Self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) were grown by the atomic layer epitaxy (ALE) and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) techniques, The structure and the thermal stability of QDs have been studied by high resolution electron microscopy with in-situ heating experiment capability, The ALE and MBE QDs were found to form a hemispherical structure with side facets in the early stage of growth, Upon capping by GaAs layer, however, the apex of QDs changed to a flat one. The ALE QDs have larger size and more regular shape than those of MBE QDs. The QDs collapse due to elevated temperature was observed directly in atomic scale, In situ heating experiment within TEM revealed that the uncapped QDs remained stable up to $580^{\circ}C$, However, at temperature above $600^{\circ}C$, the QDs collapsed due to the diffusion and evaporation of In and As from the QDs, The density of the QDs decreased abruptly by this collapse and most of them disappeared at above $600^{\circ}C$.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the physico-chemical effects of a potato starch and a purified potato starch under the condition of the microwave heating. They were exposed to the microwave energy in a 950 W, 2,450 MHz oven for 30 through 120 seconds. As the microwave heating time was increased, the contents of moisture and the crude fat of the samples were remarkably decreased irrespective of the starch composition, but on the other hand the contents of crude ash was slightly decreased and the crude protein was almost unchanged. The rings of crystallinity come to gradually changed in the X-ray diffraction pattern, and then the only 1 ring, of which interplanner spacing is wide, is changed strikingly. As the microwave heating time is increased, the starch granules which observed by a scanning electron microscope were broken partially with a special form, and the granules of purified potato starch were broken faster than those of potato starch. With the same condition that the microwave heating time was increased, while the gelatinization temperature comes to fall, the swelling power and the solubility were increased. Besides these, while the gelatinization temperature of the purified potato starch was lower than that of the potato starch, both the swelling power and the solubility of the purified potato starch is higher than those of the potato starch.
The carbon nanofibers (CNFs) used in this study were synthesized with an iron catalyst and ethylene as a carbon source. A concentration of 30 wt % iron(III) acetylacetonate was dissolved in resol type phenol resin and polyurethane foam was put into the solution. The sample was calendered after being cured at $80^{\circ}C$ in air for 24 h. Stabilization and carbonization of the resol type phenol resin and reduction of the $Fe^{3+}$ were completed in a high-temperature furnace by the following steps: 1) heating to $600^{\circ}C$ at a rate of $10^{\circ}C/min$ with a mixture of $H_2/N_2$ for 4 h to reduce the $Fe^{3+}$ to Fe; 2) heating to $1000^{\circ}C$ in $N_2$ at a rate $10^{\circ}C/min$ for 30 minutes for pyrolysis; 3) synthesizing CNFs in a mixture of 20.1% ethylene and $H_2/N_2$ at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 h using a CVD process. Finally, the structural characterization of the CNFs was performed by scanning electron microscopy and a synthesis analysis was carried out using energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Specific surface area analysis of the CNFs was also performed by $N_2$-sorption.
Variation in oxidation behavior with heat treatment temperature is investigated for a Ni-Ti alloy using X-ray diffraction, DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) and Auger electron spectroscopy. And the effect of oxidation on transformation behavior and superelasticity is characterized. A cold-worked 50.6Ni-Ti alloy is oxidized at 300-$700^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr in the air atmosphere. With an increase in heating temperature, the structure of $TiO_2$ changes from amorphous (300 and $400^{\circ}C$) to anatase ($500^{\circ}C$), and to rutile ($700^{\circ}C$). Activation energy of oxidation for NiTi is measured to be 51 Kcal/mol when heating temperature is $500^{\circ}C$ or above. Since Ti reacts preferably with oxygen, Ni content increases between matrix and oxide, forming $Ni_{3}Ti$ compounds. The resultant of oxidation decreases significantly $M_s$ and $A_s$ temperature in the specimen oxidized at $900^{\circ}C$ with $B_2{\rightarrow}M$ transformation path. An extra is found on cooling between two peaks in the specimen with $B_2{\rightarrow}R{\rightarrow}M$ one which is oxidized at $900^{\circ}C$ and aged at $500^{\circ}C$. Oxidation deteriorates superelasticity due to formation of Ni-rich compound.
The stability of the geometrically thin, two-temperature hot accretion disk is studied. The general criterion for thermal instability is derived from the linear local analyses, allowing for advective cooling and dynamics in the vertical direction. Specifically, classic unsaturated Comptonization disk is analysed in detail. We find five eigen-modes: (1) Heating mode grows in thermal time scale, $(5/3)({\alpha}{\omega})^{-1}$, where alpha is the viscosity parameter and w the Keplerian frequency. (2) Cooling mode decays in time scale, $(2/5)(T_e/T_i)({\alpha}{\omega})^{-1}$, where $T_e\;and\;T_i$ are the electron and ion temperatures, respectively. (3) Lightman-Eardley viscous mode decays in time scale, $(4/3)(\Lambda/H)^2({\alpha}{\omega})^{-1}$, where $\Lambda$ is the wavelength of the perturbation and H the unperturbed disk height. (4) Two vertically oscillating modes oscillate in Keplerian time scale, $(3/8)^{1/2}\omega^{-1}$ with growth rate $\propto\;(H/\Lambda)^2$. The inclusion of dynamics in the vertical direction does not affect the thermal instability, adding only the oscillatory modes which gradually grow for short wavelength modes. Also, the advective cooling is not strong enough to suppress the growth of heating modes, at least for geometrically thin disk. Non-linear development of the perturbation is followed for simple unsaturated Compton disk: depending on the initial proton temperature perturbation, the disk can evolve to decoupled state with hot protons and cool electrons, or to one-temperature state with very cool protons and electrons.
