  • Purpose: This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effects of an empathy education program for undergraduate nursing students. Methods: The study employed a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. A total of 46 nursing students were voluntarily recruited by convenience sampling from senior nursing students from the nursing department of K college in I city, Korea. Participants were divided into two groups, an experimental group of 23 and a control group of 23. The experimental intervention (empathy education program) was conducted from April 19 to May 6, 2016 and consisted of 150-minute sessions, twice a week, for 3 weeks for a total of 15 hours. Results: Participants demonstrated improvements in perspective taking in cognitive empathy, improved empathic concern in emotional empathy, and improved communicative empathy. Analysis of reflective writings identified four theme clusters regarding communicative empathy: improvement of empathic expression, experiencing comfort and healing, improvement of interpersonal relationships, and experience of conflict resolution. Improved interpersonal ability and caring were also identified. Conclusion: The empathy education program improved cognitive, emotional and communicative empathy, and interpersonal skills and care, which are all necessary qualities for nurses.

  • Objectives : Empathy has been conceptualized as the ability of emotional resonance and perspective-taking. Emotional awareness has been proposed as the basis of empathy. In this study we examined the relationship between empathy and mood awareness and their neural correlates in resting-state activity in normal controls and patients with schizophrenia. Methods : Empathy and mood awareness scale scores were compared between 29 patients with schizophrenia and 21 normal controls by voxel-based t-tests and voxel-based correlation analyses of resting-state $^{18}F$-FDG PET images. Results : Empathy and mood labeling scale scores were significantly decreased in schizophrenic patients. Mood monitoring was positively correlated with empathy score in normal controls, but not in schizophrenic patients. In normal controls, empathy was positively correlated with resting-state activities in the intraparietal sulcus and mood monitoring was positively correlated with the temporal pole, frontopolar cortex, inferior temporal gyrus, entorhinal cortex and the subgenual prefrontal cortex resting activities. The orbitofrontal cortex resting activity was positively correlated with mood monitoring-related subgenual prefrontal cortex activity in the normal controls. Patients with schizophrenia showed decreased orbitofrontal resting activity and loss of its correlations with mood monitoring-related regional activities. Conclusion : This study showed that alteration in the resting-state activity in schizophrenia may reflect dysfunctional empathy and distorted characteristic of emotional awareness. However, the resting-state activity may not reflect the relationship between emotional awareness and empathy.

The subjects of the study were 111 people of speech and language therapists working in Daegu and Gyeongbuk. For data analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and correlation analysis were performed using the SPSS/PC 21.0 statistical program according to the purpose of the study. As a result of the study, the relationship between empathy ability and job satisfaction was found to be high, and there was a high correlation between cognitive and emotional empathy ability, which is a sub-factor of empathy ability, and job satisfaction. Therefore, follow-up research is needed to identify the empathy and job satisfaction about nationwide speech and language therapists for implementing various education programs and improving empathy skills in the future.

  • This study aimed to identify any possible correlations among the empathy ability, peer relationships, and smartphone addiction of upper-grade elementary school students; the effects of empathy ability and peer relationships on smartphone addiction; and to verify the mediating effect of the empathy ability between peer relationships and smartphone addiction. To this end, the empathy ability, peer relationship, and smartphone addiction tests were conducted among 154 six-grade elementary school students in Gyeonggi and Our findings were as follows; First, in terms of the correlations among empathy ability, peer relationships, and smartphone addiction, the empathy ability and peer relationships were shown to have a positive correlation while the empathy ability and smartphone addiction turned out to have a negative correlation, which was also the case between peer relationships and smartphone addiction. Second, when it came to the effects of the empathy ability and peer relationships on smartphone addiction, the emotional empathy as part of the empathy ability and the esteem out of peer relationships were shown to have a negative effect on smartphone addiction, indicating that an increase of emotional empathy and esteem resulted in less smart phone addiction. Third, in terms of the effect of peer relationships on smartphone addiction with the empathy ability as a medium, peer relationships and smartphone addiction were shown to be partially mediated by the empathy ability. These findings are meaningful in that they could serve as the basic data for the development of smartphone addiction prevention programs for elementary school students.

The survey was conducted 217 nursing students attending in G city from September 3th to September 14th, 2018. Data was collected from self-administered questionnaires about happiness, emotional intelligence, empathy ability and calling consciousness. Data were analyzed by SPSS software version 21 using descriptive statistics (frequency) and analytical statistics (t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, linear regression). As a result, Happiness was significantly different by gender, grade, satisfaction in major, collegiate-life satisfaction, personal relationship, health status, perceived economic status. Also happiness showed positive correlation with emotional intelligence, empathy ability, and calling consciousness. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the predictors of happiness were grade, collegiate-life satisfaction, health status, empathy ability, calling consciousness, and emotional intelligence accounting for a total of 49.1% of the variance. • While depressives tend to be preoccupied with their own grief and the negative aspects, they might lack the capacity to interact with outside world. With the intention to determine whether depressives might have certain characteristics regarding empathic behavior, as behavior is highly based on responsiveness to others, we examined the relationship between emotional empathy and depression. In addition, we examined the mediating effect of self-criticism on the relationship between emotional empathy and depression. Data was collected from 146 online university students and analyzed using the correlation and multiple regression model. Results showed that perspective taking, which is the cognitive aspect of empathy, was negatively correlated with depression. Concerning the emotional aspects of empathy, both empathic responding and empathic concern were negatively correlated with depression, while personal distress was positively correlated with depression. Regression results, which set the empathy related variables as predicting variables, found perspective taking decreased depression, and personal distress enhanced depression. In addition, personal distress showed significant enhancing effect on depression and was completely mediated by self-criticism. With the result, implications and limitations of this study were discussed.
