  • The Geumganasa Temple site two Ridege-end tiles at the Buyeo National Museum(The Buyeo2150-1 and 2150-2, hereinafter referred to as 2150-1 and 2150-2) were excavated the Geumgangsa Temple site. They provide important materials for investigating the shapes and production techniques of the ridge-end tiles of the time since their lower portions remain relatively intact. This study is intended to examine whether the two ridge-end tiles were identical. Conservation treatment, including removal of foreign substances, was conducted in preparation for observation with the naked eye to compare the formal features and production techniques of the two examples. The study revealed that these ridge-end tiles shared formal features such as surface color, clay composition, shape, size, and decoration; however, they differed in terms of production technique. The 2150-1 tile was made by assembling a separately-made body and wing and has no hole through the back, while the 2150-2 tile had its body and wing made as a single unit using long clay plates and features circular holes in the back. It was revealed that one portion of the body of both tiles was intentionally tilted during the production process.

  • Noise performance of small wind turbines is critical since these are generally installed near the community. In this study, flow noise characteristics of Savonius wind turbines are numerically investigated. Flow field around the turbine are computed by solving unsteady RANS equation using CFD techniques and the radiated noise are predicted by applying acoustic analogy to the computed flow data. Parametric study is then carried out to investigate the effects of operating conditions and geometric design factors of the Savonius wind turbine. Tonal noise components with higher harmonic frequency than the BPF are identified in the predicted noise spectra from a Savonius wind turbine. The end-plates and helical blades are shown to reduce overall noise levels. These results can be used to design low-noise Savonius wind turbines.

  • This paper attempts to predict the stress concentration around the corner of rectangular inserts of different material of mechanical properties from the base material of the finite rectangular plate. The problem is analyzed through the FEM and photo-elastic experiment with the inclination angle of the insert as variable parameters. According to the experiments and the numerical analysis, the maximum stress concentration occurs at the point of tangential discontinuity of a insert. When the lain insert or opening was so inclined that the distance from the free end of the plate to a corner became minimum, the maximum stress concentration factor was found.

  • A post-tensioned reinforced concrete slab bridge is analyzed by specially orthotropic laminate theory. Symmetrically reinforced slab with tension and compression steel is considered for convenience of analysis. Each longitudinal and transverse steel layer is regarded as a lamina, and material constants of each lamina is calculated by the use of the rule of mixture. This bridge is under uniformly distributed vertical loads, and axial loads and end moments due to post-tensioning. In this paper, finite difference method is used for numerical analysis of this bridge. Theory and analysis method of specially orthotropic laminate plates used in this paper can be used for design of new bridges, and maintenance and repair of old bridges.

  • Photocatalytic degradation of chlorpyrifos and diazinon, which are extensively used as an organophosphorous pesticide in the agriculture field, has been investigated with UV-radiated TiO$_2$ in aqueous phase. Photodegradation rate was increased with increasing pH of the solution. The removal efficiencies of chlorpyrifos and diazinon were 100% after 200 min in pH 9. Photodegradation followed a pseudo-first-order reaction. The rate constants of chlorpyrifos and diazinon were 0.0160min$\^$-1/ and 0.0180min$\^$-1/, respectively. NO$_3$$\^$-/, PO$_4$$\^$3-/, SO$_4$$\^$2-/ and Cl$\^$-/ were found as end products on the photocatalytic degradation of chlorpyrifos and diazinon with TiO$_2$/UV.

  • An analytical solution has been developed for the impact response of delaminated composite plates. The analysis is based on an expansion of loads, displacements, and rotations in a Fourier series which satisfies the end boundary conditions of simply-supported. The analytical formulation adopts the Laplace transformation technique, requiring a linearization of contact deformation. In this paper, the nonlinear contact stiffness is replaced by a linearized stiffness, to provide an estimate of the additional compliance due to contact area deformation effects. It has been shown that defects such as delaminations may be modeled as spring stiffness. The change in the impact characteristics as this spring stiffness has been investigated theoretically. Predicted impact responses using analytical solution are compared with the numerical ones from the 3-D non-linear finite element model. From the results, it is shown that analytical solution was found to be reliable for predicting the impact response.

  • This paper is concerned with the development of the vibration isolation system using piezoelectric actuators and sensors. The active vibration absorber system consists of 4 pairs of PZT actuators bonded on aluminum plates. Hence, the active system is directly connected to the passive system. The rubber attached to the end of the beam is connected to the upper base as a structural member. It allows bending thus maximizing the vertical movement generated by the piezoceramic actuators. The piezoceramic sensors consists of 4 PZT sensors known to tilting, rolling and vertical movement. This paper also presents the development and the movement of the system.

  • A gripper mechanical design using a pneumatic system was developed to successfully grip, hold, and release a seedling plug for transplanting it. The gripper comprised of two air cylinders and shovel-type fingers. The gripper can grasp and hold a seedling by sliding the two fingers attached to the two separate air-cylinders, mounted at an angle of 15$^{\circ}$ When releasing a plug, retraction of the fingers gives a seedling little attachment to the gripper. To prevent seedling from attaching to the fingers, press-plates were attached to the end of the gipper. Transplanting performance of the developed gripper was tested with cucumber seedlings at different soil moisture contents. Overall transplanting performance of developed gipper was higher than the performance of the previously developed gripper. Best transplanting result was achieved at medium level of soil moisture content.

  • A single specimen of Kentrocapros flavofasciatus (measuring 145.9 mm in length) belonging to the family Aracanidae, order Tetraodontiformes, was collected for the first time in 2017 on Jeju Island, Korea. This specimen had isolated bony plates on a caudal peduncle, a carapace with six ridges, and a tail depth equal to its tail length. It is similar to K. aculeatus and K. rosapinto but differs from K. aculeatus in that its carapace is without spines; it differs from K. rosapinto in that the anterior end of its gill opening does not reach below the center of its eye. We propose new Korean names: Yug-gak-bok-gwa for the family Aracanidae, and Hwang-Jul-yug-gak-bok for the species K. flavofasciatus.

  • This paper reports the experimental results of three through bolt beam-column connections under pure shear forces using modified push-out tests. The investigated specimens include extended end-plates and six through-bolts connecting square concrete-filled steel tubular column (S-CFST) to steel beams. The main goal of this study is to investigate if and how the mechanical shear connectors, such as steel angles and stud bolts, contribute to the shear transfer mechanisms in the steel-concrete interface of the composite column. The contribution of shear studs and steel angles to improve the shear resistance of steel-concrete interface in through-bolt connections was investigated using tests. The results showed that their contribution is not significant when the beam-column connection is included in the push-out tests. The specimens failed by pure shear of the long bolts, and the ultimate load can be predicted using the shear resistance of the bolts under shear forces. The predicted values of load allowed obtaining a good agreement with the tests results.
