  • Objectives: The objective of this study is to investigate the relation between the obesity prevalence of elementary school students and some factors such as socio-demographic factors, parent's obesity, diet habit and physical activity. Methods: The students of the fourth(443), fifth(405) and sixth grade(417) at six elementary schools in the school district of Daejeon metropolitan city were sample-surveyed and classified into a normal group, a non-intensive obesity group, and a highly intensive obesity group. Results: 1. The obesity rate of the elementary school students in the school district of Daejeon metropolitan city was total 14.2%. 2. The obesity rate of students with parents who had high BMI was notably higher than the other groups. 3. Diet factors such as eating fast, always eating one more, liking fatty food and the frequency of snacks were more critical than physical activity factors in relation to school children's obesity. Conclusions: From the above evidences, it is apparent that the obesity of elementary school students have strong relations with eating habits. It is needed that obesity prevention program such as effective meal guidance in addition to intense physical activities is included in the curriculums of health education for elementary school students.

  • In this paper, we propose a CT-SPI Model based on a physical computing for improving Computational Thinking(CT) for elementary students. This study analyzes the results obtained from applying the CT-SPI model to fourth-grade class. The model is designed to embrace the learning activities and CT elements for three different stages: System thinking, Prototyping and Interaction. For providing curriculum with CT-SPI model, physical SW educational module is developed, so that learners could focus on internalizing CT. The study results indicate that a learning satisfaction and a degree of learner interest improve significantly. Comprehensive CT capability assessment results in three levels show that the capability in lowest level (score is below 4 out of 10) has decreased by 46.6% but capability in highest level (over 7 out of 10) has increased by 20%.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of asymmetric muscle force in lower extremity on dynamic balance during walking. Sixteen elementary students(age: 12.3${\pm}$0.7 yrs, height: 149.4${\pm}$9.7 cm, weight 40.6${\pm}$7.8 kg) who have no musculoskeletal disorder were recruited as the subjects. Temporal parameters, M-L inclination angle of XCoM-CoP, M-L and A-P CoP, loading rate, and decay rate were determined for each trial. For each dependent variable, a independent-sample t-test was performed to test if significant difference existed between each conditions(p<.05). The displacement of antero-posterior COP during RTO-LHC1 in SG was siginificantly smaller than corresponding value in AG. In contrast, the displacement of medio-lateral COP during RTO-LHC1 in SG was greater than those of AG. It seems that imbalance of muscle force may result in increasing the medio-lateral stance in order to minimize the instability. We found that the asymmetric muscle force in the lower extremity may be a reason for the awkward control of impact force.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore preservice elementary teachers' perceptions on models used in science and science education. Participants were sixty-one undergraduate students who were enrolled in a science education course offered at a university of education located in a mid-sized city, Korea. Data were obtained from the participants at the beginning of the course when they provided their answers to a questionnaire about models. The analysis revealed that a large number of the preservice teachers perceived models as representative of physical realities. By contrast, a relatively small number of them viewed models as representations of ideas or things like theories or hypotheses. Lots of the participants were apt to define a model from the perspective of its functions and considered the purposes of models communication, teaching, and understanding as well as visualization, simplification, and clarification. Most of the preservice teachers believed that there could be multiple models for a single target, and all of them answered that models could be changed in science. It was therefore concluded that the preservice teachers perceived properly the multiplicity and variability of models. Nevertheless, they could not elaborate how a model is used and evaluated in the process of scientific inquiry, and just a few of them mentioned the detailed nature of models. The preservice teachers possessed teacher-centered views of using models in the science classroom, and a small number of them remarked that they were going to use models for students to develop their own models and perform scientific inquiry.
