pile from laboratory experiment results. Unlike the conventional pipe piles, cone penetration is implemented into the inside of the pipe pile. During the cone penetration, cone driving energy helps densification of plugged soils and soils below the pile end. Sand pluviator was used to obtain homogeneous soil layers. Two kinds of piles with different pile outer surface roughness were prepared, and two different drop heights of pile driving were applied. Eight experimental cases varying pile outer surface roughness, pile driving energy for conventional and cone penetration implemented piles were conducted. From the experiments, ultimate load of the pile increased approximately by 70% for increased pile driving height, and it increased by 21% for rougher surface pile. When cone penetration is implemented, the ultimate load increased by 40% in average.
A program for predicting rate of penetration of sheet pile using cone penetration test results was developed. Especially, energy consumption occurring from lateral vibration of sheet pile was estimated quantitatively in order to overcome overprediction of rate of penetration for shallow depths of pile installation. Penetration rates of pile calculated from developed program were compared with those of field test. Predicted rates of pile penetration for the depths to 12m were $47%{\sim}120%$ of the measured values. As pile penetration depth decreases, the difference between the predicted rate of penetration and the measured rate of penetration decreases.

An energy pile is a novel type of ground heat exchangers (GHEX's) which sets up heat exchange pipes inside a pile foundation, and allows to circulate a working fluid through the pipe for exchanging thermal energy with the surrounding ground stratum. Using existing foundation structure, the energy pile can function not only as a structural foundation but also as a GHEX. In this paper, six full-scale energy piles were constructed in a test bed with various configurations of the heat exchange pipe inside large-diameter cast-in-place piles, that is, three parallel U-type heat exchangers (5, 8 and 10 pairs), two coil type heat exchangers (with a 500 mm and 200 mm pitch), and one S-type heat exchanger. During constructing the energy piles, the constructability of each energy pile was evaluated with consideration of the installation time, the number of workers and any difficulty for installing. In order to evaluate the thermal performance of energy piles, the thermal performance tests were carried out by applying intermittent (8 hours operating-16 hours pause) artificial cooling operation to simulate a cooling load for commercial buildings. Through the thermal performance tests, the heat exchange rates of the six energy piles were evaluated in terms of the heat exchange amount normalized with the length of energy pile and/or the length of heat exchange pipe. Finally, the economic feasibility of energy pile was evaluated according to the various types of heat exchange pipe by calculating demanded expenses per 1 W/m based on the thermal performance test results along with the market value of heat exchange pipes and labor cost.

Steel pipe piles have been used as various deep foundation materials for a long time. Recent increase in steel material cost has made engineers reluctant in using it even with its good quality and ease of construction. Therefore when constructing with steel pipe pile, the decision to reuse the excessive pile length that is cut off from the designed pile head elevation after pile driving can be cost saving. This has caused many constructors to reuse the pile leftovers with new piles, but the absence of quantitative structural capacity behaviors of steel pipe pile after pile driving or appropriate countermeasures and standards in reusing steel pipe pile has resulted in wrong applications, pile structural integrity problems, inappropriate limitation of reusable pile length, etc. The structural performance analysis between a new pile and a pile that has undergone working state and ultimate state stress level during pile driving was performed in this research by means of comparing the results between the dynamic pile load test, tensile load test, charpy energy test and fatigue test for high strength steel of $440N/mm^2$ yield strength. Test results show that under working load conditions the yield strength variation is less than 2% and for ultimate load conditions the variation is less than 5% for maximum total blow count of 3000. The results have been statistically analyzed to check the sensitivity of each factors involved. From the test results, reusability of steel pipe pile lies not in the main pipe yield strength deviation but in the reduction of absorb energy, strength changes and quality control at the welded section, shape deformation and local buckling during pile driving.
