A Study on Students' Understanding of Figures through Descriptive Assessments (서술형 평가를 통한 학생들의 도형에 대한 이해 고찰)

  • This research is a study on student's understanding fundamental concepts of mathematical curriculum, especially in geometry domain. The goal of researching is to analyze student's concepts about that domain and get the mathematical teaching methods. We developed various questions of descriptive assessment. Then we set up the term, procedure of research for the understanding student's knowledge of geometric figures. And we analyze the student's understanding extent through investigating questions of descriptive assessment. In this research, we concluded that most of students are having difficulty with defining the fundamental concepts of mathematics, especially in geometry. Almost all the students defined the fundamental conceptions of mathematics obscurely and sometimes even missed indispensable properties. And they can't distinguish between concept definition and concept image. Prior to this study, we couldn't identify this problem. Here are some suggestions. First, take time to reflect on your previous mathematics method. And then compile some well-selected questions of descriptive assessment that tell us more about student's understanding in geometric concepts.

The Different Definition-Methods in School Geometry and the Diractical Implications (학교기하의 다양한 정의 방법과 그 교수학적 의의)

  • In this article we drew out five definition-methods in school geometry. They are called synonymous method, denotative method, analytic method. And we analyzed them theoretically. On our analysis we tried to identify the level of common sense and the level of science in definition of those two levels on the definition-methods of circle. While the definition-method in elementary school could be regarded as the level of common sense, that in middle school could be considered as the level of science. Finally, we made the following didactical comments. Definitions in school mathematics might have the levels as regard to their roles. Thus, Mathematics teachers, curriculum developers, and text authors all need to recognize the subtle differences in the level of definition-methods.

Kinematical Investigation and Geometry Modeling of the Perfect Involute Bevel Gearsets (완전한 인볼류트 베벨기어쌍의 기구학적 고찰 및 형상 모형화)

  • As demands on the precision bevel gears are increased in the related industry, the exact kinematical investigations of a pair of spherical involute bevel gears are required for the computer aided design. The exact angular velocity ratio based on the characteristics of the spherical involute tooth is derived and verified from the relationship between rotational angles. Elementary kinematics of the gearsets is investigated by applying the transformation of the coordinate systems. The tooth contact lines based on logarithmic tooth-wise curve are examines in three dimentional space. Contact ratio is formulated and simulated according to the system parameters such as shaft angles, pressure angle, and spiral angles. The condition of teeth interference is dervied and the critical numbers of gear teeth are calculated. The whole surface geometry of a spiral bevel gearsets are discretized and visualized by a computer graphic tool.

An Analysis of Mobile Virtual Manipulatives Apps for the Teaching of Elementary School Mathematics (초등학교 수학의 교수를 위한 모바일 가상조작물 앱 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of virtual manipulatives apps that can be used to teach students struggling to learn mathematics. To achieve this goal, ten general characteristics of 23 virtual manipulatives apps were evaluated. The instructional, interface, and interactive design features of apps were also evaluated on five-point scale ratings of 18 items. In addition, SPSS frequency analysis and the correlation between each feature was analyzed. Frequently presented instructional contents among 23 virtual manipulatives apps were geometry, arithmetic operation, number concept and measurement. The frequently presented level of instructional contents was lower grade elementary school and kindergarten age. The frequently presented instructional type was the simulation. Regarding the design features, instructional design was rated as the highest (mean = 3.7); interactive design (mean = 3.6) and interface design (mean = 3.3) were also rated higher than neural. In addition, as the learning strategy was appropriately presented, it was evaluated that there was less screen linkage and content error.

On Effects of Large-Deflected Beam Analysis by Iterative Transfer Matrix Approach

  • A small-deflected beam can be easily solved by assuming a linear system. But a large-deflected beam can not be solved by superposition of the displacements, because the system is nonlinear. The solutions for the large-deflection problems can not be obtained directly from elementary beam theory for linearized systems since the basic assumptions are no longer valid. Specifically, elementary theory neglects the square of the first derivative in the beam curvature formula and provides no correction for the shortening of the moment-arm cause by transverse deflection. These two effects must be considered to analyze the large deflection. Through the correction of deflected geometry and internal axial force, the proposed new approach is developed from the linearized beam theory. The solutions from the proposed approach are compared with exact solutions.

