  • In this study a newly designed and electro-osmotic micro-mixer is proposed. This design is comprised of a channel and metal electrodes attached in the local side wall surface, To investigate the flow patterns a numerical method is employed. To obtain the flow patterns numerical computation are performed by using a commercial code, CFD-ACE. The fluid-flow solutions are then cast into studying the characteristics of stirring with aid the Mixing index. Focus is given the effect on the electro osmotic flow characteristics under the curvature variation in the microchannel with the local of the electric field

  • We conducted a numerical study of AC-electroosmotic (alternating current) effect on the fluid flow and mixing in a 3-D microchannel. The microchannel used as an efficient micro-mixer is composed of a channel and a series of pairs of electrodes attached in zigzag pattern on the bottom wall. The AC electric field is applied to the electrodes so that a steady flow current takes place around the electrodes. This current is flowing across the channel and thus contributing to the mixing of the fluid within the channel. We performed numerical simulations by using a commercial code to obtain a steady flow field. This steady flow is then used in evaluation of the mixing performance via the concept of mixing index. It was found that good combination of two kinds of electrode, which gave us a good mixing, is not simple harmonic. And when the length ratio of these two kinds of electrode is 2:1, we can get the best mixing effect.

  • This paper presents numerical and experimental works for simultaneous pumping and mixing small liquid using asymmetric microelectrode arrays, based on AC electroosmotic flows. To this end, four arrangements of electrode pairs were considered with diagonal/herringbone shapes. Numerical simulations were made of three-dimensional geometries by using the linear theory. The results indicated that the helical flow motions induced by the electrode arrays play a significant role in the mixing enhancement. The pumping performance was influenced by the slip velocity at the center region of the channel compared to that near the side walls. To validate the numerical predictions, the microfluidic devices were made through MEMS. The flow rate was obtained by using micro PIV, increasing the applied frequency. The electrolyte was potassium chloride solution. The flow patterns above electrodes were visualized to see lateral flow for mixing. The experimental results showed good agreements with the numerical predictions.

  • Electroosmotic tests were performed on saturated marine clay specimens contaminated with lead to investigate the efficiency of the electrokinetic technique for removal of heavy metals from the cohesive soils. For this purpose, testing program included variable conditions such as the concentration of lead (500, 5, 000, 50, 000mg/kg), the level of electrical current (10, 50, 100 mA), operating duration (5, 15, 30days), and the application of three dirtferent chemicals for enhancement in efficiency. The pH of inflow and outflow, electroosmotic flow and electrical conductivity during the test, and the pH and the concentration of lead across the specimen after the test are presented. Test results came to the conclusion that the electrokinetic technique was very effective to remove heavy metals such as lead from the contaminated cohesive soil. Adding ecetic acid at the cathod to dissolve the procipitates of lead hydroxide as found to be effective for the enhancement of the efficiency in remediation.

  • In this research, electrokinetic remediation test was experimented with contaminated kaoline specimen at below, above the cation-exchange capacity of the mineral. The changes of the flow in electro-osmosis with open electrodes and current were presented, and lead removal results were evaluated through the extraction test. As a result, it was showed that removal efficiency was 20-30%, 67-87% In the anode As lead transport continues, the lead precipitation within a narrow zone very close to the cathode can go significantly high. This high lead precipitation near the cathode could block the flow path, decrease the conductivity, and thus the electroosmotic flow. The net effect will cause a decrease in the efficiency of electrokinetic processing. Therefore, in this study, citric acid and surfactant solution was used at the cathode as enhancement techniques.

  • Electroosmotic flux during iontophoresis originates due to the net negative charge of the current passing channel (pores) in skin at physiological pH (pH 7.4). Thus, the channel is permselective to cations, and this causes the convective solvent flow, from anode to cathode direction. This solvent flow facilitates the flux of cations (from anode), inhibits that of anions (from cathode), and enables the enhanced transport of neutral, polar solutes. In this work, we have investigated the effect of a series of polyethylene glycols (PEGs) with different molecular weights on the electroosmtic flow to get more detail understanding of this phenomena. • Feasibility of electrokinetic process combined with Fenton-like reaction was investigated for the removal of phenanthrene from contaminated soil. Transport of hydrogen peroxide by electroosmosis and decomposition of phenanthrene by Fenton-like reaction were observed in a model system. Electrical potential gradient and electroosmotic flow (EOF) at 10 mA were higher than those at 5 mA. High accumulated EOF resulted in high removal efficiency of phenanthrene because the large amount of hydrogen peroxide was transfered through the soil. Removal efficiency of phenanthrene by water washing was 8.5% for 7 days. The highest removal efficiency including phenanthrene decomposition was 95.6% for 14 days. After the operation, soil samples with removal efficiency of 95.6% showed low concentrations of phenanthrene and its intermediates. From this result, it was presumed that phenanthrene was decomposed to small molecules or mineralized to water and carbon dioxide due to continuous supply of hydrogen peroxide by electroosmotic flow.

  • Three different surfactants, APG, Brij30, and SDS, were tested to study the characteristics of sorption on soil surfaces, washing ability, biodegradability, and electrokinetic removal. Kaolinite and phenanthrene were selected as a model soil and a representative HOC, respectively. Phenanthrene was sorbed on kaolinite up to 2,200 mg/kg dry soil. The APG, Brij30, and SDS were sorbed on soil to 40, 7, and 4g/kg soil, respectively. The washing ability of phenanthrene was in order of Brij30>SDS>APG. The biodegradability tested with sludge was in order of APG>Brij30>SDS. In the electrokinetic test, the highest removal efficiency was obtained with APG that exhibited the highest electroosmotic flow. To increase the removal efficiency of HOC in the electrokinetic remediation, the most important factor was the selection of surfactant which maximized the electroosmotic flow.

  • Two types of electro-osmotic pumps were prepared: with anodized and DRIE porous silicon. The pump performance was characterized for both types in terms of flow rate and flow rate per current using organic solvents. Both types of electro-osmotic pumps showed a better performance compared to porous glass electro-osmotic pumps. The DRIE porous silicon electro-osmotic pump especially demonstrated an excellent flow rate and flow rate per current performance. The DRIE porous silicon electro-osmotic pump is expected to help in the development of electro-osmotic pumps and micropumps in general due to the recently widespread availability of DRIE processes.

  • Removal of phenanthrene by electrokinetic method combined with Fenton-like process was studied in a model system. The scale of reactor was 120 cm in length, 10 cm in width, and 50 cm in height. Sand was selected as a model soil. Bentonite was filled in the space between reservoir and contaminated soil to control the flow rate of water. When constant voltage of 100 V was applied to this system, current varied from 1000 mA to 290 mA for 28 days. pH of anode and cathode reservoirs became to 2 and 13, respectively. Removal efficiency of phenanthrene was more than 60 %.
