  • As low power, low cost wireless communication technology like Bluetooth, Zigbee, RFID has been put to practical use together with the wellbeing trend, the concern about ubiquitous health care has been greatly increased and u-Health is becoming one of the most important application in the sensor network field. Especially, development of the medical services to be able to cope with a state of emergency for solitary senior citizens and the aged in silver town is very meaningful itself and their needs are also expected to continuously increase with a rapid increase in an aging population. In this paper we demonstrate the feasibility of extracting accurate heart rate variability (HRV) measurements from photoelectric plethysmography(PPG) signals gathered by a ring type pulse oximeter sensor attached to the finger. For this, we made 2 types of ring sensor, that is reflective and pervious type, and developed the remote monitoring system which is able to collect HR data from ring sensor, analyze and cope with a state of emergency.

  • Objective: To evaluate the current status of managing adverse reactions to iodinated contrast media (ICM) for computed tomography in referral hospitals in South Korea compared with hospitals in other countries. Materials and Methods: This survey investigation involved 59 Korean and 15 overseas hospitals using guideline-based questionnaires consisting of 24 items in 7 main categories related to managing adverse reactions to ICM. Results: Informed written consent with risk factor evaluation was appropriately performed in most of the Korean hospitals. There was considerable variability in assessing renal function across the hospitals; serum creatinine level was used as a reference in 76.4% of Korean hospitals. The Korean hospitals preferred a more stringent approach to determining normal renal function (p = 0.01), withholding metformin (p = 0.01), and fasting before ICM exposure (p < 0.001) compared with overseas hospitals. All the Korean hospitals had an emergency protocol and in-hospital system for adverse reactions to ICM. The Korean (87.7%) and overseas hospitals (100%) were similarly equipped with epinephrine (p = 0.332), but only 38.6% of Korean hospitals were equipped with a bronchodilator (p = 0.004). For patients with a previous hypersensitivity reaction to ICM, 62.3% of Korean hospitals pre-medicated with anti-histamine and corticosteroid according to the severity of the previous reaction, and changed the culprit ICM in 52.8%, while skin test was performed in 17%. Conclusion: In general, Korean referral hospitals were well-prepared regarding informed consent, protocol, and an in-hospital system for managing adverse reactions to ICM. Nevertheless, there was considerable variability in details and management, thus requiring standardization by reflecting current guidelines.

  • This study was an attempt to control and monitor Computerized Numerical Controller (CNC) machines anywhere and anytime for the development of a ubiquitous machine (u-machine). With a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) phone, the machine status and machining data of CNC machines can be monitored in wired and wireless environments, including the environments of IMT2000 and Wireless LAN. Moreover, CNC machines can be controlled anywhere and anytime. The concept of the anywhere-anytime controlling and monitoring of a manufacturing system was implemented in this study for the purpose of u-manufacturing and u-machines. In this concept, the communication between the CNC controller and the PDA phone was successfully performed anywhere and anytime for the real-time monitoring and control of CNC machines. In addition, the interface between the CNC controller and the developed application module was implemented by Object linking and embedding for Process Control (OPC) and shared CNC memory. For communication, the design of a server contents module within the target CNC was based on a TCP/IP. Furthermore, the client contents module within the PDA phone was designed with the aid of embedded c++ programming for mobile communication. For the interface, the monitoring data, such as the machine status, the machine running state, the name of the Numerical Control (NC) program, the alarm and the position of the stage axes, were acquired in real time from real machines with the aid of the OPC method and by sharing the CNC memory. The control data, such as the start, hold, emergency stop, reserved start and reserved stop, were also applied to the CNC domain of the real machine. CNC machines can therefore be controlled and monitored in real time, anywhere and anytime. Moreover, prompt notification from CNC machines to mobile phones, including cellular phones and PDA phones, can be automatically realized in emergencies.

  • Blood pressure is one of the important vital signs for monitoring the medical condition of a patient. Automated NIBP(non-invasive blood pressure) monitoring devices calculate systolic and diastolic blood pressures from the oscillation in cuff pressure caused by a pulsation of an artery. To validate the NIBP devices, we developed a simulator to supply the oscillometric waveforms obtained from human subjects. The simulator provided pressure pulses to device-under-test and device readings were compared to the auscultatory references. Fully automated simulation system including OCR(optical character recognition) were developed and used for NIBP monitoring devices. The validation results using the simulator agreed well with previous clinical validation. More validation studies using the standardized oscillometric waveforms would be required for the replacement of clinical trials to validate a new automated NIBP monitoring device.

  • The automation system uses PLC to monitor the manufacturing process status of the production product and processes the sensor information transmitted from the sensor. In this paper, we propose a remote surveillance system to monitor the status of control relay used in automation system. The proposed system consists of a control relay module, a one-chip processor module, a computer monitoring system, and a database system that inputs and manages the details of the control relay. The computer monitoring system is configured to monitor the operating condition and life time of the control relay. The database is configured so that the input date of the control relay can be input and corrected, and the operating state information of the control relay can be automatically printed. In the remote monitoring system, the failure status of the control relay is recognized in real time, and the time required for normal operation can be minimized by quickly replacing faulty parts.

  • This paper introduces an efficient USN (ubiquitous sensor network) for monitoring blind areas in a skiing resort, developed as a part of u-Sport showcase project of Gangwon Province. Blind areas of a skiing resort are dangerous and/or steep areas located aroud ski slopes, which are rarely traveled and not easily seen by a ski patrol. If an accident occurs in such a blind area, the main control center of the sking resort can hardly recognize the accident and provide first aid and rescue services promptly. The blind area monitoring system proposed in this paper monitors a blind area of a skiing resort using five battery-powered sensor nodes each of which has an image sensor on it and wirelessly transmits images around the blind area to the main control center on a regular basis, therebly allowing real-time monitoring of the blind area and prompt rescue services in case of accidents. Additionally, the monitoring system provides an emergency button which skiers injured in the blind area can push. If the button is pushed, an image around the button and an alarm signal are transmitted to the main control center and therefore the main control center can take prompt actions for rescuing the injured skiers.
