This paper establishes a compact and practical model for a water-wall system comprising supercritical once-through boilers, which can be used for automatic control or simple analysis of the entire boiler-turbine system. Input and output variables of the water-wall system are defined, and balance equations are applied using a lumped parameter method. For practical purposes, the dynamic equations are developed with respect to pressure and temperature instead of density and internal energy. A comparison with results obtained using APESS, a practical thermal power plant simulator developed by Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction, is presented with respect to steady state and transient responses.

For power constrained applications, IEEE 802.15.4 networks may be operated in beacon enabled mode with inactive period. In this paper, we propose the Virtual Arrival Mechanism (VAM) to avoid the congestion at the beginning of each contention access period (CAP). Virtual Arrival Mechanism (VAM) is a kind of traffic shaping that spread the traffics congested at the beginning of CAP into the whole CAP. By using VAM, collisions and energy consumption can be reduced. Finally, we evaluate the performance enhancement of VAM using NS-2 simulator.

In this paper, two configurations of PV array are analyzed and tested under shading condition, where two configurations are series-parallel and total-crass-tied configuration. Each photovoltaic module is emulated by two 5 inch po1y-crystalline cells in series and an array is constructed by connecting 24 of the modules to compare a generated maximum power of the two configurations. Pspice and Sun simulator. PASAN IIIb, are used for simulation and experiment to test the array under various partial shading conditions. Test results show the total-cross-tied configuration generates 7.63% higher maximum power than the series-parallel configuration, and it is well matched to the analysis and simulations of the two configurations.
Advances in wireless sensor network (WSN) technology have enabled small and low-cost sensors with the capability of sensing various types of physical and environmental conditions, data processing, and wireless communication. In the WSN, the sensor nodes have a limited transmission range and their processing and storage capabilities as well as their energy resources are limited. A triple umpiring system has already been proved for its better performance in WSNs. The clustering technique is effective in prolonging the lifetime of the WSN. In this study, we have modified the ad-hoc on demand distance vector routing by incorporating signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) based dynamic clustering. The proposed scheme, which is an efficient and secure routing protocol for wireless sensor networks through SNR-based dynamic clustering (ESRPSDC) mechanisms, can partition the nodes into clusters and select the cluster head (CH) among the nodes based on the energy, and non CH nodes join with a specific CH based on the SNR values. Error recovery has been implemented during the inter-cluster routing in order to avoid end-to-end error recovery. Security has been achieved by isolating the malicious nodes using sink-based routing pattern analysis. Extensive investigation studies using a global mobile simulator have shown that this hybrid ESRP significantly improves the energy efficiency and packet reception rate as compared with the SNR unaware routing algorithms such as the low energy aware adaptive clustering hierarchy and power efficient gathering in sensor information systems.
In wireless sensor networks (WSNs) duty cycling has been an imperative choice to reduce idle listening but it introduces sleep delay. Thus, the conventional WSN medium access control protocols are bound by the energy-latency tradeoff. To break through the tradeoff, we propose a radio wave sensor called radio frequency (RF) wakeup sensor that is dedicated to sense the presence of a RF signal. The distinctive feature of our design is that the RF wakeup sensor can provide the same sensitivity but with two orders of magnitude less energy than the underlying RF module. With RF wakeup sensor a sensor node no longer requires duty cycling. Instead, it can maintain a sleep state until its RF wakeup sensor detects a communication signal. According to our analysis, the response time of the RF wakeup sensor is much shorter than the minimum transmission time of a typical communication module. Therefore, we apply duty cycling to the RF wakeup sensor to further reduce the energy consumption without performance degradation. We evaluate the circuital characteristics of our RF wakeup sensor design by using Advanced Design System 2009 simulator. The results show that RF wakeup sensor allows a sensor node to completely turn off their communication module by performing the around-the-clock carrier sensing while it consumes only 0.07% energy of an idle communication module.

