  • Several power factor correction(PFC) circuits are presented to achieve high PF electronic ballast for both voltage-fed and current-fed electronic ballast. The proposed PFC circuits use valley-fill(VF) type DC-link stages modified from the conventional VF circuit to adopt the charge pumping method for PFC operations during the valley intervals. In voltage-fed ballast, charge pump capacitors are connected with the resonant capacitors. In current-fed type, the charge pump capacitors are connected with the additional secondary-side of the power transformer. The measured PF and THD are higher than 0.99 and 15% for all proposed PFC circuits. The lamp current CF is also acceptable in the proposed circuits. The proposed circuit is suitable for implementing cost-effective electronic ballast.

  • Two current-mode and/or voltage-mode quadrature oscillator circuits each using one fully-differential second-generation current conveyor (FDCCII), two grounded capacitors, and two (or three) grounded resistors are presented. In the proposed circuits, the current-mode quadrature signals have the advantage of high-output impedance. The oscillation conditions and oscillation frequencies are orthogonally (or independently) controllable. The current-mode and voltage-mode quadrature signals can be simultaneously obtained from the second proposed circuit. The use of only grounded capacitors and resistors makes the proposed circuits ideal for integrated circuit implementation. Simulation results are also included.

  • A new test approach based on a supply current test method is proposed for testing open faults in bipolar logic circuits. In the approach, only the open faults are detected by the supply current test method, which are difficult to be detected by functional test methods. The effectiveness of the approach is examined experimentally on open fault detection in TTL combinational circuits. The results shows that higher fault coverage can be established by applying a small number of test input vectors of the supply current test method after test vectors of functional test methods based on stuck-at models.

  • Economical consumption of energy, longer life of lamps, higher lighting comfort and new aesthetic of illumination is subject of numerous research and development works. The halogen lamps are an example of positive solution some of above mentioned problems. The electronic transformers are more frequent used for their supply. In comparison with conventional transformers they have less weight, less volume and 60% less power losses. Their advantages are particular visible, when the hybrid technique is applied. The paper presents the results of engineering research and development works carried out in Private Institute of Electronic Engineering, in R. & D. Center for Hybrid Microelectronics and Resistors and in Technical School of Communications in Krakow, in the field of the design and exploitation tests of hybrid converters 220V AC /12V DC (electronic transformers) and electronic ballasts destined for the supply of halogen lamps 20W to 150W and fluorescent lamps respectively. To perform the converters, thick film technology and surface mount technology were used. For the protection of converter electronic circuit the thick film temperature sensor and transistors were applied. Moreover the paper presents the base application circuits of elaborated converters, their technical parameters and exploitation results. The development perspectives of such domain of hybrid circuits are also discussed.

  • Radiation noise due to EMI noise generated by the driving circuits of LED lighting devices in a medical imaging room was reduced by decreasing the noise source in the driving circuits and changing the number of corrections in EMI filters. Noise attenuation and filter changes enabled driving circuits that reduced the electromagnetic waves. Such circuits were efficiently designed by using capacitors and inverters in a given space. Therefore, the malfunction of radiation devices can be minimized by using EMI-reduction filter circuits, and reliable operation of medical devices can be expected by blocking electromagnetic waves.

  • Active power decoupling circuits have emerged to eliminate the inherent second-order ripple power in a single-phase power conversion system. This study proposes a design method to determine the optimal capacitance for active power decoupling circuits to achieve high power density. Minimum capacitance is derived by analyzing ripple power in a passive power decoupling circuit, a buck-type circuit, and a capacitor-split-type circuit. Double-frequency ripple power decoupling capabilities are also analyzed in three decoupling circuits under a 3.3 kW load condition for a battery charger application. To verify the proposed design method, the performance of the three decoupling circuits with the derived minimum capacitance is compared and analyzed through the results of MATLAB -Simulink and hardware-in-the-loop simulations.
