  • Recently, semiconducting organic materials have been spotlighted as next-generation electronic materials based on their tunable electrical and optical properties, low-cost process, and flexibility. However, typical organic semiconductor materials are vulnerable to moisture and oxygen. Therefore, an encapsulation layer is essential for application of electronic devices. In this study, SiNx thin films deposited at process temperatures below 150 ℃ by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) were characterized for application as an encapsulation layer on organic devices. A single structured SiNx thin film was optimized as an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) encapsulation layer at process temperature of 80 ℃. The optimized SiNx film exhibited excellent water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of less than 5 × 10-5 g/㎡·day and transmittance of over 87.3% on the visible region with thickness of 1 ㎛. Application of the SiNx thin film on the top-emitting OLED showed that the PECVD process did not degrade the electrical properties of the device, and the OLED with SiNx exhibited improved operating lifetime

  • We has been studied the thin film encapsulation effect for organic light-emitting diodes (OLED). To evaluate the passivation properties of the passivation layer materials, we have carried out the fabrication of green light emitting diodes with ultra violet(UV) light absorbing polymer resin, $SiO_2,\;and\;SiN_x$, respectively. From the measurement results of shrinkage properties according to the exposure time to the atmosphere, we found that $SiN_x$ thin film is the best material for passivation layer. We have investigated the emission efficiency and life time of OLED device using the package structure of $OLED/SiN_x/polymer$ resin/Al/polymer resin. The emission efficiency of this OLED device was 13 lm/W and life time was about 2,000 hours, which reach 95 % of the performance for the OLED encapsulated with metal.

  • The atomic structures and electronic properties of six classical and nonclassical $H_2O$@$C_{24}$ fullerene regioisomers are systematically studied using the hybrid density functional B3LYP method and M06-2X method with empirical dispersion in conjunction with the 6-31G(d,p) basis sets. The charge transfer, frontier orbitals, dipole moment, energy gap between the HOMO and LUMO, and volume change of the $C_{24}$ cage are analyzed upon encapsulation of a $H_2O$ molecule in each $C_{24}$ regioisomer. All encapsulation processes are endothermic and the relative stabilities of six $C_{24}$ fullerene regioisomers change upon encapsulation of $H_2O$.

  • Malaysian honey is rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds, which can be a healthy alternative to refined sugar in food production. However, liquid honey's viscous and sticky nature makes it unpreferable in industrial handling. This study, an atomization system coupled with vacuum drying to produce honey powders to overcome the problem. Three types of Malaysian honey, namely Acacia, Gelam, and Tualang, were encapsulated in Ca-alginate gel beads using the atomization system. The density viscosity, and surface tension of the honey-alginate solutions were measured, and the concentration of honey and alginate influenced the physical properties of the solutions. Honey-encapsulated gel beads in the size range of 2.16-2.92 mm were produced using the atomization system with the air-liquid mass flow rate ratios of 0.22-0.31, Weber number (We) of 112-545, and Ohnersorges number (Oh) of 0.35-10.46. Gel bead diameter can be predicted using a simple mathematical model. After vacuum drying, the honey gel powder produced was in the size range of 1.50-1.79 mm. Results showed that honey gel powders with good encapsulation efficiency and high honey loading could be produced using the atomization system and vacuum drying.

  • One of the critical issues for applications of flexible organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) for flexible electronic systems is the electrical stabilities of the OTFT devices, including variation of the current on/off ratio (Ion/Ioff), leakage current, threshold voltage, and hysteresis under repetitive mechanical deformation. In particular, repetitive mechanical deformation accelerates the degradation of device performance at the ambient environment. In this work, electrical stability of the pentacene organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) employing multi-stack hybrid encapsulation layers was investigated under mechanical cyclic bending. Flexible bottom-gated pentacene-based OTFTs fabricated on flexible polyimide substrate with poly-4-vinyl phenol (PVP) dielectric as a gate dielectric were encapsulated by the plasma-deposited organic layer and atomic-layer-deposited inorganic layer. For cyclic bending experiment of flexible OTFTs, the devices were cyclically bent up to 105 times with 5mm bending radius. In the most of the devices after 105 times of bending cycles, the off-current of the OTFT with no encapsulation layers was quickly increased due to increases in the conductivity of the pentacene caused by doping effects from $O_2$ and $H_2O$ in the atmosphere, which leads to decrease in the Ion/Ioff and increase in the hysteresis. With encapsulation layers, however, the electrical stabilities of the OTFTs were improved significantly. In particular, the OTFTs with multi-stack hybrid encapsulation layer showed the best electrical stabilities up to the bending cycles of $10^5$ times compared to the devices with single organic encapsulation layer. Changes in electrical properties of cyclically bent OTFTs with encapsulation layers will be discussed in detail.

  • In this paper, the inorganic-organic thin film encapsulation layer was newly adopted to protect the organic layer from moisture and oxygen. Using the electron beam, Sputter and Spin-Coater system, the various kinds of inorganic and organic thin-films were deposited onto the Ethylene Terephthalate(PET) and their interface properties between organic and inorganic layer were investigated. In this investigation, the SiON and Polyimide(PI) layer showed the most suitable properties. Under these conditions, the WVTR(water vapour transition rate) for PET can be reduced from level of 0.57 g/$m^2$/day (bare subtrate) to $1{\times}10^{-5}$ /$m^2$/day after application of a SiON and Polyimide layer. These results indicates that the SiON/PI/SiON/PI/PET barrier coatings have high potential for flexible organic light-emitting diode(OLED) applications.

  • Thermal deformation in an electronic package due to thermal strain mismatch is investigated. The warpage and the in-plane deformation of the package after encapsulation is analyzed using the laminated plate theory. An exact solution for the thermal deformation of an electronic package with circular shape is derived. Theoretical results are presented on the effects of the layer geometries and material properties on the thermal deformation. Several applications of the exact solution to electronic packaging product development are illustrated. The applications include lead on chip package, encapsulated chip on board and chip on substrate.

  • A linear carbon chain with pure sp hybridization has been intensively studied for the application of its intrinsic electrical properties to electronic devices. Owing to the high chemical reactivity derived from its unsaturated bond, encapsulation by carbon nanotubes (CNT) is provided as a promising method to stabilize the geometry of the linear carbon chain. Although the influence of CNT on the carbon chain has extensively been studied in terms of both electronic structure and geometries, the electron transport properties has not been discussed yet. In this regard, we provide the systematic atomic-scale analyses of the properties of the linear carbon chain within CNT based on a computational approach combining density-functional theory (DFT) and matrix green function (MGF) method. Based on the DFT calculations, the influence of CNT on electronic structures of the linear carbon chain is provided as well as its electrical origin. Via MGF calculations, we also identify the electron transport properties of the carbon chain - CNT complex.