In this study, we prepared CdTe/CdS solar cells using a thermal vacuum evaporation method. In particular, $CdCl_2$ treatment was attempted using this same method at $400^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The prepared CdTe/CdS solar cells were investigated using Fouier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and a solar simulator system including light absorption properties, morphological properties, and power conversion efficiency (PCE). In addition, we investigated the gamma-irradiation treatment at dose rates of 0 Gy, 500 Gy, 1 kGy, 10 kGy, and 30 kGy. The characteristics of gamma-irradiation treatment were studied based on the same method described above. In particular, it showed increased values as 0.826% higher than the non-irradiation of 0.448% from PCE analysis.
We have developed an electromagnetic generator to bury in subcutaneous area or abdominal cavity of the birds. As we can't use a solar battery, it is extremely difficult to supply a power for subcutaneous implantation such as biosensors under the skin due to the darkness environment. We are aiming to test the antigen-antibody reaction to confirm an avian influenza. One solution is a very small generator with the electromagnetic induction coil. We attached the developed coil to chickens and pheasants and recorded the electric potential generated as the chicken walked and the pheasant flew. The electric potential generated with physical simulator is equal to or exceeds the 7 V peak-to-peak at maximum by 560/min of flapping of wings. Even if we account for the junction voltage of the diode (200 mV), efficient charging of the double-layer capacitor is possible with the voltage doubler rectifier. If we increase the voltage, other problems arise, including the high-voltage insulation of the double-layer capacitor. For this reason, we believe the power generated to be sufficient for subcutaneous area of birds. The efficiency, magnetic 2 mm in length and coil 15mm in length, if axial direction is rectified, the magnetic flux density given to the coil could calculated to 7.1 % and generated power average 0.47mW. The improvements in size and wire insulation are expected in the future.
VANET (Vehicular Ad-hoc Network) is a mobile Ad-hoc Network which deals with the moving vehicles. VANET supports Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) which is related to different modes of transport and traffic management techniques. VANETs enabled users to be informed and make them safer. VANET uses IEEE 802.11p standard wireless access protocol for communication. An important and necessary issue of VANET is to design routing protocols. In a network, communication takes place by the use of the routing protocols. There are mainly two types of communications used such as Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) in VANET. Vehicles can send and receive messages among them and also to and from infrastructure used. In this paper, AODV, DSR and DSDV are compared by analysing the results of simulation on various metrics such as average throughput, instant throughput, packet delivery ratio and residual energy. Findings indicates utilization of AODV and DSR is more applicable for these metrics as compared to DSDV. A network simulator (NS2) is used for simulation.
Jet impinging device is designed for decay heat removal on horizontal fuel rods in a low temperature heating reactor. An experimental system with a fuel rod simulator is established and experiments are performed to evaluate water film covering capacity, within 0.0287-0.0444 kg/ms mass flow rate, 0-164.1 kW/m2 heating flux and 13.8-91.4℃ feeding water temperature. An effective method to obtain the film coverage rate by infrared equipment is proposed. Water film flowing patterns are recoded and the film coverage rates at different circumference angles are measured. It is found the film coverage rate decreases with heating flux during single-phase convection, while increases after onset of nucleate boiling. Besides, film coverage rate is found affected by Marangoni effect and film accelerating effect, and surface wetting is significantly facilitated by bubble behavior. Based on the observed phenomenon and physical mechanism, dry-out depth and initial dry-out rate are proposed to evaluate film covering potential on a heating surface. A model to predict film coverage rate is proposed based on the data. The findings would have reliable guide and important implications for further evaluation and design of decay heat removal system of new reactors, and could be helpful for passive containment cooling research.
To test the effectiveness of using an energy storage system for frequency regulation, the Energy New Business Laboratory at KEPCO Research Institute installed a 4 MW energy storage system (ESS) demonstration facility at the Jocheon Substation on Jeju Island. And after the successful completion of demonstration operations, a total of 52 MW ESS for frequency regulation was installed in Seo-Anseong (28 MW, governor-free control) and in Shin-Yongin (24 MW, automatic generation control). The control system used in these two sites was based on the control system developed for the 4 MW ESS demonstration facility. KEPCO recently finished the construction of 184 MW ESS for frequency regulation in 8 locations, (e.g. Shin-Gimjae substation, Shin-Gaeryong substation, etc.) and they are currently being tested for automatic operation. KEPCO plans to construct additional ESS facilities (up to a total of about 500 MW for frequency regulation by 2017), thus, various operational tests would first have to be conducted. The high-speed characteristic of ESS can negatively impact the power system in case the 500 MW ESS is not properly operated. At this stage we need to verify how effectively the 500 MW ESS can regulate frequency. In this paper, the effect of using ESS for frequency regulation on the power system of Korea was studied. Simulations were conducted to determine the effect of using a 524 MW ESS for frequency regulation. Models of the power grid and the ESS were developed to verify the performance of the operation system and its control system. When a high capacity power plant is tripped, a 24 MW ESS supplies power automatically and 4 units of 125MW ESS supply power manually. This study only focuses on transient state analysis. It was verified that 500 MW ESS can regulate system frequency faster and more effectively than conventional power plants. Also, it was verified that time-delayed high speed operations of multiple ESS facilities do not negatively impact power system operations. It is recommended that further testing be conducted for a fleet of multiple ESSs with different capacities distributed over multiple substations (e.g. 16, 24, 28, and 48 MW ESS distributed across 20 substations) because each ESS measures frequency individually. The operation of one ESS facility will differ from the other ESSs within the fleet, and may negatively impact the performance of the others. The following are also recommended: (a) studies wherein all ESSs should be operated in automatic mode; (b) studies on the improvement of individual ESS control; and (c) studies on the reapportionment of all ESS energies within the fleet.