In the present study, the oxidation behavior of $Cu_{50}Zr_{50}$ and $Cu_{46}Zr_{46}Al_8$ metallic glasses has been investigated using transmission electron microscopy with a particular attention on the oxidation behavior in the supercooled liquid state. Identification of the oxidation product after continuous heating treatment shows that in $Cu_{50}Zr_{50}$ metallic glass, $ZrO_2$ with the monoclinic structure forms on the supercooled liquid as well as on the crystallized matrix. On the contrary, in $Cu_{46}Zr_{46}Al_8$ metallic glass, $ZrO_2$ with the tetragonal structure forms on the supercooled liquid, but that with the monoclinic structure forms on the crystallized matrix. The result indicates that the $Cu_{50}Zr_{50}$ metallic glass exhibits far better oxidation resistance in the supercooled liquid state than the $Cu_{46}Zr_{46}Al_8$ metallic glass.

Calcium phosphate minerals are biologically important because of their application in the fields of orthopaedics and dentistry. Herein we have tried to synthesize calcium phosphate minerals from biowaste clam shells. A simple microwave method was used to synthesize a mixture of calcium phosphate minerals such as hydroxyapatite, tri-calcium phosphate, and monetite. The microwave induces vibration of the dipole ions in the reagent. The heating and rearrangement of ions and atoms occurs during the process. The phases obtained in the final powder were ascertained by X-ray diffraction; the morphology of each sample was checked using a scanning electron microscope. We were able to obtain a mixture of calcium phosphate minerals using the microwave method; the calcined powder showed a brick like morphology, which is different from the rod shape morphology of the hydroxyapatite obtained using the hydrothermal process.
We present a novel and simple method to enable spatially selective $ZnAl_2O_4$ nanocrystal formation on the surface of $B_2O_3$-$Al_2O_3$-ZnO-CaO-$K_2O$ glass by employing localized laser heating. Optimized precipitation of glass-ceramics containing nanocrystals doped with $Eu^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ ions was performed by controlling $CO_2$ laser power and scan speed. Micro-x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy revealed the mean size and morphology of nanocrystals, and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy showed the lateral distribution of elements in the imaged area. Laser power and scan speed controled annealing temperature for crystalization in the range of 1.4-1.8 W and 0.01-0.3 mm/s, and changed the size of nanocrystals and distribution of dopant ions. We also report more than 20 times enhanced downshift visible emission under ultraviolet excitation, and 3 times increased upconversion emission from $Eu^{3+}$ ions assisted by efficient sensitizer $Yb^{3+}$ ions in nanocrystals under 980 nm excitation. The confocal microscope revealed the depth profile of $Eu^{3+}$ ions by showing their emission intensity variation.
Thermal energy storage (TES) systems using Microencapsulated phase change material (MPCM) have been recognized as one of the most advanced energy technologies in enhancing the energy efficiency and sustainability of buildings. We examined a way to incorporate MPCMs with building materials through application for wood-based flooring. Wood-based flooring is commonly used for floor finish materials of residential buildings in Korea. However, wood-based flooring has not performed the characteristic of heat storage. This study is aimed at manufacturing high thermal efficiency wood flooring by increasing its heat storage using MPCM. As a result, this study confirmed that MPCM is dispersed well in adhesive through the scanning electron microscopy analysis. From the differential scanning calorimetry analysis, it can be confirmed that this composite has the characteristic of a thermal energy storage material. Also, we analyzed how this composition was formed by physical combination through the Fourier transform infrared analysis. Also, we confirmed the bonding strength of the material by using the universal testing machine.

We have developed a two fluid solar wind model from the Sun to 1 AU. Its basic equations are mass, momentum and energy conservations. In these equations, we include a wave mechanism of heating the corona and accelerating the wind. The two fluid model takes into account the power spectrum of Alfvenic wave fluctuation. Model computations have been made to fit observational constraints such as electron($T_e$) and proton($T_p$) temperatures and solar wind speed(V) at 1 AU. As a result, we obtained physical quantities of solar wind as follows: $T_e$ is $7.4{\times}10^5$ K and density(n) is $1.7 {\times}10^7\;cm^{-3}$ in the corona. At 1 AU $T_e$ is $2.1 {\times} 10^5$ K and n is $0.3 cm^{-3}$, and V is $511 km\;s^{-1}$. Our model well explains the heating of protons in the corona and the acceleration of the solar wind.
