  • The evolution of incipient soot particles has been examined by high resolution electron microscopy (HRTEM) and elemental analyzer in ethylene-air inverse diffusion flames. Laser Induced Incandescence(LII) and laser scattering methods were introduced for examining the change of soot volume fraction and morphological properties in combustion generated soot qualitatively. Soot particles, collected by thermophoretic sampling were analyzed by using HRTEM to examine the nano structure of precursor particles. HRTEM micrographs apparently reveal a transformation of condensed phase of semitransparent tar-like material into precursor particles with relatively distinct boundary and crystalline which looks like regular layer structures. During this evolution histories C/H analysis was also performed to estimate the chemical evolution of precursor particles. The changes of C/H ratio of soot particles with respect to residence time can be divided into two parts: one is a very slowly increasing regime where tar-like materials are transformed into precursor particles (inception process) the other is an increasing region with constant rate where surface growth affects the increase of C/H ratio dominantly (surface growth region). These results provide a clear picture of a transition to mature soot from precursor materials.

  • The corrosion behaviors of 316L stainless steel were investigated in simulated anodic and cathodic environments for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) by using electrochemical measurement techniques. Interfacial contact resistance(ICR) between the stainless steel and gas diffusion layer(GDL) was also measured. The possibility of 316L was evaluated as a substitute material for the graphite bipolar plate of PEMFC. The value of ICR decreased with an increase in compaction stress(20 N/$cm^2$~220 N/$cm^2$) showing the higher values than the required value in PEMFC condition. Although 316L was spontaneously passivated in simulated cathodic environment, its passive state was unstable in simulated anodic environment. Potentiostatic and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement results showed that the corrosion resistance in cathodic condition was higher and more stable than that in anodic condition. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and inductively coupled plasma(ICP) were used to analyze the surface morphology and the metal ion concentration in electrolytes.

  • In this work, one-dimensional simulation is carried out for PT-GaAs Schottky barrier diodes with finite difference method. Shockley's semiconductor governing equations: Poisson equation and current continuity equation are discertized, and linearized by Newton-Raphson method. The linear system of equation is solved by Gaussian elimination method until convergence is achieved. The boundary condition for this equation is taken from thermionic emission-diffusion theory. Simulation is done for PT-GaAs epitaxial-layer Schottky barrier diodes. The claculated results of electron and potential distribution are shown. Simulation results show exellent agreement with experiments.

  • We present a model for simulating high energy laser heating of metal for ignition of energetic materials. The model considers effect of ablation of steel plate with long laser pulses and continuous lasers of several kilowatts and the thermal response of well-characterized high explosives for ignition. Since there is enough time for the thermal wave to propagate into the target and to create a region of hot spot in the high explosives, electron thermal diffusion of ultra-short (femto- and pico-second) lasing is ignored; instead, heat diffusion of absorbed laser energy in the solid target is modeled with thermal decomposition kinetic models of high explosives. Numerically simulated pulsed-laser heating of solid target and thermal explosion of RDX, TATB, and HMX are compared to experimental results. The experimental and numerical results are in good agreement.

  • The effects of Ni on the mechanical properties of WC-Xwt.%Ni-1.5wt.%Si-1.1wt.%$B_4C$ composite (X = 21.6, 23.6, 25.6 and 27.6 wt.%) were investigated in order to replace Co with Ni as the binder metal for hard materials based on WC-Co system. Using X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy results, the microstructure, pore distribution and grain size of the composites sintered at $1,150^{\circ}C$ were examined with different fraction (X = 21.6, 23.6, 25.6 and 27.6 wt.%) of binder metal Ni. The average WC grain size of the $WC-Ni-Si-B_4C$ composites was about $1{\mu}m$. The Rockwell hardness : A (HRA) and transverse rupture strength were about 88HRA and $110kgf/mm^2$, respectively. The obtained sample was bonded with SM45C at a temperature of $1,050^{\circ}C$. The thickness and mechanical properties of the bonded area were investigated with different dwell time at a bonding temperature of $1,050^{\circ}C$.

  • To achieve the commercialization of PEM fuel cell, the durability problem must be solved. Recently, many researchers have focused on this durability problem and degradation studies about membrane and electrode have been reported. But durability characteristics of gas diffusion layer is not much reported yet. Durability of GDL is very important to maintain the performance of PEM fuel cell because the main function of GDL is a path of fuel and water and the GDL degradation causes the loss of the GDL function. In this study, the degradation of GDL, especially, the mechanical degradation process was investigated with the leaching test. The effect of water dissolution was observed through the test and the amount of GDL degradation was measured with various measurement methods such as weight measurement, static contact angle measurement, scanning electron microscope. After 2,000 hours test, the GDL showed structural damage and loss of hydrophobicity.

  • Peroxide is used frequently to provide electron acceptors to aerobes for the purpose of in situ bioremediation of contaminated soil/sediment. In this study, oxygen release rate of peroxides and factors affecting on dissolution and diffusion of oxygen into pore water were evaluated. Peroxides studied in this study were magnesium peroxide ($MgO_2$), calcium peroxide ($CaO_2$), and sodium percarbonate ($Na_2CO_3{\cdot}1.5H_2O_2$). $Na_2CO_3{\cdot}1.5H_2O_2$ showed the highest oxygen release rate per unit mass and the shortest release duration time among three peroxides. A simple first-order decay model for predicting the release rate of oxygen from peroxide into pore water was presented and used to fit the experimental data. The first order oxygen release rate constants k for $MgO_2$, $CaO_2$ and $Na_2CO_3{\cdot}1.5H_2O_2$ were 0.45 /hr, 3.22 /hr and 134 /hr, respectively. If $MgO_2$ was mixed with clay, oxygen release rate was lowered significantly mainly due to limitation of contact area and diffusion, implying that oxygen can be provided to the indigenous aerobes for the extended period of time.

  • Martensitic stainless steel STS 431 has been nitrided by active screen ion nitriding under the various temperature and time. The thickness of diffusion layer, case depth, hardness and composition phases were investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), micro-Vickers hardness tester, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and glow discharge spectroscopy (GDS). It was observed that the thickness of diffusion layer depends strongly on the treatment temperature and time. A sample, which was nitrided at $450^{\circ}C$ for 8hours, was a maximum hardness of Hv0.01 1558 and nitride layer of $70{\mu}m$. As shown in XRD patterns, $\varepsilon(Fe_{2-3}N)$ and expanded martensite (${\alpha}_N$) phases which was saturated with nitrogen solid solution were in the nitrided layer treated at $450^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Composition phases of $\varepsilon$ $(Fe_{2-3}N)$ and ${\gamma}'$ ($Fe_4N$) were observed after active screen nitriding at $450^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours.

  • Stress corrosion cracks in Alloy 600 compact tension specimens tested at $325^{\circ}C$ in a simulated primary water environment of pressurized water reactor were analyzed by analytical transmission electron microscopy and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). From a fine-probe chemical analysis, oxygen was found on the grain boundary just ahead of the crack tip, and chromium oxides were precipitated on the crack tip and the grain boundary attacked by the oxygen diffusion, leaving a Cr/Fe depletion (or Ni enrichment) zone. The oxide layer inside the crack was revealed to consist of a double (inner and outer) layer. Chromium oxides existed in the inner layer, with NiO and (Ni,Cr) spinels in the outer layer. From the nano-SIMS analysis, oxygen was detected at the locations of intergranular chromium carbides ahead of the crack tip, which means that oxygen diffused into the grain boundary and oxidized the surfaces of the chromium carbides. The intergranular chromium carbide blunted the crack tip, thereby suppressing the crack propagation.
