  • In the present study, as part of the technology development (Quality of Life Technology, QoLT) to improve the socio-economic status of people with disabilities as an extension of these studies, we propose the development of the smart wheelchair system and navigation technology for stable and safe driving in various environments. For the disabled and the elderly make driving easy and convenient with manual/autonomous driving condition, we firstly develop the user-oriented smart wheelchair system with optimized sensors for environment recognition, and then we propose a navigation framework of a hierarchical structure to ensure real-time response, as well as driving stability when traveling to various environmental changes, and to enable a more efficient operation. From the result of several independent experiments, we ensure efficiency and safety of smart wheelchair and its navigation system.

  • This paper describes the improvement of driving stability and the control system for INMEL-VII which is motorized manual wheelchair to satisfy requirements of the disabled The INMEL-VI was based on high maneuverability of the omnidirection drive and safety But the results of field tests about two years showed some problems to the disabled in daily life such as driving stability, Pm switching noise, and rotation of motor without driving command on negative slope. To solve the problems due to an increased DC motor power and applied to direct connection method in INMEL- VII. It improved the driving circuits and set switching frequency to 5KHz to eliminate the switching noise caused by PWM control of DC motor, As compare with the INMEL-VI, INMEL-VII is improved in driving stability by transfer the weight center to forward. The results of field testing proved the improvement of the driving stability and software algorithm It has been estimated to have a hlgh practical use for powered walking aids to the disabled's daily life.

  • This article describes a new recognition algorithm using correlation coefficient for intelligent wheelchair to avoid collision for elderly or disabled people. The correlation coefficient can be used to represent the relationship of two different areas. The algorithm has three steps: Firstly, we extract an edge vector using the Histogram of Oriented Gradients(HOG) which includes gradient information and unique magnitude for each cell. From this result, the correlation coefficients are calculated between one cell and others. Secondly, correlation coefficients are used as the weighting factors for normalizing the HOG cell. And finally, these features are used to classify or detect variable and complicated shapes of two wheelers using Adaboost algorithm. In this paper, we propose a new feature vectors which is calculated by weighted cell unit to classify with multiple view-based shapes: frontal, rear and side views($60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$ and mixed angle). Our experimental results show that two wheeler detection system based on a proposed approach leads to a higher detection accuracy than the method using traditional features in a similar detection time.

  • An alternative human interface enabling people with severe motor disabilities to control an assistive system is presented. Since this interface relies on the biosignals originating from the contraction of muscles on the face during particular movements, even individuals with a paralyzed limb can use it with ease. For real-world application, a dedicated hardware module employing a general-purpose digital signal processor was implemented and its validity tested on an electrically powered wheelchair. Furthermore, an additional attempt to reduce error rates to a minimum for stable operation was also made based on the entropy information inherent in the signals during the classification phase. In the experiments, most of the five participating subjects could control the target system at their own will, and thus it is found that the proposed interface can be considered a potential alternative for the interaction of the severely disabled with electronic systems.

  • An electric wheelchair used to be utilized as a piece of equipment for the disabled and the elderly in the past, but the recent changes to its functions and forms have made it available across various fields and purposes. In this paper, we propose a continuous track type of electric wheelchair prototype to be used in various fields and environments and a monitoring system to control it. A frame stress design was applied to improve its stability during driving compared with the previous wheelchairs. In addition, we provide a convenience for free and easy operation of them using the App. based on android. A monitoring system based on C# was also added to control a large number of electric wheelchairs. As a result of the implementation and performance evaluation, the von Mises stress value was measured 4.401% within the normal range through five times of stress interpretations, and its accuracy of communication for system manipulation was recorded about 98.75%, which means that it has been proven to be safer than the previous wheelchairs.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of a smart home (electronic control unit, ECU) on the performance and satisfaction of activities of daily living of wheelchair users. A total of 15 wheelchair users (10 patients with spinal cord injury and 5 patients with stroke) were investigated. Smart homes were equipped with ECU technology, which consisted of automation of furniture and products. The products and facilities were integrated and controlled by a smart device or voice. Performance and satisfaction of activities of daily living were measured by the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) before and after residence in a smart home. All participants showed a higher COPM (performance score ${\geq}3$, satisfaction score ${\geq}4$) during residence in a smart home compared to residence in the current home. In addition, the COPM scores differed significantly before and after residence in a smart home. These results provide evidence of the applicability of smart homes based on high technology. However, additional studies of more smart home participants should be conducted to improve the quality of the results.

  • With an increase in the aging population and a rising social interest in health and welfare, studies to improve healthcare in the elderly are being actively conducted. This study attempted to improve the current design and manufacture of elevating electric wheelchairs to enhance user safety and convenience. Seat design based on the user's body shape, convenience while boarding or alighting, caster turning radius and, safety and stability features that prevent shaking when the user gets up or sits down were improved. A driving experiment was conducted to evaluate the operation of the indoor electric wheelchair designed and manufactured with these additional functionalities. During the test, the performance parameters evaluated were continuous driving time, turning radius, maximum lifting and lowering load, maximum lifting height, noise level, minimum distance sensing by the driving auxiliary sensor, ability to interact with server and app programs, and the duty cycle maximum error rate. The test confirmed that this improved electric wheelchair successfully met target parameters. In a future study, we will evaluate this improved electric wheelchair from a user's perspective for its usability parameters, such as satisfaction, convenience and stability.

  • This study attempted to develop a speech recognition module applied to a wheelchair for the physically handicapped. In the proposed speech recognition module, TMS320C32 was used as a main processor and Mel-Cepstrum 12 Order was applied to the pro-processor step to increase the recognition rate in a noisy environment. DTW (Dynamic Time Warping) was used and proven to be excellent output for the speaker-dependent recognition part. In order to utilize this algorithm more effectively, the reference data was compressed to 1/12 using vector quantization so as to decrease memory. In this paper, the necessary diverse technology (End-point detection, DMA processing, etc.) was managed so as to utilize the speech recognition system in real time

  • In this paper, a minimum rotation radius was designed and fabricated to overcome the threshold so that elderly or disabled people who have difficulty moving can move and transfer safely and conveniently in a narrow room. In the indoor environment, where the sedentary culture develops, this study aimed to provide convenience for passengers with fracture diseases, geriatric diseases, and other knee and waist diseases. First, links, seats, armrests, covers, motors, batteries, chargers, controllers, etc. were attached to the frame so that they could be moved and lifted indoors. The product design and structure were designed considering the user's environment and physical characteristics, and IoT functions were added. A driving experiment was performed to confirm the operating performance of the manufactured indoor moving and lifting wheelchair. The performance tests, such as continuous running time, turning radius, maximum actuator load, maximum lift height, sound pressure level, minimum sensing distance of the driving aid sensor, interworking of server and app programs, device compatibility, and duty cycle error rate, were performed. As a result of the test, the built-in wheelchair could achieve the performance test target of each item and operate successfully.