A Study of Teaching Concept of Parallel Line in Elementary School Mathematics. (초등학교 수학에서 평행과 평행선 지도에 관한 고찰)

  • We teach students to explore geometric figures by its properties and establish relationships between some basic figures. The concept of parallel line play very im-portant roles in such geometry learning process. In this study, 1 investigate the con-cept of parallel line we teaching in elementary school. Students have wrong concept images for parallel line, which is the result of the elementary school mathematics text books, where only typical cases for parallel line Is presented and there is no method to find if two lines is parallel or not. Therefore, we should teach explicitly students to find if two lines is parallel or not. The depth study on it is needed to develope students' geometric thought level.

Investigation a Newly Introduced Word 'Stipulation' In Recent Elementary School Mathematics - In the Area of Geometry (제7차 초등학교 수학에 새롭게 등장한 용어 '약속'의 재음미 -기하 영역을 중심으로-)

  • In recent elementary school mathematics a word 'stipulation' newly appears. The word is used instead of definition. However, there seems to be some differences between definition and stipulation. So, in this paper we investigate those differences through the concept 'function of definition'. In school mathematics textbooks there are definitions which carry out special functions In mathematical contexts or situations. We can say that we understand those definitions, only if we also understand the functions of definitions in those contexts or situations. Functions of definition are classified as, stipulation-function, discrimination-function, analysis-function, demonstration-function, improvement-function. With these analyses we made a frame for investigating the characteristics of the definitions in recent elementary school mathematics textbooks. As a result of analysing functions of definition we found that generally speaking, stipulation-function is excessively emphasized and the other functions of definition are not explained adequately in school mathematics textbooks. So it is required that the textbook authors should be careful not to miss an opportunity for the functional understanding and the mathematics teachers should be aware of the functions of definitions. Finally, we comment that textbook author, teacher, and researcher should be careful in using the word 'stipulation' instead of definition, because, although there are various functions of definitions, students might ream only stipulation-function.

  • 수학 학습은 구체적인 사물의 조작을 통해 추상적인 개념을 습득하는 과정이다. 이 과정에서 여러 가지 학습 도구들이 사용되어지는데, 그 중에서 컴퓨터를 활용한 Logo프로그램을 도입하여, 도형 문제해결과정에서의 부정확한 도형 개념과 정의로 인한 오류를 줄여 정확한 개념과 정의를 형성하는 지도 방안을 마련하고, 실제 수업을 통하여 일반적 수학 도형 수업보다 Logo를 활용한 수학 도형 수업이 도형 문제해결과정에서 학습자가 오류를 줄이는데 효과가 있는지 알아보고자 한다.

A Study on Inductive Reasoning and Visualization of Elementary School Students in Congruence and Symmetry Lessons with Exploratory Software (탐구형 소프트웨어를 활용한 합동과 대칭 수업에서 나타나는 초등학생의 귀납적 추론과 시각화에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we tried to find out the level of inductive reasoning ability and the aspects of visualization components shown in students in the class using exploratory software for the 'congruence and symmetry' unit in the second semester of the 5th grade of elementary school. To this end, classes using GeoGebra, one of the exploratory software, were conducted for a total of 19 students in one class of fifth graders in elementary school, and the results of the students' activities were analyzed. As a result of this study, the level of inductive reasoning ability of students remained at a similar level or developed, and it was shown that students inferred new properties of shapes using various functions of software inductively. In addition, in terms of visualization, students were able to quickly and easily draw shapes that met the conditions, and unlike the paper-and-pencil environment, using the 'measurement' and 'symmetry' functions, they transformed and manipulated complex yet precisely congruent and symmetrical external representations. Based on these analysis results, implications for the use of exploratory software in the area of figures were derived.
