A cloud computing system can be characterized by the provision of resources in the form of services to third parties on a leased, usage-based basis, as well as the private infrastructures maintained and utilized by individual organizations. To attain the desired reliability and energy efficiency in a cloud data center, trade-offs need to be carried out between system performance and power consumption. Resolving these conflicting goals is often the major challenge encountered in the design of optimization strategies for cloud data centers. The work presented in this paper is directed towards the development of an Energy-efficient and Performance-aware Cloud System equipped with strategies for dynamic switching of optimization approach. Moreover, a platform is also provided for the deployment of a Wind Farm CMS (Condition Monitoring System) which allows ubiquitous access. Due to the geographically-dispersed nature of wind farms, the CMS can take advantage of the cloud's highly scalable architecture in order to keep a reliable and efficient operation capable of handling multiple simultaneous users and huge amount of monitoring data. Using the proposed cloud architecture, a Wind Farm CMS is deployed in a virtual platform to monitor and evaluate the aging conditions of the turbine's major components in concurrent, yet isolated working environments.
In this paper, we present a distributed algorithm for detecting dynamic event regions in wireless sensor network with the consideration on energy saving. Our model is that the sensing field is monitored by a large number of randomly distributed sensors with low-power battery and limited functionality, and that the event region is dynamic with motion or changing the shape. At any time that the event happens, we need some sensors awake to detect it and to wake up its k-hop neighbors to detect further events. Scheduling for the network to save the total power-cost or to maximize the monitoring time has been studied extensively. Our scheme is that some predetermined sensors, called critical sensors are awake all the time and when the event is detected by a critical sensor the sensor broadcasts to the neighbors to check their sensing area. Then the neighbors check their area and decide whether they wake up or remain in sleeping mode with certain criteria. Our algorithm uses only 2 bit of information in communication between sensors, thus the total communication cost is low, and the speed of detecting all event region is high. We adapt two kinds of measure for the wake-up decision. With suitable threshold values, our algorithm can be applied for many applications and for the trade-off between energy saving and the efficiency of event detection.
The virtual power plant (VPP) is a new technology to achieve flexibility as well as controllability, like traditional centralized power plants, by integrating and operating different types of distributed energy resources (DER) with the information communication technology (ICT). Though small-sized DERs may not be controlled in a centralized manner, these are more likely to be utilized as power plants for centralized dispatch and participate in the energy trade given that these are integrated into a unified generation profile and certain technical properties such as dispatch schedules, ramp rates, voltage control, and reserves are explicitly implemented. Unfortunately, the VPP has been in a conceptual stage thus far and its common definition has not yet been established. Such a lack of obvious guidelines for VPP may lead to a further challenge of coming up with the business model and reinforcing the investment and technical support for VPP. In this context, this paper would aim to identify the definition of VPP as a critical factor in smart grid and, at the same time, discuss the details required for VPP to actively take part in the electricity market under the smart grid paradigm.
This study focuses on a pillar in which is implanted a P-type maneuver under a P base. This structure is called a super junction structure. By inserting the pillar, the electric field concentrated on the P base is shared by the pillar, so the columns can be dispersed while maintaining a high breakdown voltage. Ten pillars were generated during the multi epitaxial process. The interval between pillars is varied to optimize the electric field to be concentrated on the pillar at a threshold voltage of 6 V, a yield voltage of 4,500 V, and an on-state voltage drop of 3.8 V. The density of the filler gradually decreased when the interval was extended by implanting a filler with the same density. The results confirmed that the size of the depletion layer between the filler and the N-epitaxy layer was reduced, and the current flowing along the N-epitaxy layer was increased. As the interval between the fillers decreased, the cost of the epitaxial process also decreased. However, it is possible to confirm the trade-off relationship that deteriorated the electrical characteristics and efficiency.
Ion exchange membranes have been developed from laboratory tools to industrial products with significant technical and trade impacts in the last 70 years. Today, ion exchange membranes are successfully applied for water and energy for different electro-membrane processes. Hydrogen could be produced by electrochemical water splitting using renewable energy, for example, solar, biomass, geothermal and wind energy. This review briefly summarizes the recent studies reporting the state-of-the-art anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis, especially focusing on the enhancement of the durability of anion-exchange membranes. Anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis could be used as inexpensive non-noble metal electrocatalysts that are capable of producing low cost of hydrogen. However, the main challenge of anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis is to increase the performance and durability. In this mini review, the limiting factors of the durability and the technology enhancing the durability will be discussed for anion exchange membrane water electrolysis.

Older or damaged structures can require significant retrofit to ensure they perform well in subsequent earthquakes. Supplemental damping devices are used to achieve this goal, but increase base shear forces, foundation demand, and cost. Displacement reduction without increasing base shear is possible using novel semi-active and recently-created passive devices, which offer energy dissipation in selected quadrants of the force-displacement response. Combining these devices with large, strictly passive energy dissipation devices can offer greater, yet customized response reductions. Supplemental damping to reduce response without increasing base shear enables a net-zero base shear approach. This study evaluates this concept using two incremental dynamic analyses (IDAs) to show displacement reductions up to 40% without increasing base shear, more than would be achieved for either device alone, significantly reducing the risk of response exceeding the unaltered structural case. IDA results lead to direct calculation of reductions in risk and annualized economic cost for adding these devices using this net-zero concept, thus quantifying the trade-off. The overall device assessment and risk analysis method presented provides a generalizable proof-of-concept approach, and provides a framework for assessing the impact and economic cost-benefit of using modern supplemental energy dissipation devices.
Massive offshore wind projects of have recently been driven in full gear on the Western Offshore of Korea including the 2.5 GW West-Southern Offshore Wind Project of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the 5 GW Offshore Wind Project of the Jeollanamdo Provincial Government. On this timely occasion, this study performed a general wind resource assessment on the Western Offshore by using the MERRA reanalysis data of temporal-spatial resolution and accuracy greatly improved comparing to conventional reanalysis data. It is hard to consider that wind resources on the Western Sea are excellent, since analysis results indicated the average wind speed of 6.29 ± 0.39 m/s at 50 m above sea level, and average wind power density of 307 ± 53 W/m2. Therefore, it is considered that activities shall be performed for guarantee economic profits from factor other than wind resources when developing an offshore wind project on the Western Offshore.
To obtain site-specific values of the Derived Concentration Guideline Levels (DCGLs) for decommissioning of KRR-1&2, the soil density and distribution coefficient values for Cs-137, a major contaminant radionuclide, were determined. The soil density was evaluated according to the test method established by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (KATS). The distribution coefficient was evaluated using a batch test. The validity of using the evaluated soil density and distribution coefficient as site-specific values was assessed through radiation dose assessment reflecting these values. Average soil density value obtained was 1.738 g/cm3, which was within the typical range of normal soil density, 1.0-1.8 g/cm3. The average distribution coefficient value was 7,754 mL/g. Applying the maximum, average, and minimum values of the evaluated soil density and distribution coefficient showed similar radiation dose results, thus suggesting that it is reasonable to use the average values of each parameter as site-specific values. Findings of this study can help determine DCGLs that reflect the characteristics of the research reactor site.
